Chapter 1: I Got Your Back
“Say what now?” Alex raised his eyebrows in question. He needed to confirm what Rain had just told him because he just knew he couldn’t be hearing right. “She’s the girl that set your house on fire?”
Rain nodded. “Yeah.”
“How you know? I thought you said you didn’t see her?”
“I didn’t see her, but I heard her. I remember her voice.”
Alex turned off his truck and unlocked his seatbelt. “I already don’t like this bitch, so I’m finna go whoop her ass.”
Alex opened the door to his truck and had one foot out when Rain grabbed his arm. “NO! Don’t go, Alex. I don’t want her to see me.”
Rain’s hands were shaking and she could barely sit still in her chair. Alex really got mad then. How in the hell did this little random ass bitch think she was going to have that much control over his best friend? And for what? If anybody, it should have been him she was coming for, not Rain.
“Nah, Rain, I’ll be back.”
“Alex, please, let’s just go.”
“Fuck no, Rain. You don’t have to be scared of this bitch. Not as long as I’m right here with you.”
Alex snatched his arm away from Rain and hopped out of his truck. He kicked his flip flops off on the way over. Anybody standing close enough would be able to tell by the way he was walking that it was about to be some shit. His hair was blowing back and he was storming toward where Fallon and the girl was still standing.
It was as if they didn’t see him until it was too late. He was two feet away from them when he finally got the girl’s attention. The look on her face must have startled Fallon because she turned around and jumped. She grabbed her chest and sighed.
“Oh my God. You scared me.”
Alex disregarded her antics and looked straight at Damien’s baby mama. He pointed his finger in her face.
“I’m finna beat your ass today, bitch.”
She frowned her face up like she was confused, but that didn’t matter to Alex one bit. She would understand that ass whooping he was about to give her.
“I already don’t like your dumb ass.”
Alex wasted no more time talking after that. He swung and hit her in the mouth with his right fist. His left connected with her face following that one. It took her a minute to realize what was happening before she started trying to swing her arms. Why the fuck didn’t she drop her bags first was still in question, but that was her business, not his. Alex was going full force on her, swinging and landing blow after blow until he felt someone pulling him away.
With no thought, he swung on them too. Fallon released his arm and grabbed her eye. Alex hopped right back on the girl. This time she’d actually dropped her bags and was able to put up a fight as well. She was swinging right back. Fists being thrown, open handed slaps, hair pulling, and a few screams here and there were all amongst the fight that was going down in the middle of the parking lot.
“Damien!” Fallon’s voice could be heard, but Alex didn’t stop.
He had a hand full of the girl’s hair and was dragging her around the parking lot. Her legs were flailing as she tried to get him off of her. With every punch he landed, he got angrier and angrier. This weak ass bitch couldn’t even protect her own damn self, but thought she could run up on Rain and ruin her life? Oh hell no. Not today. Not in Alex’s world.
“You tired yet, bitch? Huh? You tired?” Alex kneed her in the face.
“Get your crazy ass off of me.”
Alex swung and caught her right in the mouth again. He jerked her head back hard enough to break her neck before slapping her hard across her face.
“Nah, you ain’t done yet, bitch.” Alex swung his knee again, hitting her in the face before he felt another pair of hands on him. These hands were a lot stronger because they were able to pull him off of the girl.
When he snatched away and noticed it was Damien, he slapped the shit out of him too. “Get your bitch.”
Damien snatched Alex’s arm so that he was facing him. Alex could tell by the look on his face that he had no clue that Alex was the one who had just been beating the dog shit out of his big ass baby mama. Hoe was too damn big not to have at least got a few licks in on him. Alex was a boy and all, but he was a small one, much smaller than most girls.
“The fuck y’all out here doing?” he yelled, looking between the three of them. “Got people out here staring at y’all ass, recording and shit. The fuck is up?”
Damien’s voice boomed. It was clear that he was angry but he let that shit go as soon as he realized the position he was in at the moment. When Alex snaked his head around to see whom Damien thought he was yelling at, he shrank back a little and softened his eyes.
Being that this altercation wasn’t about him and Damien anyway, Alex decided to let it slide and not bust him out right then, but he would get his ass later. He already knew that Damien would be over his house begging and pleading in a few hours anyway.
Alex pulled free of Damien’s grasp and looked down at his baby mama. “This ain’t over, bitch.” He looked at Fallon. “If you knew better you would stay away from this hoe.”
“Man, go ahead with that shit.” Fallon waved him off as she helped Damien’s bitch from the ground.
Alex raised his eyebrow as he smirked at her. “Oh, that’s your friend, huh?” Alex nodded. “That’s all good. Take up for her, because one thing is for sure, I’ma take up for mine every muthafucking time I feel the need to.” Alex began walking away then stopped. “Oh, but Fallon, you better make sure you take up for her ass at the right time and with the right people, because you can get the same shit she just got.” With that, he walked away, past their spectators, and got back into his truck.
He wasted no time cranking up and pulling right out of the parking lot. He rolled the windows down before looking over at Rain. She was sitting in the front seat in a daze.
“Rain, you straight?”
She nodded.
“You sure?”
“Yeah. I’m just confused as hell now. Why is she after me?”
Alex sucked his teeth. “Hell, that’s what I’m trying to see. I’m the one fucking her nigga. Shid, she should be at my damn throat, burning down my fucking house.”
When Rain sighed deeply, Alex regretted bringing that up. That wasn’t what she really needed right then. It had already taken them forever to get her out of the house this time. He was almost certain this was going to set her back once again. He shook his head because although he could understand how much pressure all of that must have been on her, he wasn’t in the mood to deal with it. He had his own demons he was battling.
Rain looked out of the window, not saying anything as he drove. Alex didn’t know where else to go, so he drove to Summer’s job. He looked at himself in the mirror and fixed his hair before tapping Rain’s shoulder.
“Come on, it’s almost twelve. She should be getting ready for lunch or something.” Alex popped the locks and he and Rain got out.
They walked quietly up the sidewalk and into the building.
After stopping by the office to get their visitors badges they proceeded to her classroom. Alex saw all of the little kids looking at him and it made him want to punch them in the face, but he just kept walking. He’d already beat enough ass for one day. He didn’t have time to put his hands on people’s kids and have to beat their parents’ ass too.
When they got to Summer’s classroom, Alex knocked on the door. Rain looked sad, but she looked like she was feeling a little better than before. You could tell she was in deep thought, but that was about it. Alex looked through the small glass when he heard the children telling Summer that somebody was at the door.
“Boy, sit your butt down and finish your work. I got it.” Summer’s voice could be heard through the door.
“This bitch talk to these people kids any kind of way.” Alex smiled at Rain.
“Don’t she though?” Rain stood from the wall and faced the door with Alex.
Summer opened her door and looked at them with her face twisted up. “What the hell y’all doing here?”
“Bitchhhhhh,” Alex shook his head and dragged his words.
Summer stepped out of class before turning back around to lean only her head in. “Y’all better be quiet while I’m out here. Whoever I hear talking gon call they mama on speakerphone for the whole class to hear after I slap you.”
The children all laughed before quieting down as she closed the door. Alex and Rain stepped back some to give her some room.
“What happened?” Summer looked at Alex. “Where the hell you been, looking like that? Your shirt all stretched out and stuff.”
“Girl, in the streets beating ass.”
Summer’s eyes bucked. “What? Whose?”
“Okay, you know we were going to get her hair and nails and stuff done, right? Okay, so we go to the nail shop and we see Fallon. She’s inviting us to her sister in law’s house for a cookout or whatever, right?”
“Alex, you did not beat up Fallon?” Summer didn’t allow him to finish
“Not yet, but she will get popped eventually. I can just tell by her whole lil attitude that I might have to fuck her up.”
Summer leaned against the wall. “Man, what she do?” She looked at her watch. “You know what, y’all come in and wait until my lunch period. It’s in ten minutes. I can’t be standing out here like this.”
“Control your fucking kids. Some of these lil ugly bastards was already looking at me when we first got here.”
“Bitch, you’re a nigga dressed like a girl. What you think they’re going to do? They’re kids.”
“You know he ain’t got it all.” Rain looked at Alex.
“Whatever. Just control they asses.” Alex warned, as Summer opened the door and allowed them to follow her inside.
“Class, these are my sisters. Say hi.”
The kids spoke loudly as Alex and Rain made their way to the back of the class. They took the two chairs behind Summer’s desk and waited for her. Every so often, a few children turned around and looked at them, but it didn’t last long. The bell rang shortly after they entered.
Summer waited until the entire class had gone before closing and locking her door. “I have to lock my door. They act like they don’t see me enough during class. They be wanting to come in here and eat lunch too.”
“That’s sweet, Summer.” Rain leaned on Summer’s desk.
“No hell. I don’t know how she does it. I fucking hate kids. These lil bastards make my ass itch.”
Summer and Rain burst out laughing. Rain laughed harder than she had in days. She pushed Alex’s shoulder playfully as Summer sat across from them in one of the student desks with a bowl of grapes.
“Y’all want one?”
Rain grabbed the bowl from her and took some before passing it to Alex. When the bowl got back to Summer, she set it on the desk in front of her.
“Okay, now finish telling me what happened.”
“Okay, well, you know I told you Fallon was inviting us to her sister in law’s house, right?”
Summer nodded.
“Well, guess who her sister in law is, bitch.”
“Who?”
“Damien’s baby mama,” Rain said.
“Shut the fuck up. Y’all lying.”
Alex shook his head. “Nope, honey, but that ain’t all. So we’re standing there waiting on Fallon to finish talking to her when Rain takes off walking back to my truck, talking about she doesn’t want to go.” Alex pushed his hair over his shoulder. “You know my messy ass. I’m standing there taking pictures and trying to get Damien to see me and shit. So when she leaves, I’m all mad and shit. Bitch, why when we got in my car Rain tells me his baby mama is the hoe that’s been fucking with her.”
Summer’s face frowned in confusion. “Hold on. What? Why would she be after Rain?”
“That’s the same shit I wanted to know, since I’m the one fucking her man.”
“Rain, she’s the one that set your spot on fire?”
Rain nodded.
“How you know?”
“She said she remembered her voice. So, at first I wasn’t gon say nothing.” Alex looked at Rain. “Okay, I’m lying. I was always going to say something, but after I saw how shook this big bitch had Rain, I got mad, girl. I couldn’t even control myself. I just hopped out the car and hopped right on that hoe’s head. I was drilling her ass too.” Alex stood up and grabbed Rain’s hair. “Girl I had that bitch by the head like this, and I jerked her ass back.”
“Nigga, get you damn hands off my head.” Rain tried to loosen Alex’s grip on her.
They were all laughing at him as he let Rain’s head go, still hype. “Summer, when I tell you I gave it to her muthafucking ass. I gave it to her, best friend. You would have been proud.”
“I’m proud and I wasn’t even there. So what Damien do?”
“Tried to yell and scream, until he realized it was me beating that ass. Then he piped the fuck down.”
“So, she ain’t ask why you popped it off?”
“I ain’t give her time. I told her that ass whooping had been waiting for her before I walked off.”
“So why Fallon was about to get beat?”
“Because she was trying to take up for her psychopath sister in law.”
Summer looked at Rain and sucked he teeth. “I wish I was there. I would have punched her ass.”
“Why y’all being like that with Fallon? She was just taking up for her friend.”
Summer and Alex both rolled their eyes.
“She’s nice, y’all, don’t be like that.”
“She’s as good as beat the fuck up if she tries me again.” Alex turned his back to Rain and rolled his eyes in her direction.
Summer laughed and Rain pushed the back of his head playfully. “Y’all, I don’t know what to do. Like I don’t have no proof it’s that girl. All I know is her voice and that ain’t enough to do nothing with.”
“Like hell it ain’t. You better tell on that bitch. I mean that ass whooping might keep her on her ass for a few days, but what about after that? You want her to keep messing with you?” Summer looked at Rain for an answer.
“Just tell Love on her. Maybe he’ll knock her ass off and this will all be over.”
Rain slapped Alex’s shoulder again. “Why you have to say that?”
“Rain, put your hands on me one more time and I’ma beat you back into good spirits. I dun let it slide about ten times now. Don’t do it no more. You wanted to hit somebody you should have hit that damn girl at the store.”
Summer was laughing, but Rain didn’t find anything funny. Alex was laughing right along with Summer, but Rain still didn’t crack a smile.
“I don’t see why the two of y’all always trying to make everything into a joke.”
“Girl shut up. We just like to have fun. We can’t help you’re always so uptight about everything.”
“I’m not. I just don’t see the joke.”
Summer and Alex looked at each other before trying to si
mmer down their banter. Rain sat with her arms folded, staring at them both. When they were finally calm, she looked away.
“What do you want to do, Rain?” Summer asked her.
Rain shrugged.
“Well, you’re going to have to figure that out.” Alex looked at her.
They sat in Summer’s classroom with her until her lunch period was over, trying to talk and come up with what was next, before leaving. Summer let them know that she would come over Love’s house once she got off work. Once they had everything planned, Alex and Rain left. They drove to a totally different nail salon to finish their day.
Alex had asked Rain if she wanted to go home, but she continuously told him no. She needed to be out to keep her mind off of things. She was afraid if she went back home alone right then that she would slump back down into her depression, and she didn’t want that. Being that Alex didn’t either, he was more than happy to keep her with him until Love got home from work.
At first Rain was still a little awkward to be around because she was still being so quiet and withdrawn, but after a few hours of getting pampered, she started to come around. Alex watched her closely, making sure she was in her right mind throughout the day. He knew how hard it had been for her to lose the baby, and after the fight and seeing who the woman was, she really had to be stressed.
Rain was such a sweetheart, but she was going to have to get her life together with her current situations. Alex wouldn’t tell her today, but he would eventually. Once they had done everything they could, they decided to go back to Alex’s house.
As soon as they got in, Rain kicked her shoes off and told him that she was going to take a nap. He wasn’t tripping because he was tired too. He grabbed them both a blanket and pillow before coming back into the living room. She lay on one sofa, while he lay on the other.
Alex flipped the TV on for them to fall asleep on before scooting down and getting comfortable. Before long, and before either of them knew it, they had both fallen asleep. Alex probably would have still been asleep if his phone wasn’t ringing like crazy. He stuck his arm from beneath the covers and picked it up from the floor next to him.
