Day of Reckoning Page 21

by Isaiah Lee

“You know, pictures. My mother took thousands of pictures of us when I was little. Any time we did anything together, any time we went anywhere together. I had all the prints converted into digital files last year and…” She began to tear up. Karen dabbed her cheek and sighed. “These are the only memories I have of my family.”

Jason did not ask more. He knew that if she wanted to share, she would. He shook off thoughts of his own family – the fact that nobody ever contacted him back – and pressed the accelerator harder as he weaved the “borrowed” Chevrolet Tahoe in and out of the standstill traffic on I-95.

They decided to shoot for Destin, Florida – assuming that they could find gas stations and/or usable vehicles on the way south – because Karen had always wanted to visit a beach.

They figured there was no time like the present, since they had just survived an alien invasion. She was always mesmerized by the green water of the Gulf of Mexico, especially the Emerald Coast of Florida. Rumor had it that much of the area surrounding and in the city of Destin remained untouched from the alien invasion.

Jason grinned as the thoughts of warmer weather flooded his mind.

“What’re you so happy about?” Karen asked, leaning in and kissing her fiancé on the cheek.

“There shouldn’t be any danger in Destin except for maybe a jellyfish or shark.” He thought about laying back on a boat, floating around in the middle of an ocean with a fishing pole in his hand. He couldn’t help but grin wide at the prospects of trying another item he’d marked on his ever-growing bucket list.

Another item on his bucket list was to complete Hank’s survival guide. He was determined to pay tribute to his fallen friend in this manner. It seemed fitting, especially for Hank.

“I’m willing to take that risk!”
