First Priority Page 17

I stretched across the console and stole a kiss just as the light turned green and the cars behind us honked. “I want. Oh, and Truman? You’re my first priority, too.”

Truman smiled, hit the gas, and we drove off into our future.

  Truman

  Two years later

It was my birthday (never mind how old I am), and we were celebrating with a long vacation at the cottage. Adam was happy to sit in a booth at the pub with Jay and Riley while Brian and Daniel and I worked the room and talked to visitors. Silvester sat by his side, as loyal as ever. He and I had made a truce after the second pair of boots he’d destroyed. I kept him in treats and chew toys, and he left them alone.

“Hey, mate. How’s it feel to be—”

“Ah,” I said, “no numbers. I’m an actor, remember? We lie about our age.”

Brian laughed. “If you say so. When are you going to ask that sweet man to marry you?”

I cut my eyes to Brian as we leaned against the bar. “What are you, a mind reader?”

“Nah, but I reckon you’ve been twitchy all day and fingering something in your pocket, and I don’t think it’s your prick.”

“Nice, Bri. Thanks.” I took a swig of beer. “I’m doing it at home tonight. He’d kill me if I tried it in front of all these people.”

“That he would.” He slapped me on the back. “Well, I wish you luck. Come to the house in a few days, and I’ll make you both my famous pot roast to celebrate.”

  “We will. Thanks.”

“Truman! Congratulations on the second nomination!” Maggie came over with little Truman in tow. “You were marvelous as Moriarty. Best villain I’ve seen in a long time. And I’m not just yanking your chain.”

“Thank you, Mags.” I leaned in to kiss her cheek and ruffled Truman’s hair. Little Truman had his arms in the air. I lifted him up and settled him on my hip. “Hey, little me.” I kissed his cheek, and he squirmed, so I let him down. He was off like a shot.

Maggie sighed and shook her head. “I said he could have ice cream if he did that.”

  I chuckled. “Good one.”

I glanced over and saw Adam’s eyes on me, and I gave him a wink. He stood and came to put his arms around me. I kissed him and together, we watched our friends and family in companionable silence. It hadn’t all been sunshine and roses. We’d had fights, mostly about me doing things that Adam wanted to do himself. I’d had lots of talks with Deborah, and she’d told me that my alpha male tendencies weren’t necessarily good for Adam’s growth. He’d come a long way, though. And so had I. Because of him.

Adam put his hand in the back pocket of my jeans and squeezed. “You ready to go get your birthday present?”

  “Hell, yes.”

We made the rounds, saying good-bye, and took the boat to the island. It was as beautiful as ever. The light began to dim, and the orange beams bounced off the water and lit Adam in a fiery glow.

We docked and tied the boat, and Silvester jumped out and ran to his favorite spot. Adam and I walked to the house together. I wasn’t nervous about tonight. Adam often said how we were already married in spirit, so this was a formality, but it was one I wanted.

Before we entered the house, I steered Adam to his favorite spot.

“You remember when I told you, you’re my first priority?”

Adam smiled and nodded. “Of course.”

  “Well, I was wrong.”

His head came up fast, ready to be devastated. I kissed him soundly on the lips.

“You’re my only priority. You and nothing else.”

Tears sprang to his eyes, and he didn’t stop them from falling as I lowered to one knee and held up a simple silver ring.

“Adam Hendrix, will you marry me?”

Adam laughed. “Of course I will, Truman James. I love you. And I love James McCamish, and anyone else you choose to be.”

I swallowed hard, then grinned and slid the ring on his finger before kissing it. Adam kneeled to kiss me.

We sat and watched the sun go to bed, and finally made it into the house. We made love into the wee hours of the morning, and I held him in my arms with a sappy smile and a happy heart.

  The End.
