It’s almost Halloween when I’m writing this and I’m headed to two parties tonight, which for me is unprecedented! I’m even dressing up as a 1920’s flapper and I haven’t gotten into a costume for a party since my early 20’s – a very long time ago. (No, I haven’t gotten into a costume since then for any other reason, either. Fortunately, Craig Martelle hasn’t come up with that idea yet for a 20Books convention.)
First party is at the legendary amenity center about a quarter mile from my house. It’s legendary because I’ve written about it ever since it opened last July. It’s nicer than our houses and the HOA is continually throwing parties there with bands, food trucks and a cash bar. I’ve made the joke that we are all back in college, just with nicer dorms this time. Tonight’s party is called Boos and Booze and there’s a costume prize that maybe I even have a chance at winning.
Then my neighbors Alex and Vanessa are throwing their annual party that others tell me is legendary. No costume, no entry. I’m hitting it early before the serious drinking starts and heading home by ten. A big night for me, which you’d think the Offspring would know by now.
Last night we had a pretty typical Texas rainstorm for this time of year. Sudden and intense and creating flash flooding. The whole area is soil on top of bedrock so there’s no place for water to go. My area was hardest hit and just down the road is the flood zone. Frankly, that was a selling point for me because no one can build there leaving a lot of green space.
The Offspring, who rarely answers his phone called to ask if I was okay, but it was past ten at night. I was fine and asleep. He became alarmed and had Jackie Venson, his soon to be wife and famous blues guitarist, call me even though she was sitting next to him. He must think I screen my calls, but I always answer his. Wait, we’re not done. Then he called the neighbors and asked them to drive down the street and ring the doorbells. By the way, they weren’t under water so why would I be and why didn’t they point that out? And did I mention my doorbell doesn’t really make a very loud sound? Then they called another neighbor to see if they knew where I was.
By the time I woke up and saw my phone a lot of my neighborhood was looking for me. It’s nice to know that so many people care, including the Offspring. It also answers my question about whether I could die and dissolve into the floorboards before anyone would notice. I’m happy to report they’d find a warm corpse most likely. Happy Halloween everyone! I’ll be sitting outside with the bowl of candy next week with the good dog Lois Lane and sweet Leela barking their fool heads off in the window behind me. May all of you have a festive evening as well. More adventures to follow.
