But we just wanted you to know, Deathrain, Valerie, and whatever else you call yourself: while we can't forgive you, we won't try to track you down – and we will cash the check you gave us. We understand now why you did that.
We hope you can find some meaning to your life, and perhaps erase your past wrongdoing. And please, do not forget our Frankie.
Sincerely,
Jean and Bob Rosello
Deathrain reread the email several times to make sure she understood it perfectly. Then, her eyes moist, she carefully slid the phone back into her pocket.
As they'd said, it wasn't exactly forgiveness, but it was close enough – and the darkness around her now seemed only the darkness of a late night, not suffocating doom.
“I won't forget any of them,” she whispered.
She hurled the Deathrain mask into the bay. There was a plop, and the mask floated there for a moment, shining in the moonlight. Then a small wave washed over it, and it was gone.
The End!
