Family Ties Page 8

Still, Jimmy and I were our own people; we could make our own decisions. My decision was…I needed to break out of the net and show Mrs. Pam Chaser and the other two vampire hunters with her, that vampires weren’t to be feared. Well, not unless you made us angry.

Right now, I was pretty darn angry!

  Chapter 13: Superpowers in Action

“What’s going on here?” I demanded from under the net, not sure if this was an elaborate trap to get me, or if Pam Chaser had other motives for coming here.

Bonnie pointed at the net. “That net is coated with a sleeping agent that should have put her to sleep.”

  “So impressive,” Bo said.

Rowf tapped me with his paw. “Ah, Nina, I can’t help wondering where your mom, dad, and the others are. Surely, you sent them our location. Right?” From the sound of his voice, I figured Rowf had figured out that I hadn’t done that yet.

I sighed. “I kind of wanted to be the hero and save Pam on my own. So I could impress her…”

“And how’s that working out for you?” Rowf asked.

“Okay, I’ve just sent a mental message to my mom. She and the others will be here soon,” I told Rowf.

“Good,” Rowf replied. “I understand what you were trying to do but vampire hunters, especially those living here in the heart of vampire country, can be tricky.”

“Yeah, I’ve now figured that out,” I said. “And I’ve heard from Mom in my head. They will be here soon.” I turned my attention back to the three vampire hunters.

“See, I told you that when I went missing in action, Miss Elena would panic and send this one,” Pam said to Bo and Bonnie. “Her entire family will also be on the way. Soon you will have captured two of the most powerful vampires around!” she scoffed proudly.

Bonnie waved her hand in front of Pam’s face. “Good, you may sleep again.” Pam dropped back in her chair sound asleep.

“Wait, what the heck’s going on here?” I demanded.

Bonnie turned to me. “Pam reached out to me over Skype. She wanted to talk and share information. You know…vampire hunter to vampire hunter. So, I hypnotized her to get her to come here. I even made her think it was her idea. I don’t like her working for that other agency. She’s a vampire hunter; she belongs with us. And once Bo and I capture the two vampires who are the biggest threat to humans, she will see that. Not only that, but other’s will flock to our ranks. To tell the truth, they are scared of you and your mother. But now we will show them they have nothing to be scared of. Especially when you leave here without powers…”

Bo turned to Bonnie. “Ah, do you think it’s such a hot idea to tell the girl your plan. Why do we bad guys always do that?”

Bonnie laughed. “We’re not the bad guys. We’re the only ones who see the true bad guys for what they are!” she insisted. She pointed to a cabinet in the corner of the room. “Now, go bring me the spray of the purple belladonna!’

“Wait, the purple belladonna has been extinct for hundreds of years!” Rowf said.

“Not totally, the agency Pammy here works for, had some in cold storage, and we needed it to make the spray. Funny…they had the ingredient, and we had the recipe. Once we depower the two super vampires, the other vampires will fall and become mere humans too!” Bonnie said.

“Well now, this all makes sense,” Rowf said.

I needed to get out of the net and fast. Yeah, there were times when I wondered what it would be like to be a normal human. But then I realized, being a vampire weretiger is what I am. Sure, it makes me different from everybody else, but everybody is different from everybody else. Difference is what makes the world fun and interesting. Plus, we make the world a better place as we learn to communicate with people who are different from us. We look for common ground.

Bo handed the spray canister to Bonnie. “Will it work on her weretiger side too?” he asked.

Bonnie nodded. “It will… I refined it. See? I told you, getting a Ph.D. in microbiology would come in handy!” she said.

Bonnie slowly walked toward me. She savored each step. She held up the spray can. “Be prepared to become normal!” she told me.

“Look, Bonnie, you don’t want to do this!” I said, using my hypnotic voice.

Bonnie laughed. She pointed to her ears. “Sorry kid, I’m wearing earplugs that filter out vampire’s hypnotic voices. The earplugs are standard issue here!” She laughed again.

Alright now, plan A didn't work. Luckily I had a plan B. Not a very high tech or a very cunning plan, but desperate times called for desperate moves. I took a deep breath and held it. I needed to time this perfectly. I held it in as Bonnie walked closer. She lifted the canister. She placed her finger on the spray knob. She walked closer to me, so close I could almost feel her breath, which was what I wanted. The split second that she pressed down on the button, I exhaled towards her, using as much vampire and weretiger strength as possible. My breath and the spray collided, sending the spray back to Bonnie.

Bonnie coughed and dropped the spray can. Her eyes started to water. She dropped to her knees. She looked up at me. “Silly vampire, your breath stinks!”

“Sorry, normally I pop a breath mint or two before going into battle!” I said.

  “Really?” Rowf asked.

  “Nah, just delaying…” I replied.

Bonnie forced herself to her feet. She quivered but stayed standing. “The spray of the purple belladonna does not affect normal humans,” she told me. “You just delayed things for a second or two.”

“Yeah, but that’s all I needed,” I told her.

“Why?” she asked. “I’m not going to fall for the old blow the spray back in my face thing again.”

“Well, I can keep this up all day,” I said proudly. “But luckily I won’t have to!”

“What makes you so confident?” Bonnie asked, still waiting for the tears to clear from her eyes.

Bo moved alongside her. “Honey, I think we should get out of here!” he said. “And fast. Really fast.”

  “Why?” Bonnie asked.

Mom zoomed into the room at super speed. She leaped over the netted Rowf and me. She knocked the canister out of Bonnie’s hand. She grabbed Bonnie and Bo and pinned them both to the floor.

  “I’m why!” Mom said.

Nina Note: There are times when having a mom who is a super vampire is a bit of a pain in the butt. This was not one of them. This time, I felt extremely glad that my mom was so powerful. Plus, being able to think thoughts to each other came in handier than texting.

  Chapter 14: The Request

As Mom took care of Bonnie and Bo Clyde; Dad, Sasha, and Frank pulled the net off Rowf, and I. Jimmy went over to his still sleeping mom.

“Your mom filled me in on what happened,” Jimmy told me. “I’m way sorry about that!”

Dad, Frank, and Sasha freed us from the net. I walked over to Jimmy. “I don’t think your mom knew about the purple belladonna,” I reassured him. “I do believe she just meant this as a test for me and my mom, to show the others how powerful we are.”

“It’s still not right!” Jimmy said.

“No, it’s not,” Rowf agreed. “But it’s human nature to be afraid of something you don’t completely understand.”

Rowf blew some dog breath onto Pam.

Pam started to cough. Her eyes popped open. She sniffed the air. “Yuck, dog breath.”

“Sorry, had to wake you up,” Rowf said. “So you could see the mess you caused!”

Pam sniffed the air again. “Do I smell belladonna?” she asked.

“Purple belladonna!” Dad said, his arms crossed.

Pam popped up to her feet. “Look, Doctor Thorn…you have to believe me! I had no idea they were going to do this. I really thought I was on a fact-finding sort of show and tell mission.”

“So, you just happened to bring them the purple belladonna,” Dad said, as mad as I had ever seen him.

“Yes, you have to believe me. I didn’t even know Ms. E
lena was keeping some. Though, I guess I should have known. That woman plans for all contingencies…”

Sasha nodded. “That does sound like my mom.”

Mom walked over to us. “I read Bo and Bonnie’s minds before I erased them,” she said, looking at each of us. “They used Pam. Bonnie was the mastermind who set this entire thing up. Being a vampire hunter here in Transylvania, she felt outnumbered. She got desperate.”

“What’s going to happen to them now?” Frank asked. “I don’t like people netting my sister and Rowf.” Frank pointed at Bo and Bonnie who were now sitting in the corner playing patty-cake with each other. “But I don’t think it’s a nice thing to make them think they are little kids forever.”

Mom laughed. “Yeah, it is fun though.”

Dad finally started to calm down. “Honey, you’re not going to leave them like that. Right? After all, now I can keep the purple belladonna in my lab where it will be nice and safe.”

Sasha frowned. “I’m not sure my mom will like that.”

Dad smiled at her, showing her his fangs. “She can come and discuss it with me, scientist to scientist, whenever she likes,” he told Sasha.

  Sasha simply nodded.

Frank pointed to Bo and Bonnie, who were now playing duck, duck goose. “You can’t leave them like that. Duck, duck goose doesn’t work with just two people. That’s pretty much just two-person tag…”

Mom grinned. “Don’t worry. I made them forget they’re vampire hunters. From now on, they’ll believe they are simple pizza makers.”

“They do make great pizza!” Rowf said.

“Good, so everybody wins!” Frank said. “Can we go back home now? Jimmy and I have a baseball game tomorrow. It would be great if we could be there for the team.”

“I’ve texted my mom,” Sasha said. “She said the plane is at the airport waiting for us. She also wants you to know that she’s sorry about the purple belladonna. She kept it under lock and key to be used only in an extreme emergency. She never wanted to harm you, people. She had no idea it was missing.”

Dad looked at Sasha. “Tell her we understand, but we’re keeping it anyway.”

Sasha typed something on her phone. She looked at her phone. “Mom says she understands and she wants to thank you for bringing back her top agent.”

“If I were a top agent, I wouldn’t have been so easily hypnotized,” Pam said. She walked up to Mom and I. “I know we may never be close. But I appreciate that you came and fought to free me. I am sorry about dragging you here. I should have been stronger and resisted Bonnie’s hypnosis.”

Mom put her arm around Pam. “That’s okay; you’re only human.”

“I have a question for Pam and Jimmy,” Rowf said. “I’ve been looking for a change of scenery…I mean, this country is beautiful, but I’ve always wanted to visit the USA.”

  “Okay,” Pam said.

“Can I come and stay with you for a while? You live close to the Thorns so I can still see them, but with me around I can also help make sure no other vampire hunters from around the world try to do the same thing that Bonnie did.”

“I’ve always wanted a dog!” Jimmy said. “Especially a talking one!”

“I won’t talk in public,” Rowf promised.

Jimmy bent down and hugged Rowf. “He’s very cute! How can we say no?”

Pam pointed to Rowf’s wings. “Ah, the wings kind of make him stand out…”

Rowf curled the wings under his fur. “I can hide them!” he said and gave Pam an irresistible smile.

  “Please, Mom! Please!” Jimmy begged.

“Sure. Why not!” his mom replied.

“Yes!” Jimmy said, his voice loud with excitement. He and Frank gave each other high fives.

“Nice job,” I heard Rowf say in my head. “You did good.”

“Thanks!” I thought back to him. “It will be nice to have you around.”

“Yes it will,” he said to me. “I want to be nearby to help, when whatever is coming, comes.”

“Do you have any idea what it is?” I asked.

“Nope, but I know your family, The Chasers and I can handle it!” Rowf said.

I smiled, knowing he was right!
