“What could you possibly hope to gain by this?” Gregor asked. He looked pained. Sad even. Once upon a time, Ludovic had been their brother.

“When someone knows you are more powerful than them, it’s easier to control them. By knowing of our existence, I could step in and rule them. All without violence.” He spread his arms out. “How’s that for mercy?”

Gregor roared his rage. “You’d risk us being hunted down like dogs for power?”

“Humans are not hunters,” Ludovic said calmly. “They are the hunted.”

“Fight,” Edvard said. Magic pooled inside of him. He began to levitate slowly until he hovered a few feet above Ludovic.

“I’d rather not,” Ludovic said. “My job here is done.”

“We will never bow to you,” Edvard hissed.

Ludovic shrugged and flicked his fingers. The sound of booming footsteps sounded through the stadium. “A little surprise for you,” he said.

Hundreds of humans, their stares blank, rushed toward them, pulling Gregor down. Edvard was only saved because he was floating. He sent a massive push of water out to Ludovic, barrelling him over. Edvard flew after the dragon and snatched him up by the shirt before he could take off.

He spared a glance for Gregor, but could not see him through the throng of people. Edvard laid the cold steel of his knife against Ludovic’s throat. “Call them off.”

The dragon, knowing he would probably die today, laughed.

Edvard tossed him away, into the crowd of people. Instead of lunging for him, they walked around him, like he’d parted the waters. Fear of that sorcery trickled down his back.

He had to kill Ludovic. Even if Edvard thought sacrificing one of their own was the worst kind of sacrilege. The sound of beating wings above him sent relief through him.

Daegal and Sebastian arrived, taking in the shit storm they were currently experiencing. Both of them looked worse for wear. Sebastian had two black eyes and blood streamed from his nose. Daegal’s clothing was burned in places and a suspicious lump bloomed on his forehead.

Edvard pointed. His future king and brother swooped through the crowd and gripped Ludovic, who had just gotten up and started to run. His wings ripped from his back as he struggled against Daegal’s grip.

Daegal punched him, but Ludovic wouldn’t stop struggling enough for him to get a good grip. Sebastian dove into the crowd and swept bodies away from Gregor, who fought to get out of the swarming throng of humans but was overwhelmed.

When he finally broke free, Gregor unfurled his wings and flew over to Daegal.

He hovered in front of their former brother. “You’ve been tried and sentenced to death, Ludovic. Daegal, our king, will carry out the sentence.”

With heavy hearts, they floated in a circle around Daegal and the traitor to all dragon kind. He held the struggling dragon with ease, though Ludovic wasn’t making it easy on him. Once he’d seen his true death at their hands, he didn’t seem so willing to die for his cause anymore.

Daegal took the dragon’s head in his hands, shut his eyes, and snapped Ludovic’s neck.

The dragon went limp in his hands. A silver tear slid down Daegal’s cheek as he tore the head from its body, the one true way to assure an immortal’s death.

The humans abruptly stopped and fell to the ground. Alarmed, Edvard swooped down. He touched one of their pulses and let out a sigh of relief. “Unconscious.”

Daegal motioned to the other dragons. “We need to leave before the human authorities get here. I sense Sara outside of the gates, along with the other women. We must get them and go.”

“What about everyone here?” Gregor asked.

“We leave them. I’m sure they’ll have quite a story to tell once they wake up.”

  Gregor and Edvard nodded.

A shout of alarm rang out when the first humans noticed them.

“Cloak yourself,” Daegal murmured. “And let’s go.”

They activated cloaking. The humans gasped in alarm as soon as they disappeared. “Where are they? Are those…dragons?”

“I think I got a batch of bad weed, man,” said another person.

Edvard flew out of the stadium and opened the bond so he could seek Carrie out.

Her white hair fluttered against her neck as she sat at the entrance surrounded by thousands of bewildered concert goers. “Dragons.” One of them said. “The world is nuts.”

Without announcing his presence, Edvard swooped Carrie up in his arms. A squeak of alarm escaped her until he whispered in her ear.

“You’re safe.” Those were the words he hoped to utter to her from the moment they’d landed in this new world. He never thought he’d be able to say it to her. Even now, there was more to be done. After tonight, it was inevitable they’d have to move. Humankind discovered dragons not only existed, they lived right next door. It would bring many more problems to them unless they left.

Carrie nuzzled against his invisible chest as he flew her to freedom. He inhaled the sweet scent of her and sent a prayer of thanks up to the heavens and whoever might be listening.

  Epilogue

Hope Marie Lorenson was born at approximately 3:45 a.m. eight months later to an ecstatic Carrie and Edvard. She had a head of fuzzy pale blonde hair and eyes the blue of the Baltic sea. The love they had for her was instant and all-consuming.

Carrie realized the moment Edvard swept her into his arms that night Ludovic attacked that she would do anything for him, go anywhere he asked her to, as long as she could be with him. When they’d gotten back to Sara’s house, and she opened her mouth to tell him about the pregnancy, Sebastian ruined it by telling her everyone already knew.

She resisted the urge to punch him only because he was Jillian’s husband. But right after that, Edvard had flown her home.

Carrie shivered when she remembered how tenderly Edvard made love to her. Now, as she stroked her newborn daughter’s hair, her heart swelled with love for the dragon. Her mate and new husband sat beside her, staring in awe at their little girl.

“I thought-” he swallowed hard. “I always thought I’d have a son. I’m afraid I’m not sure how to teach a little girl.”

Carrie gripped his hand. “Anything you would have taught to a son, you can teach to her. She looks like a little brawler, doesn’t she?”

“Carrie!” Edvard whispered, horrified. “She’s a lady. Ladies do not brawl. Or at least my daughter doesn’t.”

“Oh, brother,” Gregor laughed. “I’m afraid there will be a time when you might eat those words.”

Their friends were all crowded around the small hospital room. When the nursing staff saw them, their eyes went wide and they all went back to their business. None of them were wearing weapons or leathers today, but everyone could tell there was something…off about the four of them.

The battle with Ludovic ended with them all packing up and moving to Maui. Ella had been the most angry about it because according to her, she’d “just gotten that godforsaken bookshelf completely put together and now you assholes want me to take it down?”

However, their lives now depended on it. Gregor had gone back to the site of both attacks and ruined all the cameras and the recording equipment with a well-placed flood. So far, there hadn’t been a peep from the police. They were just now starting to believe their troubles might be over.

Daegal found them all a massive place with multiple properties set high in the mountains. It was more than enough for them all to move in and raise gobs of children. When he and Sara first approached them all with his proposition, they balked. They’d all moved to give Daegal and Sara their privacy.

It was Sara who calmed their worries by professing she was pregnant again and desperately needed help. Plus, she admitted she missed everyone being together. The women had a good cry over it and they all agreed they would take property on the land he bought. At first, Carrie was resistant to leaving because she’d spent so much time planning out her house and getting it ready, but Edvard wa
s the most important thing to her. Wherever he went was where her home would be.

It was working out wonderfully. Keanu had access to all his uncles anytime he wanted. The dragons all had access to their brothers, and the women all had access to their fondue pots and Daegal’s wine cellar which was stocked to the brim.

Carrie leaned over and brushed her lips against Edvard’s. “I love you,” she whispered.

“And I you, mate. Until time grinds my bones into dust, I am yours.” Edvard bowed his head and gently brushed a kiss across Hope’s forehead.

The other dragons and their mates quietly left the room, leaving Carrie and Edvard alone with their brand new baby daughter and the shining golden beam of their mating bond.
