She lay waiting on the bed, not a scrap of clothing left on her. She ogled Steph freely—this gorgeous woman who had defied all odds and chosen her.
Steph climbed onto the bed and pressed herself to Dominique’s side. Dominique felt the dildo against her hip. Her arousal went up another notch.
“You mean business,” she whispered.
“You have no idea.” The Steph who had walked out of the bathroom was a different version of the Steph that Dominique had daily interactions with. This was Steph, the ultimate seductress. That alluring side of her that Dominique had found so irresistible from the very beginning was on full display.
Steph kissed her on the cheek, very gently, confounding Dominique again. She had expected Steph to hungrily lunge at her the instant she’d come out of the bathroom. But Steph had chosen otherwise. That was another thing Dominique couldn’t get enough of. Steph was unpredictable. Dominique thrived in unpredictable environments. Was that perhaps why she was having so many doubts lately? Had being president become too predictable for her? She chuckled. That was impossible.
“Something funny?” Steph pushed herself a little closer against Dominique’s flank.
“Goodness no.” Dominique turned to kiss Steph on the mouth.
While they kissed, Steph’s hand meandered to Dominique’s breast. With the lightest of touches, she circled Dominique’s nipple, until it rose to the hardest peak. Even then, Steph didn’t stop. She varied the width of the circle her finger was drawing, but that was it. All the while, Dominique felt the dildo press into her flesh, and every single second of it lifted her desire to higher levels.
Steph withdrew from the kiss and bent over Dominique’s rock-hard nipple. She blew a gentle breath over it, while her hand caught hold of Dominique’s other nipple. She treated it to the same, tender ministrations, while she sucked Dominique’s nipple into her mouth.
Dominique let her hands roam along Steph’s long back, gently at first, but soon her nails were digging into Steph’s flesh. One of the biggest downsides to being president was that it had considerably diminished the time they could devote to lovemaking. On any to-do list, it always came last. As much as Dominique didn’t want it to be so, it was the simple truth. Her own—and Steph’s—needs came last. Well behind the country’s, the party’s, and her family’s.
But tonight, they had this moment. However short it may be, they’d make it count.
Steph sucked Dominique’s nipple between her lips with a little more intention. Her teeth grazed it, making Dominique’s back arch up. She wanted more—she always wanted more of Steph. Would it still be like this when she was no longer president? When they could frolic like this at all hours of the day?
“Fuck me, babe,” she blurted out.
“Oh, I will,” Steph whispered in her ear. “But you will need an extra-large dose of patience tonight.” With that, she took Dominique’s nipple between her teeth and held it a little longer. The dildo was still pressing against Dominique’s thigh. But she wasn’t the one giving orders tonight. This wasn’t a situation in which a direct glance in someone’s direction could give her what she wanted instantly.
Tonight, in this bed, she wasn’t the president. She wasn’t a woman filled with doubt about her future. She was lying in her fiancée’s arms and, just for a little while longer, she could pretend that moments like these made up her life. And she and Steph could bridge the small divide that always grew between them when they hadn’t spent enough time together. Tonight, they could set things right. Perhaps, afterwards, Dominique would even find the clarity she craved so much.
Steph kissed a path from Dominique’s nipples, along her neck, back to her mouth. She halted and gazed down at Dominique. A small smile played on her lips.
“You look gorgeous tonight,” Steph whispered. “You look… all mine.” Her smile broadened.
“I am all yours,” Dominique said, and pulled her in for another kiss.
She held Steph close. She could feel her heartbeat, the warm body that anchored her, that gave Dominique something to return to every day.
Dominique melted into the kiss. As their tongues danced together, she lost herself in the moment more and more. The touch of Steph’s skin against hers, the promise of the dildo, the delicious kisses they were exchanging. They all lifted her onto another plane, took her out of her body and out of her mind. It no longer mattered how long Steph took. What was happening now was already utterly divine.
It seemed as though no time had passed at all when Steph broke their kiss and shot Dominique a different kind of smile.
She planted kisses along her neck again, but only made a brief stop at Dominique’s breasts. She was obviously eager to make her way further down. To get Dominique ready for what came next.
With a contented sigh, Dominique let her legs fall apart. Perhaps this was the most delicious moment of all. Steph was a skilled lover, that had been clear from the beginning. Dominique had never felt the slightest twinge of disappointment—unlike when she used to share her bed with Philippe. With Steph, everything was different. She was utterly dependable, in and out of the bedroom. When Dominique opened her legs for Steph, when she saw Steph bend towards her, she always knew spectacular things would follow.
Steph kissed Dominique’s inner thigh. Up and down she went. Driving Dominique a little crazier. Ah, to have this in her life. To have a woman like Steph be part of her journey. It made everything so much more bearable.
Steph’s lips stalled. Dominique glanced down. She saw Steph looking at her—and the sight of it only aroused her further. Then there was that other object, jutting out between Steph’s legs.
Next thing she knew, Steph’s lips touched down close to her clit. She kissed Dominique, avoiding the pulsing heat of her clit. She sure knew how to drive Dominique to the brink—and leave her teetering there.
Finally, Steph’s tongue flicked over Dominique’s clit. The country could be falling apart right now but Dominique couldn’t care less. The only emergency consuming her now was her own dangerously rising levels of arousal.
This was how Steph put her back together—made her whole. Made her step out of herself to come back renewed and refreshed.
Dominique did what she always did. She reached for Steph’s shoulders and dug her fingertips into her flesh. She needed to feel more of her, everything she possibly could.
Steph kept licking her clit with deft strokes. If she kept going like that, all the fun would be over before the dildo even came into play. But Steph knew her well. She’d once told her, after they’d been together a few months, that she’d never before known the joys of making love to the same person over and over again. That she had no idea it could change her. What a thrill it was to get to know the ins and outs of another person’s desire—and how only such intimate knowledge allowed her to nudge Dominique beyond her boundaries from time to time.
Together, they had done things Dominique could never have imagined—even in the short time allotted for such things to a head of state.
Steph withdrew her tongue. She glanced up at Dominique’s face, then down between her legs again. This was no time for pushing boundaries.
Steph dragged her fingers through Dominique’s wetness. Then, as she stared deeply into Dominique’s eyes, she slid them inside. She started fucking Dominique while keeping her gaze fixed on hers.
Dominique had trouble keeping her eyes open. Steph touching her like that was simply too divine. And this was just an in-between step. Yet, there was something about the softness of Steph’s fingers inside of her, coupled with that determined, confident look in her eyes, that made her feel so close to her fiancée.
It was as though Steph could read her mind, because she didn’t withdraw her fingers just yet—even though she must have gauged by now how ready and wet Dominique was to receive the dildo.
Instead, Steph revved up the intensity of her thrusts. Dominique could feel the tip of the dildo lightly bounce against her thigh every time Steph thrust de
ep inside of her. When Steph kept her fingers inside even longer, curling them up deep inside of her, and then bent over again to lavish Dominique’s clit with a few well-aimed strokes of her tongue, it was enough for Dominique to topple right over the edge of arousal, and give way to a massive orgasm.
The walls of her pussy clenched hard around Steph’s fingers, trapping them.
The mere promise of the dildo had been enough tonight. And Dominique knew that simply wearing it would have made Steph excited beyond control.
Steph withdrew her fingers slowly, then pushed herself up. She brought her face close to Dominique’s, a sly grin on her lips.
Dominique wanted to ask what was so amusing, but she didn’t have the words for it yet. She was still recovering. She couldn’t wait to get her hands on her fiancée, though. But first, she’d need to get that dildo off her. She reached for the strap lining Steph’s hip.
Steph shook her head. “I’m not done with that yet, Madam President.”
Steph
“Penny for your thoughts,” Dominique said. She had a blissful smile on her face. A smile Steph could get used to seeing—but she knew it only came out to play when Dominique was fully relaxed like this.
“I have none,” Steph said.
“That’s actually impossible.” Dominique ran a hand through Steph’s hair.
“If I’ve learned anything from being the First Lesbian,” Steph said, “it’s that I need to live in the moment so I can at least enjoy it while it’s happening. You could get a call any minute, and then the moment would be gone. If I had spoiled it with any other thoughts than how amazing you are, and that very special look on your face when you climax, I would truly have wasted it.”
“Goodness me. Have you been taking Philippe and Angelique’s mindfulness classes too?”
“Way to ruin my moment, bringing your ex-husband into the bedroom.”
“He’s not here, darling.” Dominique scooted closer to her again. “It’s just you and me.”
“You know what I mean.” Steph kissed her gently on the forehead.
Dominique laid her head on Steph’s chest and Steph gathered her closer into her arms. “I talked to him about… well, the elephant in the room, I guess.”
Steph sat up a bit. A twinge of jealousy shot through her.
“I wanted to know how the kids were doing and wanted to ask his opinion on how they would react,” Dominique said.
“What did he say?” Steph stroked Dominique’s upper arm to indicate that she was okay with this. Dominique and Philippe would always have a certain degree of intimacy between them because of the children, and she preferred it to how other divorced parents spoke to each other.
“He assured me that if I do decide to run again, the kids will be all right.”
“Of course they will be. This is what they know.”
“This isn’t what they’ve always known.”
“True.” Steph pulled her closer. Of course, this wasn’t only about Lisa and Didier missing their mother. It was just as much about Dominique missing them. Apart from having the most difficult job in the country, she had to allow her offspring to be raised by a man she had divorced.
“When are you going to tell me what you really think?” Dominique’s voice had grown a little tenser.
“I’ve learned not to do that,” Steph blurted.
Dominique shot up, liberating herself from Steph’s grasp.
“Which is another perfect example of why I should throw in the towel now that I have the chance. I don’t want you to feel as though you can’t share your thoughts with me.”
Steph remembered her conversation with Aurore. How she had claimed that she hadn’t sacrificed that much for this relationship. In the grand scheme of things, she believed she hadn’t. Because the trade-off was a life, however fragmented, with Dominique.
“I may have learned to hold my tongue on certain matters but I’ll still tell you exactly how things are when it comes to us. And this is how it is. But you have to remember, I’m not here against my will. I’ve fought that battle and I know I want to be with you, despite the limitations your presidency sets for our relationship. There’s little use pretending those limitations aren’t there.”
“I know, which is why—”
Steph held up her hand. They were both stark naked and it was perhaps not the best of circumstances in which to have this discussion, but that was just another quirk of their relationship. Post-sex was sometimes the only opportunity they had for a much-needed talk. “No. Don’t say it. It’s human of you, and perfectly normal, for you to think about what would be best for Lisa and Didier, and our relationship, and that’s one of the things I love about you. You care so much. Which is exactly what makes you such a great president. But this decision has to come from inside you. You can’t base it on how it would change things for anyone else. This is a time to be really and truly selfish. Everyone, and this includes the children, expects you to do what you’re supposed to do, and that is run again. So no one will ever hold that against you—except you.”
“I’m so torn.” Dominique’s voice broke a little. “Having to make this decision so quickly is tearing me apart, because I just don’t know. It’s not like me. I always know. I know to trust my instincts. It has gotten me this far. But I’m really at a loss when it comes to this and that very fact makes me think that not wanting to run might actually be my first instinct, and it’s just as hard for me to come to terms with it than it is for everyone else.”
“Come here.” Steph opened her arms. Dominique eagerly crept into her embrace again. “I know what you should do,” Steph whispered. “You have to go away for a few days. Go to the house in Juan-les-Pins. Think this through. You need silence and quiet time, otherwise, you’ll never find out what it is you truly want.”
“I can’t just go away for a few days,” Dominique started.
“Remember when Lisa hurt her hand?” Steph asked. “Remember how you followed your instinct then and you didn’t leave her side until she was dismissed from hospital?”
“But that was my daughter—”
“This is the rest of your life. It’s equally important. If not more so. You have to make the right decision for you, only then can you be the best mother for them. If anything, so you don’t end up bitter with regret. You need to figure this out. On your own. And you need to do it soon.”
“You won’t come with me?”
“No.” It was hard for Steph to be this tough. “But I will tell Solange for you if you want.”
“She’ll have a nervous breakdown on the spot.”
Steph was glad Dominique was capable of a joke so quickly again. “She won’t, because that would mean she’d have to show some emotion in front of me and I don’t think it’ll come to that.”
“Maybe I can arrange something for next weekend,” Dominique said.
“You won’t arrange a thing. I will arrange this for you.” Steph didn’t add that she didn’t trust Dominique to arrange a secret getaway for herself.
“You’re so strict sometimes.”
“Who else is going to tell the president what to do?” Steph said.
Dominique scoffed. “That’s one of the biggest lies they tell you when you dream of becoming president. That you’ll be the one calling all the shots while, most of the time, it feels like the entire country is telling me what to do and I have no say in any of it.”
“I’m the one who loves you the most, though. And the one you can trust with your life,” Steph said. “Don’t listen to anyone else. Only yourself. And me.”
“I can’t believe you’re sending me away,” Dominique said in a faux-sulky tone.
“It’s for your own good. Imagine how you’ll feel when you finally have clarity on the matter. You’ll be a much better president for it.” Steph kissed her on the forehead. “No matter the choice you make, I will always support you.”
Episode Twenty
Claire
Claire felt as though she wa
s starring in a spy movie. Meeting Aurore on the sly had an air of cloak-and-dagger about it that thrilled her. And Claire needed some thrills. She and Margot had gone away for the weekend. They had driven away from the rain in Paris, hoping that the weather would be better in Brittany, but it wasn’t. So Margot had done what she always did: found a cosy corner on the sofa and read a medical journal, shrouding herself in silence for hours on end.
Under normal circumstances, Claire didn’t have a problem with that. She knew well before they married that Margot was obsessed with work—she had to be as a surgeon—and that a relaxed weekend always included catching up on the latest research in her field. She also knew that Margot craved silence more than most.
If they’d stayed at home, Claire would have been able to occupy herself. And it wasn’t as though they could engage in some bedroom activity to pass the time during their weekend away from the city.
So Claire had turned to her phone and she had started researching Anne Rivière. Her research had culminated in sending an email to Aurore, which had resulted in the secret rendezvous she was on her way to now.
She should have worn a large-brimmed hat to cover up some of her face, she thought, as she made her way along the Bois de Boulogne. Aurore’s apartment wasn’t actually that far from where she used to live on the Boulevard Gouvion St-Cyr. Before Claire had moved in with Margot in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, doubling her commute time to work.
She had rented out her old place. She should have kept it free, she thought, for occasions like this, when she was up to something every single person she was close to would frown upon. Except for Aurore—perhaps. She was about to find out.
“Come on in.” Aurore greeted her warmly. “Welcome to my humble abode.” There was nothing humble about an apartment in this arrondissement overlooking the Bois de Boulogne, Claire thought, but wisely held her tongue. “Although I must admit I’m somewhat surprised to find you in my home.”
