“Yes?”

  “Under no circumstances are you going to teach them how to steal pocket watches.”

  She gave him her very best innocent stare. “But, Ethan, you said yourself the future is uncertain. Our children should have some extra skills to fall back on.”

  He frowned at her, and she could tell he was doing his best to look stern. “Pickpocketing is not a skill I want my children to learn. I’d prefer them to take up a worthy trade.”

  “Oh, very well,” she conceded. “I won’t teach them pickpocketing. After all,” she added with her usual optimism, “I can always teach them forgery instead. Or lock picking. Or everything their father taught me about how to be a spy.”

  Ethan groaned, and this time it was his turn to silence her with a kiss.
