The mage looked up from his spell and saw Quinton’s fireball. He put up an energy shield, but not fast enough. Part of Quinton’s shot got through the shield and sent the mage back.
Not sure how much damage his first shot had done, Quinton fired another shot of dragon magic at the mage.
Another human is above us.
Quinton spun and turned his head. A man had climbed on top of the dune where Rayne had her cave, he had launched himself down at Quinton. Quinton, inspired by Kiana’s previous way of dealing with the giant scorpion, used a levitation spell to stop the warrior’s attack. As the warrior hung in midair, Quinton hit him with dragon fire. The warrior screamed as the magic hit him in the chest.
Turning back to the mage, Quinton saw that he wasn’t moving. Looking towards Kiana, he saw that she was fighting against a woman. Kiana hit her in the chest with several magic daggers and the woman fell to her knees. When she did, Quinton got a better look at her face. It was Envee Oke!
Looking around to see that there were no more attackers, Quinton walked towards Envee.
She saw Quinton and stared at him.
“Envee what are you doing here?” Quinton asked.
“I… I came to save your soul from her,” Envee struggled to say.
Quinton sighed. He’d known Envee forever, and she’d always been a little off, but to see her here now, it was sad. Before he could say anything else to her, she fell forward. Walking back over to inspect the mage, Quinton saw that he wasn’t dead yet. He knelt down beside the mage.
Torun looked up at Quinton. “She really brought you back.”
Quinton nodded.
The mage laughed. “Lord Zellox is going to be pissed. I didn’t kill the girl and I let her bring you back to life. I don’t suppose we can keep this a secret?”
The mage worked for Lord Zellox? That explained why he’d attacked. “What did you do to Envee.”
Torun laughed. “Nothing. She was coming to rescue you by burning your body. If your friend hadn’t killed all my men, I never would’ve met her.”
Quinton sighed. It sounded strange, but he believed the man. “What does Lord Zellox want with us?”
“He wants you to die. You are a fly in the ointment preventing his empire from growing. Nothing more.” Torun said before coughing up blood. Suddenly he lunged up toward Quinton. He had a dagger in his hand.
Quinton blocked the dagger and slammed the mage in the head. He stood up and backed away from the mage who even while dying was proving to be dangerous.
“Had to try,” Torun said before laughing. His laughing turned into a coughing fit before he finally keeled over.
Quinton warily watched the mage waiting to see if he was trying to trick him again.
He’s dead now.
Rayne stepped out of her cave. “Is it safe to come out now?”
“Yes,” Quinton said.
Rayne looked over the carnage surrounding her cave. “Would you look at this mess.”
“Sorry to have brought this to your door,” Quinton said.
Rayne laughed. “Are you kidding. I haven’t seen this much excitement in years. And I’m a necromancer, having a few dead bodies around doesn’t bother me.”
“I still can’t believe Envee Oke tried to kill us,” Kiana said.
“It was strange,” Quinton said. “She was always a little different. But I never thought she’d do anything like this.”
Kiana started to move the body of the man who’d tried to jump on Quinton’s back.
“Don’t worry about the bodies, dear. I’ll take care of them.”
“Should we get heading back to Pailtar then?” Kiana asked.
Quinton thought about it. He had the beginning of an idea and then Apophis spoke.
We should go to Morthon instead.
Quinton agreed with the dragon. This attack was the last straw. If Lord Zellox’s men were willing to follow them everywhere to kill them, then it was time to take the fight back to Lord Zellox. “Actually, I’m going to Morthon and then to Balta.”
Kiana looked at Quinton for a moment before replying. “You intend to free the cities of Mithbea from Lord Zellox?”
Quinton nodded.
“In that case, we’re going to Morthon.”
Quinton hesitated.
She’d earned the right to decide for herself. Without her we wouldn’t be alive.
Apophis was right. Without Kiana, he’d still be a ghost. If she wanted to go, he was lucky to have her.
“OK. It’s time to start taking the fight to Lord Zellox.”
Author notes
Thank you for reading NECRO MAGE. I hope you enjoyed. Please consider leaving a review as they are the lifeblood of an indie author.
Look for Stoneblood Saga book 7 this spring.
In the meantime, check out my new series DARKTHORN ACADEMY. Think Harry Potter in Middle Earth but he has to raid dungeons to pay his school fees. This is my first time delving into the world of Gamelit (for you Litrpg readers this series is fairly light or creamy).
