Scarlett came over to the sewing circle’s table and whispered her good news to them, and Jane couldn’t wipe the smile off her face. It made her so happy to think of the love Scarlett and Peter would share not only with each other, but with the children. Pieces that had been torn apart would be put back together with the ties of mutual trust, respect, and communication.
“Two couples and two weddings,” Esther said with a contented sigh. “We’d better get working on another quilt.”
“Not only that, but we need to get working on our next couple,” Nola replied. “Who’s next?”
“I hope you don’t mind my speaking up, but I’ve been thinking a great deal about Kitty lately,” Bonnie said. “Ever since Miriam got engaged, Kitty seems lost, as though she feels she’s being left behind.”
“She and Miriam are very close,” Esther agreed. “It makes sense that she’d feel like Miriam is moving on without her.”
“Is Kitty looking for a romantic relationship?” Jane asked. She’d actually thought the opposite—the girl seemed to be enjoying herself perfectly well as an unattached young woman.
“She says she’s fine, but I catch her daydreaming with a wistful look on her face,” Bonnie replied.
“Oh, dear. Not the wistful look.” Maude shook her head. “Once they start looking wistful, it’s best to marry them off as soon as possible.”
“Is it decided, then?” Jane asked. “All in favor of helping Kitty?”
“Aye!” the voices chimed, echoed by Viola’s warbled assent.
“I just have to say something,” Thora said. “When we first started this, I imagined we’d be doing more . . . oh, I don’t know. Sending secret letters and lurking behind trees to watch our projects. I’m a bit disappointed.”
“Don’t be disappointed,” Jane told her. “We’ve only just started, really—we have no way of knowing what will be needed next time, and if there’s any secret letter sending to be done, you’ll be the one to do it.”
That cheered Thora considerably, and the ladies went back to watching all their dear family members playing games and chasing butterflies. Jane honestly couldn’t imagine herself feeling any more peaceful or any more content than she did in that moment, surrounded by everyone she loved.
