…I drag myself on my elbows toward the bluish glow that starts to dither and waver…
“Hurry, child! Before it closes!”
…Like iron manacles, Abe’s hands clutch my right arm; Miyu’s hand, with steely firmness, gets a hold of my left shoulder. Together, they pull me inside the blue light…
…they draw me through the portal, while the scar of light shrinks, collapses into itself…
“This isn’t over, Russel!” Barboza’s voice promises from somewhere far away, cold and clear as ever. “This is not over yet.”

…becomes tiny…
…disappears.
A force pulls me back, up, away.
Sveta’s seat was empty when I arrived back in the Lobby.
“Behind you, boss,” her voice said.
I swung my hover-chair around. Next to the giant, stainless-steel vault door, Sveta was standing proudly. And she beamed, like a thousand-watt lightbulb.
“Please be a dear, Svetty,” I said, “and for once tell me you have good news. Nothing but good news.”
“Sure thing, boss,” she agreed. “As you command!”
With an ominous click and a ponderous rumble, which sounded exactly like victory—not final, not complete, but I had to take my minor triumphs where I could—the vault door opened, revealing a dark blue wall of light.
“Congratulations on advancing to Istoria’s square two, Jake.” She smiled. “Welcome to Multiplayer.”
I gazed at the blue wall for a while. Then, I rolled up my left sleeve, uncovering the little green-and-blue hummingbird on my forearm. “All right, then,” I said to the little bird, “let’s not keep our human opponents waiting, shall we?”
The blue wall throbbed softly, welcoming me.
I pushed the hoverchair forward and moved through the light.
