Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained Page 2

by Brennen Tammons

Peter is the Operations manager of the “Sunset Credit Union”. He is basically in charge of the bank, and acts as an administrator to all the daily duties of the bank. He also is the one that hires, and hired all of the employees that are currently working in the bank. He has been working in the bank the longest, and has the most experience and knowledge of the bank. Peter’s main tasks are to make sure the bank is running as smoothly as it can, although he does hold other tasks and job duties that he performs as well. Peter is looking to hire another bank manager/assistant operations manager. This is because the past manager who held this position, moved onto another bank, and he has to replace him. Peter has interviewed a handful of prospects, but he hasn’t been satisfied at all with the potential candidates for some reason. Russell would be the sixth man that he would be interviewing to hire onto this position.

Russell who is feeling very nervous and anxious from meeting Peter, is although enjoying Peter’s company and liking his attitude upon greeting him. Russell took a seat behind Peter’s desk. Peter began to interview Russell for the position. Asking him several questions.

“Russell, it’s great to finally meet you. I know I spoke to you over the phone a couple days ago, and thanks for coming by. This resume is very nice…., so I must ask, how was it at First National?”. Russell replied, still feeling anxious.

“I loved it, I learned a lot about the banking and financial business, there wasn’t a single day that I didn’t like. Dealing with computers and technology and records and bookkeeping, and dealing with other objectives I had to complete. Working in a bank is very high profile, and I took what I knew about that particular branch, learned specifics and tricks to make things more efficient. Dealing with customer payments and solving issues they had. I enjoyed my time at that bank, I really did.”

Peter who seemed satisfied with that response asked Russell another question.

“So, why aren’t you at First National anymore?”.

Russell began to feel even more anxious, as he had several different answers in his head. He was debating as to whether or not to make himself look good and fib, and say in some shape or form that the company was laying off employee’s hours and wages, or to just tell the truth and say that he wasn’t happy with how he was being treated at the company, and how the bank was treating other customers. Russell very anxiously replied,

“Well, I just decided that logistically I felt I was being overshadowed, and I wasn’t as important as I once was. It was becoming an issue as we were understaffed at times, and it was getting very hectic. Many people were coming and going, and…,” Russell stopped himself, looked towards the ground and hesitated for a few seconds. He then continued.

“I’m sorry, I’m not going to lie. I had some issues with management, and I felt they were, please excuse my language, doing some very shady shit, and I wanted nothing to do with that. I noticed a pattern that everyone was getting the hell out of there rather quickly. So I decided to follow suit. No disrespect to them at all. Again, I loved working there, and I learned so much. Above all of that, I was hard working and gave my all to that company. But to be honest, I felt that wasn’t where I was supposed to be at all, and I decided to take my talents elsewhere.”

Russell felt very uneasy after that response, but was glad that he was truthful, hoping the benefit of that would reap success. Peter responded to Russell.

“You know what, I really appreciate your honesty man. You seem to not give a damn, and that’s a good quality for a man who wants to manage a bank to have. Really between you and me, I have like four other guys I’m considering, but to hell with that. I doubt they have what you have. You’re such a well put together young man. I’m really feeling you, and I would love to have you join us. I want you to start right now. That is if that’s alright with you, please say yes.”

Peter with a big smile on his face, put out his hand for Russell to shake and acknowledge.

Russell not expecting at all for Peter to be gratified for his rather blunt way of putting things, was shocked to see Peter’s acceptance towards his personality. Russell very briskly shakes Peter’s hand, and accepts his offer smiling,

“Well I don’t mean to brag, but I am the best. Come on now. Thank you so much sir, I appreciate it.”.

Peter under his breath calmly responds to Russell, while still shaking his hand.

“Don’t call me Sir, call me Pete, were partners now. It’s alright. Welcome to the team.”

Russell who has now been working for the bank for only three months, was then hired onto become an assistant operations manager, ergo just simply a bank manager. His duties included managing bank teller activities, solving customer complaints and issues, making sure security protocols are met, and to be an acting bank teller if customer flow is very active, be an acting financial advisor if need be, and to most importantly in relation to that, be an acting operations manager if the operations manager is not working.

Russell out of all the other employees became very close with Peter, and develops a close bond with him. Peter has been with the “Sunset Credit Union”, for many years. Originally transferring as a manager from another nearby bank before then. Russell’s relationship with Peter reaches out even further, as they mingle outside of work numerous times. Despite their wide age difference, with Russell being in his late twenties, and Peter being in his forties, they still seemed to orchestrate a very close and supportive friendship. Also minding the fact that Russell has only been an employee of this company for a few months, that doesn’t seem to matter. Peter has invited Russell to his house a couple times, and has introduced him to his family in addition to that. Russell who was sort of an introverted man himself, did not have any friends. He had close associates when he was in university that he later lost contact with. He began to confide in Peter quite closely. Peter was a very talented golfer, and Russell not quite being as skilled as him, still enjoyed to golf with Peter.

Russell temporarily snaps out of his daydreaming, and leaves from behind the bank counter, when he goes to assist an elderly African American woman departing the bank who drops her pocketbook from her purse onto the ground.

“Sweetheart, I believe you dropped this.”

The woman thanks him for alerting her on this, and she walks out of the bank. Immediately following that, a young woman with curly hair, wearing a T-shirt and blue jeans and sunglasses, who works at a restaurant around the corner, walks into the bank, and asks Russell if they are still open. He responds to her politely.

“Yes, you’re just in time, we are about to close, but you’re okay.”

Russell proceeds to go back to his work location, overlooking the bank. Aside from Peter the operations manager who is working, the other employees consist of two tellers. One of which is a twenty-five-year-old, attractive blonde haired Caucasian girl, named Jennifer Reynolds. Jennifer is a very beautiful woman, who is still trendy yet professional with her image. She has been hired as a bank teller at the “Sunset Credit Union”, for almost two years now. Before then, she took up various jobs as being a waitress. Being born and raised in Los Angeles, growing up in a typical nuclear upper middle class background. She has many siblings, three brothers and two sisters. Jennifer is the youngest. She lives with her parents not that far from the bank, and she is in school at, “California State University, Los Angeles” to become a school teacher. She recently decided to change her study to that, after she originally wanted to study fashion design. Jennifer is a very outgoing and bubbly woman, and she has a friendly spirit about her. Her relationship with the other coworkers is generally well liked. Due to her conflicting school and work schedule, she very rarely has much of a social life despite her exuberant personality, but she manages to still take control of her life in a positive way.

Jennifer is single and she does not have any children. She at this point is concerned about her career and her work, and is not concerned about love or relationships. Jennifer enjoys exercising and going to the gym frequent
ly. She has many friends who also work at the bank, and some that do not, that she usually associates with. Despite their wide age gap, Jennifer keeps a very professional relationship with Peter, as she is always respectable with him. She isn’t close friends with him outside of the bank, but she is very professional towards him.

Russell has a very conflicting relationship with Jennifer. They are cordial to each other, however they aren’t really that close. Russell thinks of her as a nice woman, but he isn’t that devoted or concerned to her that much at all. Jennifer also seems to not really show that much attention to Russell at all. Despite the fact Jennifer has associated with every other employee of the bank in some shape or form, she has never really developed any type of relationship with Russell outside of work. It seems to be a mutual feeling between them both, that they aren’t really interested in each other for whichever reason. Russell does respect Jennifer though, and really is happy to see her apart of the company. Jennifer seems to be safe around Russell, although they aren’t close on any personal levels.

The other bank teller is a twenty-eight-year-old African American man named Jesse Watkins. Jesse is a very slender, childish, flamboyant and eccentric, brown skinned man, with natural afro textured hair and full lips. He as a very loud and high pitched voice. He is wearing a blue vest, with a white shirt and black tie. He is also wearing black shorts, to which he likes to wear shorts quite often, along with black loafer shoes. Jesse is an openly homosexual man, that has an artistic personality about him. Jesse was hired as a bank teller only a couple weeks before Russell was hired as manager. He along with Russell, are both recently hired to company. Jesse has had a very damaging upbringing, with many obstacles he had to overcome. Not only being a black man, but also a homosexual man as well. Adapting to the issues of society with that. He was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia living in the inner city of the southern United States. He was in a terrible family situation in a working class background. He was born an only child. His mother Claudette who passed away when he was only three years old, was a drug addict and succumbed to her drug addiction, and he never met his father at all. Jesse who had no other family, lived his entire life in a foster care system, with many other black children. Due to how proficient he was in High School, Jesse was offered a Scholarship at the “University of Southern California.” The same school Russell attended, however he and Russell have never met each other before working at the “Sunset Credit Union”, nor do they both know that they went to the same school.

Jesse decided to move from Atlanta, to Los Angeles. He decided to go onto study communication studies. Jesse had a desire to become a journalist and a news anchor. Jesse holds a very neutral political opinion, and feels maybe due to the fact of his own personality and profile, that his opinion doesn’t matter, and he doesn’t know where he fits in. Jesse does not have any friends, and like Russell seems to have social issues befriending others. Unlike Russell, Jesse is more outgoing than he is, and Jesse sometimes uses that as a defense mechanism to hold his feelings. Jesse lives by himself also in the south Los Angeles area. He was going to continue school and graduate however, it wasn’t until a couple years ago that Jesse decided that he no longer wanted to pursue that, and decided to drop of school with an undeclared major.

Jesse who suffers from Bipolar Disorder, which he was diagnosed with in his teenage years. He began to work an array of odd jobs. Such as working at working at a fast food restaurant, a retail clothing store, and at a hotel, which was his previous job. He then decided with no prior experience working in a bank, to apply for a bank teller position at the “Sunset Credit Union”, to which he was hired on by Peter, who seemed to be enthralled by Jesse’s strange personality. He along with Russell, is very secretive about his mental disorder and this fact about himself, and doesn’t disclose it. Likewise, with Jennifer and all of his other coworkers aside from Peter, Russell has a very distant and complicated relationship with Jesse. Being that they are both relatively new to the company and only working there for a few months, they still do not have much good rapport with each other. Jesse respects Russell as his manager, and he leaves it alone at that. Although, Russell and Jesse are very professional with each other as far as work is concerned. Even though Russell is aware that Jesse is homosexual, he has not come out with his sexuality to him at all, nor does Jesse know about Russell’s sexuality, or anything about his personal life outside of work. Russell feels Jesse doesn’t need to know that information about him, and so he keeps it to himself.

Jennifer and Jesse do not associate much outside of work. They are at a friendly professional level when working, but they are not closer than that when they are outside the bank. Jesse has a friendly and respecting relationship with Peter, though when Jesse is not working, he doesn’t keep in touch with Peter that much at all. Jesse tries to keep a professional relationship with him. Jesse all around is a well-liked employee apart of the bank.

The final employee currently working in the bank is Yvette Martinez. She is a thirty-eight-year-old curvy Hispanic woman, who has long brunette hair, and long dangling earrings. Yvette has been working at the bank longer than Russell, Jesse, and Jennifer, but she hasn’t been working in the bank as long as Peter. She has been working in the bank for over twelve years. Yvette is a financial advisor. Unlike the bank tellers, she has a separate desk that’s adjacent to the lobby. Similar to that of Peter. Her job is to assist customers with opening up new checking or savings accounts, dealing with loans and payment plans, and dealing with any other customer issues regarding their account. Yvette originally started out as a bank teller, then she was moved onto becoming a financial advisor. Yvette is a woman in which not much of her personal life is known. She is a mother of two young children, a seven-year-old son Ricky, and a nine-year-old daughter Laura. She was once married, but is now divorced. She is currently dating a forty-year-old bearded Caucasian man named Matt Meyers. Not much else is known aside from that. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, and comes from a very big family. She is Catholic and is very devoted to her faith. Yvette keeps a conservative and professional attitude towards her work. Yvette coincidentally used to previously work at the grocery store which is now called, “Healthy and Fresh”. She used to work at the store when it was under different management and called “SaveCo Foods”, as a checkout lady. Yvette was laid off when the store changed management directions, and she was left without a job. She decided to apply at the bank belonging to the same shopping center as a bank teller, to which she was hired.

Although Yvette keeps a very direct and professional attitude when at work, she is still a very welcoming person and gets along with everyone else at the bank. Her relationship with Peter seems to be the strongest. Yvette like with Russell, has also met Peter’s family, and Peter is also very close to Yvette’s family. Yvette and Jennifer despite being both female, aren’t as close as they should be. Yvette is much older than Jennifer, and she also feels Jennifer’s personality is too loud for her, so that is a reason for the fact they are distant. Yvette isn’t that close with Russell or Jesse, but she has a very safe and comfortable working relationship with the both of them. Yvette does at times feels close with Russell, yet she doesn’t always trust him. She feels he is hiding much about himself, and therefore her relationship with him is damaged because of that.

The other three employees who are currently not working at the bank, consist of two bank tellers. One of the bank tellers is a twenty-six-year-old, slender professional looking Chinese American woman that wears glasses named Tiffany Wong. Tiffany’s parents immigrated to the United States, so she is first generation Chinese. Tiffany has not been working in the bank for that long. She was hired as a bank teller a month before Jesse was. Due to that, her relationship with virtually everyone else at the bank isn’t as strong. She is a very kind and friendly young woman at the bank, and is accepted by everyone else generally. She is currently studying psychology at “Pepperdine University.” When she is not at school, she is working
at the bank. Tiffany keeps private at work, and doesn’t explain much about her personal life that much at all. Because they work alternating shifts, Jesse, Jennifer and Yvette rarely get much contact with her. Peter seems to have a friendly and nice relationship with Tiffany. Russell who is also new like Tiffany, seems to not mind her company, and they have a good bond together usually.

The next absent employee is another bank teller. She is a forty-four-year-old Caucasian woman with short hair named Sally Richardson. She has been working at the bank for a long time, longer than Yvette. She has been working at the bank for fifteen years as a teller. Sally unlike the other employees, is a very difficult woman to be around, including Peter who doesn’t really seem to care for her truth be told. All the other employees of the bank, along with Tiffany whom she works shifts alongside with, also doesn’t give any special treatment to. She has an equal relationship with her, in which it isn’t really a positive or happy one at all. Russell tends to leave her alone, and keeps his distance with her to avoid any conflict. Her work performance is satisfactory and she shows good contributions to the bank, so even though her personality with the other workers isn’t that well, she still is a good employee to the company. She has a very scornful and passive personality about herself. As far as her history goes, she was born and raised in California, and she used to work as a librarian. She has a son who is in University on the eastern part of the United States. She lives with her husband in Los Angeles.
