“I saw your staffs when we moved,” he commented, finishing up the initial drawing. “That is what you have right now, so we’ll add the tip right there. How do you want it to work?”

“I was thinking a button that unlocks the shaft,” Katie explained. “From there it’s manual, as in I have to twist the shaft. Once twisted, it should lock into place. I was thinking something like eighteen-inch dirks coming out either from the sides to allow a slicing motion or one that springs from the tip that can be used to stab. Either way is fine.”

“Okay.” Joshua nodded as he drew the end of the staff. “Like that?”

“Yes.” Katie smiled. “Just don’t make it so narrow that they break off. Demon skin is thick and hard, so I don’t want it to be a one-and-done kind of thing.”

“Right, so it needs to be thick, and it needs to be reinforced in some way,” he repeated, making notes. “I think I can come up with something relatively quickly. It’ll just take me a little bit of time to forge the dirk.”

“Sweet.” Katie smiled. “You are doing an amazing job. I just want you to know that.”

“Thanks.” He blushed. “But I’m not on my own. I have a whole lot of help.”

“I think that is true across the board.” Katie chuckled. “We all have a lot of help in one way or another, but we are family and we do things together. If you need anything, just let me know.”

“I appreciate it.” As she headed toward the door he lowered his voice. “More than you know.”

Derek walked out of the elevator into the bright sun, putting his hands on his hips and looking around. He squinted to stare at the sands in the distance. He wanted to do something—relax, have a good time—but he had no idea what that something was.

He didn’t feel like driving to the Strip or dealing with all those people, but out here in the middle of nowhere his options were limited.

He headed over to the makeshift garage Korbin had set up.

The concrete base was new, and they had erected a large tent over it to shield the vehicles from the sand. Derek went in and stared at Katie’s truck, admiring its sleek lines and ability to handle almost anything. The SUVs were great for transport, but that baby looked like she was built for fun.

“She’s pretty sweet, isn’t she?” Katie offered as she came up behind Derek.

“Yeah.” He laughed. “Have you taken her out? You know, really given her a proper test drive?”

“Nope.” Katie shrugged and tossed him the keys. “Now is as good a time as any.”

“Really?” he exclaimed, looking at the keys in his hands.

She opened the passenger door. “Yep, but you break her, you fix her.”

“Deal,” he agreed, climbing hastily into the driver’s seat before she came to her senses.

He buckled his seatbelt and started the engine, rubbing his hands on the steering wheel once she started purring. He looked at Katie and smiled as he grabbed the shifter.

  “You ready?”

“Hell, yeah.” Katie waved him forward. “Let’s open this baby up!”

Derek tore down the road and out the main gate. As soon as he had gone far enough, he exited the road by taking a sharp right into the sand.

They flew through the desert, jumping washes, doing donuts, and laughing. He gunned it in an open area, grabbing the emergency brake and slamming on the brake pedal, whirling the car in a three-sixty and coming to a stop. Katie laughed madly as she swayed back and forth, holding onto the overhead grip.

“Okay,” she said, unbuckling. “My turn.”

  Oh shit.

Shut up, Pandora. I haven’t killed us yet.

“Yet” is the operative word here, honey.

They switched spots and took off again, exploring every part of the land around them. From a distance, you could tell exactly where they were by the dust plumes in the air.

Katie realized that she had been born to off-road in the Raptor; it just felt so right and so natural to her. She could take whatever turns she wanted and go as fast as she wanted, and when she let go of fear she had a fantastically good time.

She slowed the truck down as they approached the rocky and mountainous terrain on the back end of the massive property.

Stephanie had finally come clean on just how many acres she owned, and Katie felt like it was a damned state.

It wasn’t, but that many zeroes should equal a state-sized chunk of land.

Katie shifted into four-wheel low and slowly began to climb the mountain, smiling in excitement as Derek stared at the scenery. When they finally reached a point where the mountain became too steep she stopped and parked, and they climbed a little farther to sit on a flat area cut into the mountain.

It would be perfect for sitting or lying down to watch the stars.

“Wow.” she gasped as the sun dipped beyond the horizon.

The sky was orange and the clouds that had gathered right at the horizon glistened in beautiful yellows and pinks. It was a really nice moment; something she hadn’t yet shared with anyone from the team.

Derek sighed and leaned back on his hands, closing his eyes and enjoying the cool breeze.

“I could definitely get used to living here.” He smiled. “I’ve got my family, my computers, and a hell of a beautiful view. I don’t think I could ask for much more.”

“Maybe a pizza place that delivered out here.” Katie giggled. “I’m starving.”

“It’s getting dark anyway.” Derek smiled as he got up and swatted off the dust. “Come on, let’s gun it back. There isn’t anything out here that can hurt us.”

“Except demons and wolves.” Katie shrugged. “But fuck them.”

Derek laughed heartily as they climbed back into the truck. Katie took the helm, and they slowly crept back down the mountain, not wanting to slip or flip the vehicle.

When they reached the bottom they went balls out. Katie slammed her foot on the gas, spinning the tires before diving into the sandbox in front of them. She laughed and cheered as they sped through the desert, her window down and her arm out to feel the wind blow past.

“It’s getting dark,” she yelled over the wind.

Pandora laughed. You don’t need lights.

Suddenly Katie’s eyes sparkled brightly, and she could see in the dark. It was like wearing night vision, only everything had a red tint—and she could see perfectly.

Derek looked at her and laughed, shaking his head.

“You’ve got the coolest demon. She like installs toys in your body,” he commented. “Night-vision Katie. Maybe I can con my demon into x-ray vision.”

“Pervert.” Katie pulled hard to the right to avoid a large rock.

Katie gunned it and hit a slope, going airborne for a moment before landing and throwing sand behind them. The wheels caught, and they took off, swerving back and forth watching as the front gate came into view. She slowed the truck just a bit and took the turn through the gate at high speed, tilting the truck almost on two wheels. Derek clung to the oh-shit handle as they leveled out, causing Katie to erupt in laughter.

“How did he die?” Derek said. “Oh, he went four-wheeling with a demon and ended up inside a giant ball of metal.”

“Ha! That was what that last demon said.” Katie laughed, thinking about the Ferrari.

They sped up the driveway, slowing down only to pull into the garage. She put the truck in park and turned off the engine, leaning her head back as she continued to laugh. When the giggling simmered down, she turned her head and looked at Derek. He looked more alive than she had ever seen him before.

  “This was fun.” She grinned.

“Hell, yeah it was.” He nodded vigorously. “I was seriously expecting us to crash any second. I pictured taking one of those peaks and just rolling end over end through the sand.”

“That would have been a shame.” Katie paused for a moment. “I think I would stop buying cars if that had happened.”

They sat there for a minute looking out the front wi
ndow before both turning and speaking in unison.

  “Yeah right!”

Derek pointed to her. “Seriously, I can see you owning like fifteen cars during your reign as Damned Queen.”

  “Damned what?”

“Oh, that’s just what we call you: the Damned Queen.” Derek smiled. “You can kick anyone and anything’s ass.”

“Not anything.” She sighed and opened the car door.

“One day it will be anything.” Derek stood on the running board and looked over the truck bed at her. “You will get there. Just you watch and see.”

“And when I do, we will all be out of a job.” Katie closed the door.

“Nah. As long as there is a Satan we will have a job,” he assured her as they walked toward the building.

  Lucifer.

“Then I guess I have bigger fish to fry.”

“That would be the ultimate bad-guy showdown.” He chuckled and mimicked putting a microphone up to his mouth. “Katie versus Lucifer, LIVE at Wrigley Field!”

  “Wrigley?” she laughed.

“I don’t know. It was the first thing that came to mind. I like baseball,” he admitted.

They walked into the building and took the elevator down to the passages below. As they stepped off, Katie looked toward Korbin’s office.

“See you later tonight for soaps?” Derek asked.

“You got it, dude.” Katie waved. “I’m gonna just go talk to Korbin for a few. I’ll meet you up there.”

“Perfect,” he said as he walked away.

“Hey there.” Korbin looked up as he filed the last of his paperwork. “What can I do for you, Katie?”

“I was wondering something,” she replied, strolling in and examining his new digs. “I was wondering if I could speak to the general?”

“Uh, why?” Korbin asked, frowning. “You changing teams?”

“God, no.” Katie shook her head vehemently. “I just think that he is a good enough man to owe me a favor, after what we did the last time we worked with him. I’d like to get ahead of him on some things. Plus, I’m going to give him a hundred rounds of the new 9mm bullets Joshua made.”

“Katie, I don’t think—” Korbin started, but she put up a hand.

“No, you aren’t thinking. I need to be proactive. You guys are all strutting around like peacocks trying to show each other up. It’s a dick-measuring contest, and I don’t want to be part of that. I think he needs something from our side, and if I offer it he is less likely to just take it.”

“Ugh,” Korbin replied, rubbing his face. “You sure you want to get mixed up in the politics?”

“Hell no, but it’s what’s best.” Katie shrugged.

“All right.” He sighed. “I mean, it’s your company, boss. But I’m warning you now: you need to be careful. These guys don’t give two shits; they will screw us in a heartbeat.”

“I hear you, and appreciate the warning.” Katie stood up. “Thanks, Boss Number Two.”

Korbin scowled as Katie giggled and left the room.

  Chapter Fifteen

Katie felt good after her conversation with Korbin.

She might be able to step in and create a more peaceful relationship between the mercenaries and the military. She didn’t want the mercs and military to work together at the moment—that had been a disaster—but Katie wanted to keep the peace so she could keep her business intact.

Katie’s mother had always told her to keep her friends close and her enemies closer. They weren’t necessarily the enemy, but they could easily become one very fast.

She went into her room and turned on the shower to warm up, then stripped down and hopped in.

The new showers had huge shower heads, creating a waterfall effect. It was so much better than the old ones, which had barely sprayed consistently in one direction.

She was just glad to not have to clean up puddles after showering; the doors definitely helped. As she stood there washing her hair and looking at her loofa, she realized something.

  Uh, Pandora, Katie began.

Yes, my dear? she replied sarcastically.

I don’t think I’ve had to shave in about four months. Like the razor still has the plastic guard on it.

I know, she chirped. I figured it was one of those things you really didn’t need to waste your time on, so I stopped the growth.

  Even, um, down there?

Especially down there, Pandora grumbled. This is not a garden, no matter what people say. We are not just going to just let it grow. I spent too many centuries in a world with razors that could slice your hee-haw off. We are not dealing with the jungle. Drapes alone are fine. No carpet required.

Okay, okay! Katie put up her hands. Just asking. I mean, I don’t mind. Women pay thousands of dollars for treatments to stop hair growth. I got mine for the small price of sharing my body with a demon.

See? Pandora retorted. Always look on the bright side of life.

Katie laughed and finished up, stepping out and drying herself off.

She pulled on some sweatpants and a tank top and brushed her wet hair before throwing it into a messy bun. She wandered out to the kitchen and made her special sugary popcorn, this time in orange, then grabbed a bottle of water and headed to the family room. Eric, Derek, Stephanie, and Calvin were already there, waiting to turn on the new hundred and ten-inch flat screen television Korbin had surprised the group with. Derek had taken the time to hook up some badass speakers and wired them around the room to create almost a movie theatre setting, only with a comfortable couch and big comfy armchairs.

“All right, crew, are we ready?” Derek asked, clicking on the television and looking at everyone.

Calvin pointed to the screen. “Make it so, Number One,” he intoned.

They all sat back as the soaps began, humming along to the intro. As they watched they cracked jokes, their laughter a familiar and warm sound in the space.

Katie was starting to think she liked the time with her team more than she liked the soaps themselves. Of course, Pandora would argue that any day of the week. Just as the second scene came on her phone buzzed in her pocket. Katie pulled it out and smiled at Ella’s name on the screen.

Dude, are you watching the soap? Ella texted.

Yeah, we are all here watching, Katie replied.

Holy shit, did you see what Eddie did to Veronika?

Stop! Stop right there, Katie texted. NO SPOILERS! We are just now watching it!

Okay, okay, Ella texted. I’m rewinding so I can watch with you.

She stared at the screen as Eddie, one of the main characters, turned to Veronika and smiled, holding a knife behind his back. Everyone slid to the edges of their seats as they waited to see what would happen. As Eddie brushed his hand across Veronika’s sweet pink cheek, he jabbed the knife into her stomach. Tears fell from Veronika’s eyes as she looked longingly at Eddie.

  “I…just…wanted…to love you,” Veronika sputtered.

HOLY SHIT! Katie texted to Ella. He stabbed the bitch!

I KNOW!! Ella texted back. Like, holy shit is right. That bitch was crazy though, all “oh but I love you, Eddie.” Please! I would have kicked his ass.

Slow down, Katie texted back, laughing. But you’re right, he deserves an ass-kicking. And he is fucking crying! Why is he crying?

Right?! If you wanted to keep her, you shouldn’t have stabbed her, Ella replied with an angry-face emoji.

Boys are dumb, Katie wrote back.

  That they are, Ella responded.

The story continued, and everyone waited with bated breath as Veronika was carried, almost dead, into the void. The show ended there, but they had several more episodes to go. Derek shook his head and put his hands in the air.

“Ten bucks says she comes back to life as some wild and crazy bitch and slaughters everyone,” Derek offered.

“No way.” Stephanie snorted. “That bitch is going to be stupid and fix Eddie’s problems and come back to him like, ‘Oh, I understand tha
t the aliens wanted you to kill me. It’s okay, I forgive you.’ Bitch, please! He stabbed your ass.”

“Fucking white people,” Calvin replied shaking his head. “The Queen Bitch would have whupped his ass and sent him back to the aliens with his balls around his damn neck. Then she would have taken his Mercedes and lived a nice comfortable life in the hills.”

Katie laughed as the next episode started. Stephanie shushed everyone, and Eric plopped down on one side of the couch, then moved in for a closer view. He snatched some orange popcorn from the bowl and smiled at Katie.

“Be careful with that.” Stephanie chuckled. “That demon is likely to snatch your hand right off your arm.”

  Damned right, Pandora grumbled.

A flash of light sparked, sending energy surging across the small Arizona town. Moloch growled as he swung open the cast iron gate to hell and stepped out into the moonlight.

He looked down at the dusty town below, grimacing at the thought of being there any longer than he had to. Humans were ignorant. They loved the dusty hot wasteland of the West, but hated the idea of the dusty wastelands of hell. At least in hell he could torture whoever he wanted. Here he had to keep a low profile until it was time.

Moloch was there to talk to the survivalist group, to continue his plan to help T’Chezz take over Earth. He had gone through its members, picking out six men who would fit the bill for his team. The rest would be servants, making sure things went as planned and sacrificing themselves to the bigger picture if necessary.

The men he chose were all strong, stout humans, already physically capable and open to allowing their demon to take control.

All they were waiting on were the actual demons.

Moloch had taken care to choose demons who would create maximum havoc, provide the highest possibility of success, and didn’t take shit from anyone. They had volunteered—under strenuous pressure from Moloch—and had traveled inside him to Earth.

They would meet their new capsules very soon, and when they did training would commence. Moloch opened the door to the house where the cult lived, watching as everyone stood at attention. The six men nodded and followed Moloch back to the spell room. Lit candles surrounded the space, casting flickering ominous shadows against the walls.
