  AUTHOR’S NOTE

Some people may think that this story is completely made up, but I can tell you that one part of it is completely true, and I saw it with my own eyes. While traveling in France, I visited the cathedral in Bayeux. It is a stunning church, huge and full of centuries of art and prayer. It also has a crypt underneath it that dates, supposedly, from the 13th century. The columns and much of the painted decorations inside remain. There is also a space cut into the far wall, just like there is in my story, where a body once lay. Scattered all over the floor of that cavity are coins. When I looked closer, I realized that there was a long twig inside, a rock wrapped in bootlaces, and a metal wire whisk. My suspicion was that all of these items had been used by thieves to scrape out the money that had been left as offerings, and then the thieves had put the items so far through the grate that they could not retrieve them. Sure enough, two of the older ladies at the giftshop confirmed my theory. One of them, who was very patient with my broken French and who was probably at least ninety-years-old, had a very strong opinion about what sort of person would steal from the church, and told me it had happened before.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR – Carolyn L. Dean

I've been writing and making stories in my head as early as I can remember. In third grade, I came home, set my lunchbox down, and told my mother I wanted to be a writer. Luckily, Mom was supportive.

I've been a published author for a few years now, under different names and genres, but the thought of writing about a small coastal town in Oregon, and about its loves and mysteries and holidays and people has been with me for years. To be honest, I am always a bit scared to dump those ideas onto the written page, but hope you'll enjoy getting to meet the people who inhabit my imagination.

In real life, I'm married with kids, live on the West Coast of the US, and own a hobby farm just outside of my favorite small town. I’m a full-time author. I love to travel and can often be found strolling down a windy beach, holding onto the string of a high-sailing dragon kite.
