CHAPTER FIVE

On that day, Linde’s mother was having one of the worst experiences in her mind since she started working at the Williams. On the previous day, she had almost betrayed herself in front of Mr. Williams and she just did like it. Pia had come to console her but she felt so ashamed of herself that she decided to o home earlier than expected.

Well, she had found things running better with Mr. Mayers and Linde in control. But instead, this aggravated the situation even further. The thought of leaving her home to go and cook for another woman’s family was hard to comprehend. But then what could she do with her current family’s financial predicament? He closed her eyes and called upon the Lord to do something.

Before they retired to bed, she had called Linde and given her piece of advice. She had reiterated the need for her to be responsible considering that she was the eldest child in the family and the entire family was proud of her. “I understand mum and I promise I won’t let you down. I know how you feel about me and I am doing everything to help. I know God will soon answer our prayers,” she said looking straight at her father as if to ask for some acknowledgement. Yes, the father understood and did just what she expected.

“Our daughter is really trying and we must give her hope and support. She is doing everything to help her siblings. We should also try to talk to Acy and the rest to try and help where necessary. They are too playful and that isn’t good. They should at least help Linde with other small household task to allow her have some rest,” he intervened.

It was then that she had the chance to break the good news to her mother who until then knew nothing. “Mother, I have some good news.” The mother looked surprised. She opened her mouth as if she had not heard what Linde had just said. “What is that my daughter?” She asked rather confused. During this time, Mr. Mayer had stopped talking and was watching his worn out wife. He got the feeling that he was the cause of everything that the family was going through.

“I have really late my family down. How can explain this?” He said to himself. “Father!” Linde interrupted his thoughts. “Can you please explain to mother what happened during the day when she was away. I am so excited that I can find guts to explain.” This took him by surprise but as a man, he had to try and suppress his failures.

“Well…,” he started rather hesitantly. “Linde received a call from Andrea from Caro and Marie stores inviting her for a meeting today at 8.00pm. He did not disclose the reasons for the meeting but he mentioned something to do with having good news for her.” He stopped to let the point sink. Time was running out and Linde was becoming impatient. The father looked at her and understood. “So, it would be better for us to allow her to leave as it is getting late,” He said with a kind of finale in his tone. Linde sighed in relief. She did not even wait to hear what her mother had to say. She bid them bye and ran out of the house.
