A Cold Case in Spell Page 20

by J L Collins

I took a few steps closer to the mirror, fogging it up with my breath as I tried my best to apply mascara. In the weeks of being here, I didn’t make much time for anything other than solving the murder, learning new powers, and talking with a bird.

I stood back, staring at person looking back at me. I was still the same old me. Blue hair that needed to be re-dyed. Freckles. Big eyes and small mouth. Hips for days.

But there was more to me now. Or maybe it had been there all along, but it was accessible and within my reach now.

I shook my head and slipped my feet into my new boots. It was a crazy road that led me here. Literally, a magical road.

But the road ahead was way longer, and I had no idea what to expect. There are good people here in Charming Springs, my new friends were evidence of that. Even still, I would give anything to see Nan again. Not to mention goofy cat videos, my Spotify playlist, and obviously Oreos.

I was going to have to pull up my big girl pants and figure out a way to break through the barrier spell. I had help now, but ultimately it was still up to me.

With the Special Council still keeping tabs on me, I needed to prove that I wasn’t here on suspicious terms, and with the editor position Ash had mentioned before, it would at least be a means to make money until I was free of the place. I would have to consider that.

But I would let myself enjoy the magic while I could here. It would be a waste to have the ability to control all four of the elements and not use it.

All four of the elements. How was it that I—out of all of the way more talented witches and wizards in town—came to be the only one who could manipulate all of the elements?

Ash had mentioned something in passing before, something about looking into my bloodline. But that was a little murky, and Nan didn’t talk too much about her family. I didn’t even know my own dad, so that would be even harder to pin down. Where had the magic come from?

My notebook slipped off the pull-out couch as I bumped into the edge of it, shaking me from my thoughts. A few sheets of scrawled on paper and a simple map fluttered out.

I held my hand out over them and the map floated upward toward it. I flipped it over, folded it exactly as my science teacher had taught me in fourth grade, and sent it soaring around the camper, arcing back and whizzing by my face.

  I grinned.

  THE END.
