“Will he like me?” I ask. I’ve never met a man’s parents, or in this case, grandparent, this early on. I’m also not dressed to be meeting people.
“He’ll love you. Your accent is adorable,” Devin assures me. “Plus, we’ll get you some new clothes and clean up at a hotel before we go there. I have to grab a rental car too.”
Our minds are on the same wavelength, and Devin has told me everything I need to know to feel comfortable going through with this. If anyone had told me that I would be living in Canada with a bad boy that I just met a few days ago, I would have told them that they were crazy. I don’t do that kind of thing.
Adventure called me, though, and I answered. That’s how I end trying to look casual as Devin pulls up to the tollbooth to pay and have a quick talk with the agent there. After that, we’re on our way to the park to make the final crossing. We’re going to make it.
Chapter Nineteen
The sky is a bright blue, not unlike Devin’s beautiful eyes. We’re below the clouds, which means that I can still see the green squares of farmland passing by beneath us. They’re so far away that they look like tiles on the bathroom floor when in reality, they stretch out for acres.
My hand is steady on the controls, guiding the plane through a predetermined flight path that’s long enough to put it in cruise control and have some fun. Before that, however, I want to get Devin in the pilot’s seat to see how he fairs.
“Get over here, big guy,” I say, waving at him to break his focus on the world outside the cabin.
Devin is staring out the window, a look of awe on his face. I would have thought that he had never been up in the air before, but I just took him up last weekend. He’s easy to entertain, though. He might even like flying more than I do.
Devin turns his head, ripping his eyes away from the sight below us. “What’s up?”
“I want you to fly it,” I say, letting go of the control stick and letting the plane drift along its current path.
“Don’t let that go,” Devin says, his eyes widening.
“Take it,” I say. “I want you to steer.”
“Jesus, Marybeth. This is how we die,” he says, shaking his head, but he still comes over and places his hand lightly on the control stick. “I don’t know what I’m doing.”
“Just hold it and don’t push it too far to either side,” I say, smiling as he focuses way too intensely on holding the stick still. He’s acting like any small movement will send us plummeting, and I find it adorable.
“You don’t have to flex your arms so much,” I say, his bulging biceps nearly popping out of his crisp white button-down shirt next to my face. “It’s not going to try to get away.”
Devin frowns, his eyes glued to the windshield. “We’re going to crash if you don’t take this from me.”
“Into what?” I ask, holding up my hands and gesturing to the sky outside the window.
“I don’t know, a cloud or something,” he mutters.
“You know that we can go through clouds, right?” I ask, laughing at his expense.
“Don’t make fun of me,” he says, letting go of the stick.
“Alright,” I say, smiling and shaking my head. “Don’t get too worked up about it, or I’ll make you land it.”
He laughs. “I don’t think crashing into the ocean qualifies as landing.”
“As long as we go out together,” I say, beaming at him. I’m just so happy to be up in the air with my pilot’s license all figured out. Everything came together better than I imagined it.
The past year has been nothing short of amazing. I’ve taken all the classes I need to become a pilot without having to sweat about money, thanks to Devin, and now I’m living my dream of flying planes over farmland to drop fertilizers on the crops.
Devin has only recently agreed to come up with me. Maybe that’s because I’m a better pilot now, but I think the real reason is that he has stopped worrying so much about his grandfather. The cartel’s money was put to good use, giving Devin’s grandfather many more happy years of life. He’s a joyful man, and in some ways, he reminds me of my father.
Devin and I are still living with him, per my request. I like the house that he has, and I know that Devin still wants to keep an eye on him. I don’t mind being around Devin’s grandfather, either. He likes to tell funny stories about Devin, which I can tease him about later. It’s all good fun.
I thought that Canada might be too cold for me after living in Texas all of my life, but I find it to be refreshing. Even the winter wasn’t all that bad, because we had plenty of snow, which I like to play in. Making snowmen and drinking hot cocoa wasn’t something I could do in Texas when I was younger, so I’m taking advantage of it now.
We haven’t seen nor heard anything about the cartel since we lost them on the border. I doubt that the police who pulled over the trucks did anything but give them a ticket, but the two that were shot on by Devin did make it into the news briefly. The police figured it was an internal cartel issue and closed the case, not wanting to get involved.
So, Devin and I are safe now. Sometimes I think about Texas, but there’s nothing for me there. Sure, it was where I was born and raised, but my heart is with Devin. He’s the love of my life, and I never want to lose him. The good thing is, he’s just as glued to me as I am to him. We couldn’t be happier.
“Devin,” I whisper as his gaze returns to the sky outside.
“Huh?” he says half-heartedly, not moving his head to look at me.
“Devin, I have something for you,” I say, pulling up my shirt and letting my breasts drop out.
He turns his head upon seeing my reflection in the glass and smiles. “You’re going to get yourself into trouble up here with those out.”
I laugh and remove my shirt completely. “Come arrest me, officer,” I tease, biting my lip in an attempt to look sexy.
I don’t have to try that hard. I can see that there is already a healthy erection growing in Devin’s blue jeans. He comes toward me and clasps a hand around each one of my breasts, squeezing them in his powerful hands.
“Keep your hand on the stick,” he says as he massages my breasts.
“Which one?” I ask, moving my hand toward his crotch.
He smiles and places his lips on mine, sinking in for a kiss thousands of feet in the air. We’re free, we’re in love, and we’re flying. This is all I need and then some.
The End.
