MYSTERY DATE
HARLEY
Do one thing every day that scares you. —Eleanor Roosevelt
I stare at the note on my phone a good long while, falling into a momentary trance despite the noise competing for my attention. There has been a tugging at my heart, at my spirit ever since I came across this quote last year, and then a quickening occurs in my chest, and just like that, I know it’s time to take on the challenge the feisty former first lady has seemingly thrown at me. I’m going to do one thing that scares me tonight, and I’m going to start right now. I hope.
“What’s hotter than a Whitney Briggs football player coming off a fresh hot win?” Teagan Collins shouts up over the music in the Black Bear Saloon. It’s boisterously loud, the air is thick with both the scent of fries and unbridled excitement, and the house band just started wailing “We ar
e the Champions” minus the insane vocal chops of Freddie Mercury.
The bar is situated across the street from our university and is often where you can find a congregation of students and faculty alike. It’s cozy in here, dark wood furniture, dark floors. They have a great menu, and there’s a dance floor and a poolroom in the back.
“All of the WB football players coming off a fresh hot win! And honey, you are so right. Those boys are sizzling tonight,” Colby, her roommate and comrade in lusty arms, shouts back as the three of us share a sultry cackle.
“Except for Eli Gates.” I rock my shoulders into both Teagan and Colby respectively as I sandwich myself between them. “There is nothing hot about his obnoxious ego.” True as God.
The playboy of Whitney Briggs might have a face that can spontaneously pop every ovary in the Western Hemisphere, but his inflated view of himself takes him down every single notch in my book. He’s a graduate student that they still allow to play every sport this school seems to offer, and all the jersey chasers couldn’t be happier.
Teagan chokes as she takes a moment to pull her gaze from the testosterone parade WB Mustangs moving into the establishment.
“You’re kidding, right?” she balks. “Half the girls on the Row would attest otherwise, considering they probably slept with him, and the other half only wish they could be so lucky.”
I can’t help but roll my eyes. It’s the second Friday in September, the first game of the season wrapped up over an hour ago, and the football team has showered and changed and is ready for their obligatory victory dinner, which usually consists of an entire herd of dead cattle just to feed the team.
Colby knocks her hip into mine. “She’s just fuming because she’s not the next to fall on his mattress.” They exchange a congratulatory high five and whoop their way over to a couple of girls from our dorm.
Despite unpopular opinion, I meant it. And I can assure the entire free world I am not salivating to fall over any mattress Eli Gates might per chance be walking past.
Besides, I pull out my phone amidst the melee and check the messages from my Hollow Brook Hot Honeys app—I’ve got my own hot prospects tonight, the very ones that scare me.
Hollow Brook Hot Honeys is the premier dating app that has taken both Hollow Brook and Whitney Briggs University by storm. It just so happens it was engineered entirely by my brilliant roomie, along with the aforementioned obnoxious walking, talking ego. Eli helped Serena out with her summer school project, which was constructing the app itself. Serena thought up all the important details, and Eli did this or that with the software.
Speaking of Serena’s summer course. Serena ended up falling hard for her instructor, Shep Collins, an attorney that she’s known forever. Serena’s sister happens to be married to Shep’s brother, so, in a way, they were destined to collide in some manner.
And Eli, well, suffice it to say, he’s benefited the most from the Hot Honeys app. Not that he actually needs to utilize its superpowers. Just knowing that he’s behind the inner mechanics of that lust trap has girls lining up for days to shower him with their appreciation—or just plain old shower with him.
“Please tell me you’re not using that crappy app,” an all too familiar voice gripes from behind, and I turn to find my sister, Harper, and her boy toy, Knox Toberman. Harper and I share the same shock of dark hair, long and luscious if I do say so myself, and same sculpted features that I’m hoping will catapult me to the top of the worldwide modeling scene. Knox is distressingly handsome and just as nice. Dark hair, chiseled features, classically handsome in every way. I’m more than thrilled Harper found herself a solid guy.
Our father, who happens to be one of the richest men in the Manhattan real estate scene, wasn’t so hot on staying loyal to my mother, thus the quest for my sister and me to land ourselves a stable and faithful man one day.
Harper hit a home run with Knox, but she had a bad punt with a jerk named Justin just before that. I figure I’ll have to kiss a few frogs myself before I hit a homer, so I say bring on the hairy toads and let’s get this horny thorny party started. And sadly, I did just that this past summer. I gave my heart and far more delicate parts of me to Whitney Briggs’ premier idiot, Tyler Swanson, who promptly threw my ticker into a blender while marking me off as a mere conquest. In the end, I was an inconsequential notch on his bedpost and nothing more.
I take a moment to glare at my sister. “None of your beeswax.” I pull the phone to myself and sneer over at my familial look-alike. We have a brother as well, Henry. He’s older by several years and has cystic fibrosis, but he’s never let that stop him. He’s currently running a one-man comedy show through the hospital circuit. And word on the sick street is, he’s killing it. Not as in death. I suppose where there are sickly people involved one must clarify. Just like I’m about to clarify something for my sister. “And FYI, my sweet Harp-Harp”—I don’t mind employing the nickname I had for her when I was a wee tot and her full name was too much for my tiny lips—“you don’t get a say in how I choose to navigate my dating life.”
Her mouth squares out in horror. “Don’t you dare step into those psycho-infested cyber waters. You do realize that there was a murder right here in Hollow Brook just last summer!”
“And it had absolutely nothing to do with the Hollow Brook Honeys.”
She inches back as if I slapped her. “Let’s see, Serena found the body, and she developed the app, so yes, my dear baby sister, it is more than loosely connected. There is some serious bad juju lurking in there.”
“Says the girl who found her man via a revenge romance she concocted,” I snipe right back, not minding at all that I just threw her past in her face.
A crowd bounces by, and she plucks a body right out of it as she shoves a rock-hard chest in my face.
“You owe my baby sister an apology, along with a refund of nineteen ninety-five. A complete rip-off if you ask me.”
My hands press against the brick wall before me, and I take a healthy step back, only to groan at the sight of the face that rock-hard chest is attached to. It’s none other than Whitney Briggs’ acclaimed gigolo in the making, Eli Gates.
“Back off before I vomit on your shoes,” I bark as I try to escape this unwanted interlude, but Harper has me caged in on one side, and the crowd is working me closer on the other end, forcing me to stumble against his chest as if I wanted to be here.
“Don’t even think of vomiting on my shoes.” Eli’s left brow hooks into his forehead as if he were slightly amused, and the maneuver only infuriates me further. Sure, Eli Gates is a hell of a good-looking guy, wavy black hair, eyes that look marbled with a mix of green, gray, and blue, and full lips that always seem to twist with amusement, anger, or all-out rage when he looks my way. I really don’t care which.
He nods over to Harper. “You better take your sister home. Baby girl sounds sick. I think she’s had one too many drinks.”
“She doesn’t drink.” Harper pegs me with a silent inquisition. “At least not if she knows what’s good for her. New York is in one week.” She makes a face. “And that’s sort of what I came to talk to you about.” She cringes. “I have to back out. I’m working on a team project, and I’m booked straight through midterms. Sorry!” She ducks as if I might swat her, but I lunge over and hug her instead.
“That’s great! Are you kidding? I’m nineteen. I can more than handle Manhattan on my own. We practically grew up there.” I look over to Eli, suddenly grateful for his presence because he’s about to help me prove a point. “My dad has done a ton of business in the city, and I just so happen to know the Big Apple like the back of my hand. Trust me when I say a grown girl like me can handle a quick weekend jaunt to the Eastern Seaboard.” I turn back to my overprotective big sis. “Especially when I’m traveling for business.”
Eli grunts, “What kind of business?”
I shoot him a look that says none of your beeswax, but since I’m trying hard to prove to Harper that I’m a dignified a
dult, I swallow my pride and my better judgment and proceed with the runaway train I’ve inadvertently boarded.
“I’m a model.” I try to shrug it off as if it were no big deal. Here’s the thing. I hate telling people that. In fact, I don’t want anyone at WB to know about it. Of course, my roommate knows, but that’s because it’s required by law that your roomie knows everything in the event you go missing and they need to identify a body, or a failing career. Which brings me to the real reason I’ve yet to shout my chosen profession from the rooftops. I’ve had trouble booking gigs. Print ads? Commercials? I’ve got nada. My agent is a deadbeat, and I had to fire her this past summer, but I have a coveted interview with Ashley Grayson, as in the Ashley Grayson, talent manager extraordinaire coming up this weekend. And while I’m there, I might even hit up some cold auditions that I found out about through the grapevine. A couple are commercials for a popular hair product, and one is a print ad that has a casting call out for the masses for an all nude rooftop campaign they’re doing for some politically correct altruistic purpose, but I don’t really care about which way it’s leaning, so much as that it leads to some discoverability for me. I really need to beef up my portfolio.
I turn back to my sister. “Dad says I can use his company plane, so no TSA lines or time lost at the airport. I’ve already booked a room at our favorite hotel in Midtown, and I’ll take a cab to the interview.”
“Sorry, sis. That’s a no-go.” Harper winces like I might spontaneously deck her, and, honest to God, I might. “If I’m not in the city, neither are you.”
