Chapter One
Baxter Bates
I jerk awake as my phone rings. Blinking, I look at my alarm clock and see that it reads 5:30. Fuck, this better be good. Everyone knows that I am not a morning person. I slap around my nightstand blindly until I find my phone. After I successfully blind myself further with the brightness of my phone, I see that Bennett, my son, is calling and I remember that he has been working midnight shifts in the ER. He normally texts me when he gets home from work. However, it's not unusual for him to call when he has had a fucked shift or if something hilarious happened, like last week when someone came in thinking a vibrator was stuck in his ass.
"You alright bud?” I answer gruffly. There is a chuckle on the other end of the line.
“I thought you might want to know that I just sealed the deal with your future daughter in law,” he says.
“What?” I sit up so fast that my phone drops onto the bed beside me. “Wait, what? “I ask again to make sure that I heard him right.
“Ah… you're wide awake now, huh.” I swear to God I can hear the smirk in his voice. I ought to know it. It’s the same as mine.
“Shut it. Tell me more about this woman you are bringing home. When are you going to bring her?” He may be a twenty-eight-year-old man with a thriving medical practice, but he will always be my little buddy. He was always too smart for this town, but he got out early and came back with all his knowledge to help the people of Billings. I can’t tell you how hard it was to leave him all alone in Boston at twelve so that he could go to Harvard. Luckily, I was able to get a condo up there so I could spend the weekends with him, or I don't know if I would have been able to handle him being gone.
“Her name is Sarah. I am bringing her to your annual Father's Day Dinner but we are going to get there a little early so you can meet her. I can't wait for you to meet her Pops. God, my duchess is fucking amazing. It was just like how Pa always talks about Gma. Anyway, I just wanted you to know that we will be there at four so you can meet her before everyone shows up.”
“Damn son that’s great news. I can’t wait to meet her. I’ll be sure to have some of your baby pictures out,” I tell him chuckling.
“Don’t even think about it, old man. I won’t hesitate to put you in a home.”
“I’d like to see you try you little shit,” I say with a chuckle.
“No pictures, Pops, promise me,” he pleads.
“Alright, alright. You win. I’ll leave them for your engagement party.”
“Fine, fine. I just don’t want to scare her off so soon.”
“I understand,” I reply, still laughing at him.
“Alright. I just got home. I am going to get a couple of hours of sleep before we come down. Don’t tell Gma or Pa I want to surprise them. I’ll see you then. Love ya, pops,”
“Love ya too, son. See you later,” I say, hanging up the phone.
I had an amazing childhood and I wanted my son to have the same things. I used high school football as a means to get out of Park City, Montana. With a full-ride scholarship to UCLA, I used my time there to get my degree in engineering which was always my goal. Football was always just a means to get what I wanted. I was always big and fast, and being an offensive lineman was easy. When I was nineteen, just a freshman, I almost ruined it all. I was at a frat house party incredibly drunk one night and got a senior girl pregnant. I tried to do right by her, but she wanted nothing to do with me or the baby. She gave birth to Bennett, handed him over to me, and never looked back. I don’t even think she ever told her family she was ever pregnant.
With the help of my parents, I raised my son and finished college with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. When I was twenty-seven, I purchased a patent for a weapon I designed. The military contracted my company, Bates International Engineering, to design the weapon for them. When I was thirty-six, BIE became exclusive contractors for the military, meaning we don’t take on jobs for any other client. It’s been very lucrative for just about twenty years now. I don’t really have to work now, but I like it. I keep an office as well as a little shop on my property that I like to tinker around in. Since Bennett grew up too early, there’s been nothing else to fill my days. At forty-seven, I should get a new fucking hobby or something.
Even though it’s early, I call my mom. She’s always up by this time every morning. She says it has to do with growing up on a ranch. My dad always says she rises with the roosters.
“Who died?” she says instead of hello, causing me to laugh.
“Hey, Ma. Just wanted to make sure you were still coming this afternoon. Bennett has some news for us.”
“Of course, I am bringing the potato salad. I also ordered some baked goods, pastries and cakes. They are being delivered a little before five.” Ella May Bates is a strong woman. Barely five feet tall and ninety pounds soaking wet, she could still kick my ass if she wanted too. She could turn nothing into something as more often than not, we had nothing. However, there were times we had some money, so we were considered upper class white trash.
“Sounds good. I’ll be waiting for them,” I tell her.
“Se
e you later bubba. Get some sleep. You sound like shit.”
“Gee Ma, thanks.” I scuff. “I stand by what I said young man.” she says with a laugh. I can't help but chuckle with her “alright, alright. Love you ma.”
“Love you too, we’ll see you soon bub.”
As soon as we hang up, I try to go back to sleep, but it’s no use. I’m up. I make my way into the kitchen and go about grabbing the meat out of the refrigerator to marinate. I started my annual Father’s Day ten years ago, I have all of my old football buddies come over with their wives and children, coworkers from over the years. It seems like it gets bigger and bigger every year. I love it though. There is nothing like kicking back with a beer, good food and even better friends. I do have to say I am glad Ma decided to order the baked goods because while I am a pro on the grill, I can't bake worth shit. After all the meat is out, I throw on some shorts and shoes, opting for an early morning run.
While I am beyond excited for Bennett, I can’t help realizing that I’ve never been in love. I guess that’s the draw though. Old men don’t get second chances at falling in love for the first time, do they?
Chapter Two
Clementine Brown
"Oh my God, don’t freak out, Clem." My auntie Kikky says as she brings me a glass of water.
“I've never done this many desserts before. I just barely fit the whole order in my van, auntie. Now you are telling me I have to go alone to drop everything off. You know I don't like crowds. I'm meant to stay in the kitchen and make the goodies, not deliver them," I say, my voice getting higher the longer I talk.
"Tsk, tsk, ClemyClem. You have to get used to dealing with people in front of the store too. This is great practice, sugar tits. Now, go get dressed while I start taking these boxes out to the van."
"But…" I hesitate.
"No buts. You have wanted to open your own shop since I gave you your first easy bake oven when you were just nine years old. I'm not going to let your social anxiety get in the way of your dreams."
At age twenty-four, I am in the midst of starting off my baking career. I finally had enough courage to sell some of my stuff at the farmers market last year. Two days later, Aunt Kikky decided to make me a website for an online bakery. I didn't even have time to be mad because I had orders already coming in. It was kind of a snowball effect after that. The business has been booming ever since. Hopefully, I will be able to open up my own bakery by the time I am twenty-eight. If I can keep this up, I should be able to open my shop in a year, maybe two tops.
"Fine," I say just barely resisting the urge to stomp my foot in frustration.
"Wonderful dear. Hurry, hurry, you don't want to be late," she says taking the water from me and practically pushing me out of the kitchen doorway. She starts humming to herself as she walks towards the garage where we set up some fridges for extra room for my baked goods.
She has always believed in me and pushed me to pursue my dreams whatever they were. when I was ten, I wanted to be a fairy princess she would make damn sure I was the best fucking fairy Princess there ever was. So, the minute I told her I wanted to be a baker, she jumped on board never letting me give up on my dream. She is the best aunt anyone could ask for.
When I was eight my parents died in a horrible plane crash on their way to their second honeymoon. I was staying with my aunt while they went. In my parents' will, they named her my legal guardian and I have been with her ever since. She took me in without a second thought. She’s raised me as her own. I don’t remember much about my parents because of how young I was. I have a few videos of us together as a family, a few fond memories, and a memory box full of their things along with some of the things they had gotten me. Even though I might not have a lot of memories of them I will cherish the ones I do have forever.
"Move it, missy," she hollers from the garage. Shit, how did she know I hadn't moved yet? Somehow, she always knows everything I swear. I shake my head and scurry off to my bedroom. I think I would like “peopling” better if I could just do it in my pajamas and no bra but alas the real world doesn't work that way. When you wear a size eighteen and have triple D boobs you can’t get away with not wearing a bra no matter how hard you try. So, I grab a pair of leggings, my dreaded bra, and my favorite teal shirt that hangs off one of my shoulders. Once I am dressed, I grab a ponytail quickly throwing my hair into a bun. I never worry about doing my full make-up because let's be honest, I am going to sweat it off twenty minutes after it's done. So, I stick to the basics: a little eyeliner then some mascara and I call it good. After I put my hot pink chucks on, I make my way to the garage where my aunt is cursing up a storm.
“Is everything okay?” I ask when I walk through the door.
“How many cupcakes did you make for this event,” she demands, whipping imaginary sweat off her brow. I giggle and shake my head.
“Mrs. Bates ordered twenty-four espresso cupcakes with a Baileys and cream filling, topped with milk chocolate frosting; twenty red velvet cupcakes with a cream cheese frosting; twenty plain vanilla cupcakes with a vanilla bean buttercream; and thirty fudge brownie cake pops with a white chocolate coating for a Father’s day dinner at her son’s house.”
“You made me some to try, yes?” she asks, raising a brow.
“Of course, they are in the kitchen, one of each.” She gets a big grin on her face.
“You are so good to me, dearie. Now here is the last of your order. Make sure you put the address in your GPS before you leave the driveway... this time,” Aunt Kikky says with a laugh.
“Hey! That was one time,” I sass back.
“I will never let you live it down,” she cackles.
“Who gets lost five minutes from home?” she asks, coming back into the garage with one of the cupcakes.
“I do. Now, do I look okay?” She nods her head.
“Yes, you look super cute.” Taking a bite of the sugary sweetness of the cupcake she moans. “Oh man these are so good. You better get going before I decide to eat the entire order.”
“I’m outta here.” Once I am in the van and buckle up. I put on my favorite radio station and grab my sunglasses. After sliding them on, I look in the rearview mirror. “You got this Clem,” I tell myself. Here goes nothing.
After a thirty-minute drive, one wrong turn and a slight “oh shit I'm going to fall off the side of this cliff moment” while driving up the side of a mountain, I am finally pulling up a long drive towards a two-story log cabin style house that is absolutely magnificent. It looks like it has a wrap-around porch too. I can so see myself cuddled up on the porch swing with a good book and a fuzzy blanket. It would be perfect if not for the ten cars parked around the circle driveway indicating that there are already people here. “Shit... please don't be late.” I look at the clock and let out a sigh of relief I got here with two minutes to spare. I park the van then make my way to the front door where I ring the doorbell. A few seconds later it opens and I about squeal when I see it is Freddy Williams from the Billings Wildcats, only the best professional football team ever.
“How can I help you sugar?” he asks with an easy grin. I don't know how I do it, but I manage to square my shoulders and speak in a normal voice.
“Hi, I am here to deliver the cupcakes Mrs. Bates ordered for the party. Where would you like me to put them?” He straightens from his position.
“Ah that would be a question for the man of the house, he is out back. I’ll take you to him.” He opens the door for me to come in. I follow him through the house admiring how warm and homey it is.
“Oh wow,” I breathe when we come to the sliding glass door. I was right. The porch is a wrap-around, but it opens up into a big deck with a view overlooking Lake George.
“He is the big guy with the white shirt manning the grill,” Freddy says opening the sliding glass door.
“Thank you for your help.” I say, giving him a little wave.
Damn, this place would be amazing if not for all these people.

Baxter
As a father I never expected to find myself jealous of my son but watching him with his girl, I feel myself a little envious. I do have to admit that I love seeing my boy so happy, and the thought of grandbabies does brighten my mood a bit.
“Sweet baby Jesus, would you look at her,” Ryan, one of my work colleagues, says, handing me a beer and pointing his towards the back of the house. I turn to look at where he is pointing and about swallow my tongue when I lock eyes with the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. I let my eyes wander over her body. Her blond hair is piled high on her head in a bun with little strands blowing in the breeze. Her shirt is stretched tight against her huge tits but is flowy around her waist. She is wearing a pair of skin-tight leggings that make my mouth water. She bites her bottom lip and blushes prettily then starts making her way towards us.
That’s right little lamb come to the big bad wolf. I’m about to make you my world.
“Hell yeah, and she is coming over here. How do I look?” he asks, giving me a cocky grin. I instantly hate the thought of him having his eyes on her and can't keep back the territorial growl that comes out.
“Touch her and I will rip your fucking heart out.” He looks as shocked as I feel. Where the fuck did that come from? I have never had the kind of reaction to a woman before let alone one that looks like she is young enough to be my daughter. But fuck if I care. All I can think about is her thick thighs clinging to my waist as I sink my aching cock deep inside her plump little pussy.
