Another Motherfaker: The G.D. Taylors Series Page 22

by Willow Aster

The sweet sounds of Mya with her cello and her violinist friend play the traditional wedding song, and my father leads the way. My eyes lock with Caden’s as he waits for me at the end of the aisle. Gus is standing beside him now, as he begged and pleaded to officiate the wedding. Because of course Gus Taylor has been ordained on the internet to perform weddings.

We didn’t want a wedding party, as everyone here is important to us. They are all here because we love them and we want to share the most special moment of our lives with them.

My gaze never leaves Caden’s. He’s all I see. He’s been all I see since the first day I met him. My father kisses my cheek when we come to a stop and he shakes Caden’s hand.

“Be good to her. You’ve got a good one. The best girl around,” my father says and I hear my sister gasp, which leads to Gus barking out a laugh and Caden shooting him a warning look.

I can’t help but chuckle as my father steps away. I hand my bouquet to Penelope who is already weepy.

I glance around and see both of our families, the most important people in our lives. They all played a role in helping us get here, one way or another.

Okay, maybe not Juliette and Beecham, but they’re here and that means they must care because God knows they have a social calendar that rivals the royals.

I turn my attention to my handsome groom. The man who owns my heart. The man who saved my life in ways he can’t begin to imagine.

Gus clears his throat in the most theatrical way which makes the small audience laugh. Even my mother is smiling at this point which is saying a lot, because the woman never smiles.

“Ladies and gentlemen … and Juliette,” Gus says, and everyone covers their mouths to contain their laughter. I glance over at my sister and she’s rolling her eyes so hard I fear they might stick up in her head. “I’d like to take a moment to tell you a little about myself before I marry these two beautiful people off. My name is Gus Taylor. I’m Caden’s brother and I’m fairly certain I would have been Cosette’s second choice if this union hadn’t worked out.” He smirks and there’s more laughter, even Caden can’t help but chuckle. “Which leads me to the most important part of the ceremony. There are a few of you who I haven’t met and I’d like to make it known that I am currently single. I’m a Virgo. I like long walks on the beach. I like piña coladas and making love in the rain.”

Laughter erupts around us before Spence shouts out, “And you’re afraid of Juniper Holloway and olives. Get on with it, fool. Marry these two so we can have dinner. We’re starving.”

More laughter. My gaze locks with Caden and he smiles. My heart rate speeds up just like it always does around him.

He mouths the words, you’re beautiful, and I bite down on my bottom lip to keep from lunging into his arms.

Gus turns off the comedy routine and focuses on the reason we’re here.

“These two amazing humans fell in love right in front of our eyes. They pretended they were in love in the beginning. Then they fell madly in love. Then they tried to pretend they weren’t in love when we all knew they were.” More laughter from everyone.

“They finally admitted to themselves that they were in love, and by then we were all exhausted, and then they surprised us all and said they were getting hitched. In two weeks! Does it get any better than that? It’s the dream, right? Finding that special someone that loves you for everything you are. These two right here have the kind of love that you can’t fake. It’s the real deal, and I’m honored to witness this amazing union.”

Our wedding is the perfect mix of charming and comfortable and warm all at the same time.

  This is us.

This is the life I never knew I could have.

Gus goes through the traditional wedding rituals and we both say our vows. We’ve written our own vows that we have agreed to read to one another tonight after the wedding. Some things are meant to be private, and my deep feelings for this man that I want to spend my life with mean something to me. And they mean something to him.

“And now, for the highlight of the evening. I’d like to invite the ever dapper Louie François over to present the rings.” Gus holds his hand out to my mother, and I watch her swipe at her cheeks.

  Vivienne Dubois does not cry.

She did not shed a tear at Juliette’s wedding.

  Could she have allergies?

She meets my gaze as she sets Louie down on the ground and I realize in that moment that my mother is crying. She smiles and mouths the words, I love you, and I nearly lose it.

I’m overcome with emotion by all of it. The way my groom looks at me like I hung the moon. The way my father has come back into my life just when I needed him most. Even the way my sister shows no emotion, but I know deep down she cares because she’s here. I glance around at the Taylors and my heart is so full I think it might explode. This new family of mine has helped me find my way here. Jesse blows me a kiss, Spence winks at me, Melanie and Garrett are huddled together and she’s crying as she watches us and he keeps blinking, which tells me he’s trying his best not to fall apart. Mya, Emma, and Penelope have tears streaming down their faces and they wave at me.

Gus snaps his fingers together. “Cosi, work with me. I’m trying to make this godda--”

“GD!” Penelope shouts from the audience.

“This GD, big-toothed, well-dressed, four-legged, ring bearer, stay put to give Caden the rings.”

My head falls back in laughter and Caden leans down and takes off the little velvet bag that’s tied to his collar. Louie runs over to Gus and proceeds to jump up on two legs and wrap his body around his calf, and as if he’s making mad love to Raffi, he starts gyrating against my new brother-in-law. The laughter rings out all around us as Gus tries to shake his leg, but Louie’s not having it.

“I’m a lover, little buddy, but you’re definitely not my type.”

Caden’s laughing as he takes my hand and slides the ring on my finger.

“You’re mine forever, lover,” he whispers against my ear, and I reach for the other ring.

I slide the ring onto his finger. “And you’re mine forever.”

“I now pronounce you husband and wife. Let’s get on our feet and make some noise for the new Mr. and Mrs. Taylor,” Gus shouts, and everyone is hooting and hollering around us.

Even my mother is joining in the cheering and my dad looks at her and shakes his head at me before joining right in.

We have danced the night away. And laughed our heads off. For as proper as Maman is, she sure does love to dance. But I’ve never seen her let loose the way she does tonight.

When she starts dirty dancing with my dad, it is a shock to us all. Turns out a few drinks and a party with the Taylors is what it takes to get the girl to loosen up.

I know I’ve loosened up a lot since I let Caden into my life. My whole body feels free, my mind too … true happiness and love are the cure.

I put my arms around him and get as close as I can get, burrowing my face into his neck. I can feel his chin lift with his smile and love the sound of him laughing too.

“You’ve made me the happiest girl in the world, Caden,” I tell him. “And look, you’ve even won over my sister.”

We look over and Juliette is dancing like Elaine from Seinfeld. We both lose it again then and he kisses me mid-laugh.

“I love you with all my heart, Mrs. Cosette Taylor.”

I will never get tired of hearing him say that.

“Forever,” I whisper back. “I love you.”
