“We don’t know if that’s true. You can’t shoulder all of that blame.” He turned to face me. “Franco would have found a way in with or without you. You said he was working with someone on the inside. We have a pretty good idea who that is since they seem to have disappeared. Either they’re running from my family or Franco took care of them.”
“God!”
“It’s a lot to process.”
“I don’t think I ever will.”
“That’s understandable and I’m prepared to accept that you can’t be with me because of who I am and where I come from. You wouldn’t be the first woman to run away from one of us. It usually happens to Dominick and Gianni but we’ve all had a date or two who flees when they realize who we are.”
“Wait?” You still want to be with me?”
“I was angry the other day. A good friend of mine was killed in my kitchen. It wasn’t my best moment. There are going to be days where I’m still not right but there’s one thing I know for sure.” He pressed his hand to my cheek. “I want you with me when I go through all the emotions and grief. What I did last night wasn’t the best solution but at the time, it was the only way for me to express what I felt. Being with you was right for me even if I didn’t handle it well this morning.”
“It was right for me too.” I nestled my cheek into his palm. “Being with you last night was the only place I wanted to be. I wanted to help you through that dark time. I still do. If you let me, I’ll be there for you.”
“Are you saying you can be with me knowing the risks?”
“I’d risk everything to be with you.”
“I’ll always protect you.” He brushed his lips along mine. “You can’t keep secrets from me, especially those that involve my family. We can’t keep you safe if you’re hiding stuff.”
“I learned my lesson.” I kissed his lips. “The best way to protect you is to be honest. I should have realized that sooner.”
“As long as you understand now.” He tangled his fingers in my hair, kissing me harder, making me believe he had forgiven me. “We’re going to be okay.”
“As long as we’re together.”
“We have a few things to work out.” He smoothed out my hair, tucking it behind my ear. “We can do that while we’re away.”
“Where are we going?”
“I promised you a trip to Italy and Paris.” He ran his lips along my jaw, igniting a slow burn deep inside me. “I’m a man of my word.”
“You’re taking me with you?”
“I never wanted to go alone.” He pulled me to him, holding me in his arms. “I came here hoping we’d work it out. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out but there’s no doubt in my mind.”
“About?”
“We’re meant to be together. I don’t see a future if you’re not in it. I don’t want to.”
“I love you.” I held onto him, never wanting to let go. “I always will.”
“I love you too.”
“I can’t believe we’re going away.”
“I can probably promise you Paris for just the two of us, and Joey, of course, but he can be discreet.” He kissed the top of my head. “Italy will be another story. Vincenzo and Nadia are traveling with us. My parents are already there and will insist on seeing us.”
His family. Would they be as forgiving as Sal? “Are you sure I should come?”
“Yes.” He looked down at me. “Why?”
“Your brothers, your parents.” I sat up, studying his expression because I wanted to see him when he answered. “Will they ever forgive me? Because given your family dynamics, I know you can’t be with me if they don’t trust me.”
“You’re right, I can’t but that’s not going to be a problem.”
“You’re sure?”
“They know Franco manipulated you and threatened you. He used me as a scare tactic.”
When I thought about all the ways Franco could have hurt Sal, my stomach hurt. “I didn’t want anything to happen to you.”
“Nothing will. You belong to me. My family supports us.” He took my face between his hands. “Let’s put this all behind us and focus on the future. I’ll take care of you, I promise.”
“We could take care of each other.”
“Always.”
