Remember the Alamo (Legacy Book 1) Page 20

by Rain Carrington

Not wanting to seem overly happy about the exact thing he’d been thinking about, Mac simply smiled.

Leo saw and added, “I want that, you know? Married, kids, with you.”

Mac rolled over the top of him, grinning. “Ya mean it?”

“Yeah. I even got us a couple of rings, in case you said yes.”

  “Yer askin’?”

Leo rolled them again, so he could be on top and huffed, “Yeah! I’m asking!”

“Let me have a few months to think it over, make sure yer ready for it.”

Leo started tickling him until he gave in and said he would marry him, but before they could celebrate, Mac’s phone went off.

“Shit fire and save matches, what the fuck?” He picked up his phone and saw a number from New Mexico. “Shit.”

  “Who is it?”

“New Mexico only means one thing. My cousins.” Leo watched as he answered, “Hello? McCully Blaylock here.”

“I need to find Daniel. You his boy?”

It was the voice of someone he truly detested. “Uncle Gabe, how’re you?”

“Let me talk to your daddy.”

“Uncle Gabe, now, I’m sorry ta tell ya, but daddy died ‘bout six months ago.”

The man on the other side of the call huffed, but finally said, “That’s a shame. Hopefully, at the last, he found his way to our Heavenly Father.”

Mac rolled his eyes while Leo watched him, laughing. “I don’t know ‘bout that, sir, but is there somethin’ I can do for ya?”

“Yes. If your cousin, Matthew, calls and wants your help, don’t give it to him. Not if you want to keep righteous with your father in Heaven.”

Sitting up and taking the call more seriously, he asked, “What does he need help with? What happened?”

“It’s a shame to us. We won’t mention it or his name ever again. Just be warned, boy, don’t help him if you want to stay right with God and value your skin. Sinners that help other sinners will be met with a wrath greater than the devil himself can give.”

With that, he ended the call and left Mac to stare at his screen. “What the Sam Hill?”

  “What happened?”

Mac set the phone on the bed and sighed, “We need to find my cousin, Matthew. Damn it all to hell.”

Leo turned his face and asked louder, “Who the hell are these people? I know all your line, Mac, and never saw Matthew or Gabe on it.”

“You wouldn’t. Not unless you were lookin’ at my mother’s line too. My grandfather on mama’s side, he had a brother named Edmond that took after their daddy. They’re Mormons, the old kind. Crazy shit, if ya ask me. Great granddaddy was one, but my granddaddy didn’t cotton to it. His brother, Edmond, though, did. He had seven or eight wives, Mama said. Her cousin, Gabe, he come from Edmond, and Matthew is his son from one o’ his wives. Don’t know which. Met ‘em back at a family reunion when I was a lot younger, oh, musta been fifteen years ago. Matthew was jus’ a kid, maybe seven. He was a sweet kid, real cute. I wonder what’s happenin’ with ‘im.”

It was Mac’s turn to watch Leo grab his phone and get on it. “Stacy? It’s Leo, girl, how are you? I may have a case for you. I’ve got my fiancé here, and he has a family member who may need some help, but we have to find him first, and you’re not charging him! You owe me.” Mac watched as Leo’s grin widened. “Great. I’ll get back to you with all the details.”

“Who was that?” Mac asked, after Leo let his phone drop to the bed.

“I have a friend who happens to be a terrific private investigator. Start writing down the information and I’ll pass it on to her.”

“Why? Leo…this ain’t your problem. You don’t always have to step in, ya know?”

“Yeah, I do, Mac. They’re my family too now. Even the crazy Mormons.”

Once again, Mac pushed him down on the bed and smothered him with kisses and laughter. “I sure do love ya.”

“I sure do love ya too, cowboy.”

  The End
