“Sean?” she called. Her brother hadn’t been home when she’d arrived.
The noise stopped, but no one called back.
Mina let out a low growl and charged toward the living room. “Whoever’s there is about to get their asses… kicked?” She slid to a stop as she entered the living room.
A red-faced Linh and Sean sat on the couch. Linh’s smeared lipstick, along with their rumpled clothes, made the source of the strange noises clear.
Mina laughed and winked. “Next time, go in Sean’s room and put up a sock or something, for crying out loud.”
The pair looked down, the color on their face only deepening.
“I’m pissed, though,” Mina said.
Linh’s head shot up. “What?”
“You always made it sound like you weren’t even doing anything, and you’ve been seeing Sean underneath my little wolf nose this entire time?”
Sean sighed and shook his head. “It’s not like that. I mean, I’ve liked Linh for a while, but we’ve only been, I don’t know, seeing each other the last couple of days.”
Mina chewed her lip. “Okay, then, I’m not so pissed.”
“You’ll have to keep it a secret, though,” Linh said.
Mina rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on. Don’t insult me. Besides, between you and me, my raven sister from another mother, we have sort of a ‘mutually assured destruction by secrets’ thing going on. My lips are sealed, but be smarter next time. What would have happened if Dad walked in? You’re the one who said the flock and the clan would freak.”
Linh and Sean nodded.
Mina grinned and clapped her hands together. “I love a good secret, but no stupid Romeo and Juliet crap. Crazy plans involving fake death only sound good to fourteen-year-olds.”
They all shared a laugh.
“I’ll try to make sure my crazy plans appeal to an older crowd,” Linh said.
Mina smiled and headed toward the door. “I’ve got a sudden urge to eat. Dad probably won’t be home for a bit, but you might want to hit a room just in case.”
Some secrets might tear me apart, but some secrets give me hope for the future. I won’t let the True Breed or anyone screw with the people I care about ever again.

Author Note
Dear Reader,
Thank you for taking the time to read The Golden Claw.
Even though I had great fun writing this book, the release of a new series is always a little bit terrifying. As an author, you never know if your creative vision will resonate with the audience. This is doubly so with a familiar type of being such as a shifter. Everyone has their expectations, and playing around with those can be risky.
In writing this series, I drew on my later childhood in southwest Washington. The natural beauty of the wilderness areas of western Washington has always been something that I believed would go well with a shifter-related series.
Although Golden Oaks is a fictional location, it resembles many of the small rural towns around my hometown. Sure, they aren’t filled with werewolves (maybe), but these tight-knit communities are similar in that they are trying to adjust to a world that grows increasingly complicated with each passing year.
Mina’s coming back for many more adventures now that she’s completed her Rite of Passage, and I hope you’ll join us both.
