“One hundred.”
The short man snorted. “That’s funny! I didn’t risk my shit for one hundred bucks. One thousand!”
“Two hundred.”
“Eight, and a thank you kindly for not punching your cadaveric face.”
“You’re very bad at this, Eugene,” Pacific said. “Listen carefully. I’ll give you four hundred and your mood booster. This is my last offer.”
Eugene’s jaw visibly tightened. He outstretched his hand. “Fine,” he grunted.
Pacific handed him the cash and the small bottle. The short man took them roughly.
“I gotta ask you,” Eugene was looking at Pacific with disdain. “How does it feel, to pick at corpses?”
Pacific joined his hands behind his back and smiled. “I’m not the crow, Eugene. I’m the priest who gives the absolution.”
Eugene huffed then looked at Alfred. “Don’t know why you’re with him, kid,” he said. “Don’t know how he’ll use you in the end.” He glanced at Pacific. “Just know that whatever he promised you, he’ll deliver. Yeah, and you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
Eugene regarded Alfred one last time, then he limped his way out of a big group of white collars and disappeared out of sight.
“Let’s move on.” Pacific walked away from the Spear and the frenzies that surrounded it.
