I smiled as I brushed my fingers over her cheek. Emma leaned into my hand, relishing my touch. “I’m just glad you’re okay. I was so worried when I saw the crash, and I couldn’t find you. I thought you were dead. I was out of my mind, but now you’re safe, and we’re together. That’s all that matters. I’m going to check on when they’re going to transport you home. He said it’d be sometime today, but I’ll find out exactly when. I’ll see that you get settled in at home, and then I’ll head out to pick up Todd and all his stuff right after. And remember, we have to watch Jenkins and Jackie closely. Keep an eye on everything they’re putting in your IV. I’d even say take it out, but I know you need the fluids and the antibiotics as well as the pain meds. If they come back, pretend to still be sleeping.”
Emma looked at me, lovingly. “I’ll keep an eye out. Hurry back, would you? I need a massage.”
I gave Emma a sly smirk at her massage comment before I opened the door slowly, peeking out into the hall before closing the door behind me. The hallway was empty, so I made my way back to the nurse’s station.
Thankfully, the polite young man who pointed me in the direction of the gift shop earlier was there.
“Excuse me, can you, by any chance, tell me when Emma Cross will be going home? Dr. Jenkins said transportation was arranged for today. I just need to know what time, please.” I asked as politely as possible. He wasn’t an asshole like everyone else I had interacted with here today, so I needed to keep him on my side if I could.
“Sure thing. Let me take a look and see what we have scheduled,” he replied as he typed away on the keyboard in front of him.
The young man’s credentials that hung around his neck said his name was David Davies. I couldn’t help but think of the cruel nicknames school kids would have called him. Double D came to mind immediately, bringing a smile to my face. Emma’s sense of humor apparently found a place in my brain since I was thinking like her now. I had to stifle a laugh at my own joke. I didn’t want David here thinking I was laughing at him. With a name like that, he probably had some kind of convoluted reasoning that everyone was always laughing at him. I didn’t need to unintentionally stir that up.
“It looks like her transport is scheduled to show up any minute now, and Nurse Simpson will be riding with her as well as staying with Miss. Cross for the next week to help with recovery. It’ll be about a half-hour before we come to collect Miss. Cross for transport. Is there anything else I can help you with, ma’am?” David asked politely.
“One last thing, since you’ve been the most helpful person I’ve met here, David.” I smiled at him, and he smiled back. “Nurse Simpson, have you worked with her a lot?”
“Sure, she’s been here since I started a few years ago. She seems nice enough. Why do you ask?” David looked up at me, questioningly.
If Matt and Emma were right, which after everything I’ve experienced, I could safely assume they were, then no one could be trusted. I had to be careful how I phrased my response to David since I had no idea if he was going to keep our conversation to himself or if it was going to go straight back to someone at The Company.
“I was just asking. Jackie’s been super helpful in the past, but she seems a bit off today. I was just curious if everything was all right with her, but I didn’t know if you knew her like that.”
“Oh, yeah. Sure. We talk here and there. Nothing really outside of work stuff, but now that you mention it, Jackie does seem a bit different today. I’m sure she’s just tired. It’s been a long week for all of us. Double shifts and overtime. Summer tends to lead to more accidents and in turn, more surgeries, so we’ve been pretty busy. I’m sure that’s all it is.”
I patted the top of the desk and gave David another polite smile. “I’ll bet you’re right. She was with Miss. Cross until pretty late last night and up early this morning to get her into surgery. I’m sure once she gets some rest, she’ll be back to her old self again. Thanks for the chat, David. Have a great day.”
“You too, ma’am.”
I turned and walked back down the hall to Emma’s room, contemplating my conversation with David. I couldn’t say for sure that he didn’t work for The Company, but he didn’t seem like the type. He was friendly, but he was far too submissive to be part of what I knew of their business. I wouldn’t forget his name, that’s for sure, so I made a mental note to give it to Matt for him to check into. It’s always good to have some sort of medical professional as a friend if needed, and it seemed that Emma and I had need of them more than I cared to admit in the recent past. David Davies could prove to be useful.
Chapter 4
I made it back to Emma’s room, and she was happily munching on her dark chocolate with one of the lights on in the room. Definitely an improvement.
“I see you’re feeling a little better,” I laughed as I took a seat next to her.
“Yeah. I coughed up a gob of crap, and I feel much better. It hurt like hell, and my throat’s still sore, but the chocolate makes it feel so much better,” Emma groaned in content as she shoved another piece of the decadent candy in her mouth.
“That sounds, ugh, yummy. So, you’re being taken home in the next half-hour. The van is pulling in soon. Is there anything you need me to pack up for you?”
“I don’t think so. I don’t even remember getting here,” Emma laughed.
“Did anyone come in while I was gone?”
“Nope, not a single soul.”
“Good. This place is lovely, but it gives me the creeps. Like it’s too nice, and the redhead at the reception desk is a stuck-up bitch.”
“Wow, Mia. I think I’m really starting to rub off on you. When we met, I imagined you were someone who’d never said a mean word about anyone, ever. Now look at you. Calling other women bitches. I like this more dominant side of you,” Emma giggled.
I loved the sound of her laugh.
“You know, I was just thinking the same thing. The other nurse I asked about your transport, his name was David Davies, and all I could think of was how the kids in school probably made fun of him and called him Double D.”
“Yep, that definitely sounds like something I would say,” Emma laughed and cringed at the jostling of her bandaged leg.
“See, that’s what you get for poisoning my brain with your sick sense of humor. Karma’s a bitch, baby.”
“You love my twisted sense of humor. Don’t even pretend you don’t. There’s a lot more you love about me, isn’t there, my pet?” Emma asked, her eyes suddenly growing dark and mischievous. “Ever done it in a hospital before?”
“What? No!” I blurted out. “And you shouldn’t even be thinking about that in your condition, Emma.”
“I’m hopped up on pain meds, or at least that’s my excuse for the moment. Come sit next to me. I want to feel your tight pussy cum for me.”
The butterflies in my stomach fluttered rapidly at her vulgar sexual words. I was appalled but aroused at the same time. My brain said I should have a seat as far away from Emma as possible while we waited for the nurses to come get her, but my body craved her touch, and I found myself practically floating to her bedside. I knelt on the bed next to Emma and leaned down to kiss her.
Our lips met, and it was as if fire scorched my entire body. Just Emma’s lips on mine filled me with passion and lust, making me lose all inhibitions. Her left hand slid down my neck, over my chest, and under my shirt. I wasn’t wearing a bra since I ran out of the house so quickly this morning, and her fingertips found my nipple hard and waiting for her touch. She rolled my bud between her fingers, moaning into my mouth before slipping her hand down and under my jeans.
My heart was pounding at the possibility that anyone could walk in at any moment, but Emma’s commanding embrace was so intoxicating I threw the thought of being caught to the back of my mind as soon as it popped up. Emma’s hand dipped low into my hot wet core. I moaned into her mouth as she sucked my lip into her mouth. She found my hard clit immediately and began teasing me,
rubbing me in all of the right places.
“That’s it, my pet. Let yourself go. Cum for me. I want to feel you cum so hard for me. Only for me. You’re mine. All mine, Mia.”
Emma’s words were like a trigger being pulled. My entire core tightened and began to release immediately. Emma slipped two fingers deep inside my slit as the palm of her hand continued the pressure on my pulsating nerves. I stifled a moan into Emma’s shoulder and curled my hips into her touch. My body finally relaxed, and Emma gently pulled her fingers from my jeans and began rubbing my breasts again. I felt my warm juices on her hand, covering my nipples.
Emma lifted my shirt and coaxed me to sit up higher so she could suck my chest into her mouth.
“Oh, Mia. I can taste your pussy on your tits, and you taste so good. God, I want to lick you,” she breathed the words slowly into my chest.
I wanted to throw Emma down on the bed and devour her, but I knew I couldn’t. This was going to be a rough recovery for both of us.
I had just finished cleaning myself up in the bathroom when Nurse Simpson and Dr. Jenkins walked into the room. Jackie nodded her head at me in greeting as she usually did, but there was no smile. She still seemed to be grumpy. I expected it had something to do with her being told by someone within The Company to sedate Emma and Dr. Jenkins not allowing her to do so. I was going to have to keep a close eye on Jackie over the next week while she stayed with Emma, Todd, and me.
Dr. Jenkins plastered a gigantic smile on his face as he clasped his hands together before speaking. “Great news, Emma. You’re going home. Nurse Simpson will be staying with you for the next seven days to make sure you’re comfortable, to administer your medications and keep an eye on you. I was able to clean the wound out thoroughly, but we want to be sure you don’t get any infections. Unfortunately, since you were walking around on the break for quite some time, there was a great deal of damage to the bones and surrounding tissues. I had to do extensive repairs with quite a few more sutures, screws, and rods than I would have expected, but I anticipate that, in time, you’ll to make a full and complete recovery. Now let’s get you home and make sure you don’t overdo it, please. I know how you are and that you like to do everything yourself, so...”
Emma interrupted Dr. Jenkins. “Oh, you don’t have to worry about me, Doc. Mia and her son, Todd, are moving in with me. They’re going to help take care of me, so I won’t be tempted to do more than I should,” she smiled affectionately, looking at me.
I looked at Jackie, and her face showed she was less than pleased with this new information.
Dr. Jenkins seemed to be happy about it, though. “That’s great news. Congratulations ladies. Mazel tov!”
“It’s only temporary, until Emma is better, anyway,” I smiled shyly at the attention.
Emma laughed, “She says that now, but don’t worry Doc. I’ll have Mia here selling her apartment before you know it.” Emma winked at me as Jackie glared at the two of us.
I was beginning to think there was something else that was bothering Jackie. She seemed to be taking this too personally. First, she said she was told to keep Emma sedated for as long as possible, but Dr. Jenkins didn’t get the same instructions. Now she was getting angry that I was moving in with Emma. There had to be more to this. I had to figure this out another time, though. Right now, we needed to get Emma home and resting comfortably so I could go get Todd.
I followed the ambulance back to Emma’s house and got her all tucked into her hospital bed with the special lift thing to elevate her leg. The bed looked entirely out of place in her massive bedroom decorated in soft hues of purple and cream. The cold, hard ivory plastic and chrome metal bed didn’t quite fit her decor, but it would serve its purpose. Once she was up and moving around again, it would be gone, and her normal bed would be put back. Things would get back to normal, eventually.
Once Emma was relaxing comfortably, I texted Todd that I’d be leaving soon to pick him up, so I’d be there just after eight o’clock. He texted back right away that he was all packed and ready to go. He said Daisy and Ben were fighting about something, so the quicker he could get out of there, the better.
I kissed Emma goodbye and made sure she didn’t need anything before I left, and she said all she needed was Todd and I, which made me happy.
As I was walking out, I saw Jackie on the front stairs having a smoke. I was going to take the opportunity to chat with her. I needed to see what if any information I might be able to gain from her.
“Hey, Jackie. How are you doing?”
“I’m fine, thanks. Heading out?” Jackie replied dryly, taking another drag from her cigarette.
“Yeah, I’m going to pick up Todd. Since it’s so late, we’ll probably stay the night and head back here in the morning. Are you okay? You seem a little off recently. I want to make sure you’re all right,” I asked, feigning compassionate interest.
Jackie held her cigarette by her side and crossed her arm over her waist in a closed-off gesture. Her body language told me she was instantly uncomfortable with my question.
“I’m good. It’s just been a, ugh, a long few days, I guess. I’ll be fine once I get a good night’s rest.”
“Okay, as long as you’re okay, Jackie. You’ll let me know if something’s bothering you, though, right?” I reached out a hand to brush Jackie’s arm in a comforting display of kindness.
Jackie looked at my hand and had to work hard to hide her displeasure at my touch, but it was there. She didn’t like me. She was okay before, but something had changed, I just didn’t know what.
“Ugh, yeah. Sure, Mia. I’d let you know. Have a safe trip,” Jackie said as she put her cigarette out on the bottom of her shoe and wrapped it in a napkin she produced from her pocket before turning to go back inside.
That was fun. Watching Jackie squirm was unexpectedly entertaining. Now I just needed to figure out what her deal was and why she all of a sudden didn’t like me. First, I needed to make a quick stop off at the office to talk to Matt.
After everything that had gone on, it appeared that everyone in the Cross Financial building knew my name now. More people said hello to me than ever before. They told me to wish Emma luck on a speedy recovery and were also apologetic for my recent ‘family issues.’ I guess word travels fast. It was nice to be supported, but I couldn’t help but feel that ninety percent of the people were fake about their concerns. Most of them I had seen virtually every day, and they’d never said one word to me before. Now that I was linked to the boss, everyone wanted to be gracious toward me. I was too polite to say anything, though. I told myself it’s just the nature of the corporate ass-kissing environment.
I stepped off of the elevator and was immediately greeted by Jamie.
“Miss. Blackburn, good afternoon. We weren’t expecting you in the office today. Is everything okay with Miss. Cross? I heard about the accident. It’s so tragic.”
“Hey Jamie. Yeah, what happened was terrible. The pilots, Jack and Anna, were burned pretty badly, but I heard that they’re in stable condition now, which is great news. Emma had surgery this morning for her broken leg, but she’ll be okay, thank goodness. We’re fortunate that no one died. Thanks for your concern, it means a lot. I’m just here to talk to Matt for a few minutes about some client issues. I’ll be in and out,” I replied with a kind smile.
Jamie casually flipped her fiery red hair behind her shoulders before standing in front of me and grabbing my hand softly. “If you need anything, and I mean anything at all, Miss. Blackburn, please don’t hesitate to ask. I’m just a phone call or an email away if you need me, and you know where I work,” she giggled playfully.
Was she flirting with me?
I squeezed her hand in kind and pulled away. “I appreciate that, thank you, Jamie. I’ll keep you in mind,” I replied awkwardly before turning to walk away. “Have a good rest of the day.”
“You too, Miss. Blackburn,” Jamie said with a breathy tone as she straightened her skirt and watched
me walk away.
I felt her eyes on me the entire walk down the hallway. She was definitely flirting with me.
Was there something in the air, or was it a full moon? People were acting really bizarre today.
I made it to my office with no further unusual interactions, and Matt’s smiling face was more than a welcome sight.
“Hello, Matthew. How’s the money of our rich and famous clientele doing on this odd Friday afternoon?”
“Hey, Mia. I’ surprised to see you. Is everything okay with Emma?”
“Yeah, everything’s fine. She’s at home now resting, but I wanted to talk to you about a few things.” I shut the office door behind me. “Stuff I didn’t want to talk about over the phone... just in case.”
“Agh, I gotcha. I do have to say, you look mighty comfortable in jeans and a sweatshirt. You do know everyone can tell you’re not wearing a bra, right?”
I instinctively crossed my arms over my chest. “Shit. Is it that obvious? I didn’t have a lot of time to get ready this morning thanks to someone’s antics... I wonder who that could’ve been?” I glared at Matt.
“Sorry, Mia. I might like dudes, but you in that sweatshirt with no bra is kinda hot,” Matt laughed.
“Don’t make me call HR on you too. Speaking of, Jamie just hit on me. Like hard.”
“Oh, no. Stay away from her. She’s nothing but trouble. That chick is so deep in bed with The Company I’m surprised she doesn’t have to pull mattress springs out of her ass to walk around pretending to fit in with the rest of us.”
“Really? I had my suspicions about her before, so thanks for clearing that up. That’s kind of why I’m here. I’ve got a name for you to look into, David Davies. He works at Dr. Jenkins’ Surgical Center. Can you find out if he’s with The Company too?”
“Sure. Is there any specific reason why I’m looking into this guy?” Matt asked.
“Not particularly. Dave was friendly, and he’s a medical professional. It’s always good to have a friend in that field around when you’re living in the screwed up world we find ourselves in currently,” I said sarcastically.
