Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained Page 58

by Brennen Tammons

“If you are just tuning in, you are now watching a high speed chase on the number 2 highway: The ‘Angeles Crest’ highway, of an armed robbery suspect. Police say this man, and others were a part of a deadly armed robbery earlier today. This man is one of the suspects.”

Jesse continues to hold his hand to his mouth. He walks over to the kitchen area of the unit. Jesse opens the refrigerator, taking out a bottle of beer. He returns to the sofa area, to watch the police chase, while taking sips of the beer. The anchorwoman explains more on the event.

“They have been chasing the man for over an hour now. He is driving at an insanely high rate of speed, and not showing care for other drivers. Police believe he is heading up towards the ‘Angeles National Forest’, although it’s not sure why he’s travelling there.”

As the anchorwoman continues to report on the high speed chase, Jesse is at an extreme loss of words and thoughts. He can’t believe that he’s safe and sound at “Home Base”, yet Brian is running away from the police; in a chase miles away from where the safe house unit currently is. Jesse wonders if Brian intended to do this in some cosmic attempt to prove a point somehow. He sits back on the sofa drinking his beer, paying close attention to the chase. Jesse has been watching the live coverage for about half an hour now, still shocked that Brian is managing to evade the police. Jesse is glued to television, feeling several different emotions from what he is viewing and witnessing on the television screen. As much as he doesn’t want to watch, and feels captivated to turn away, Jesse continues to pay attention to the chase. He mostly finds it odd and thrilling, that he’s watching Brian in a police chase. Jesse doesn’t know how to react or feel; If he should be rooting for Brian speeding down the highway from the police, hoping that he runs away and escapes; or should he react some other type of way; concerned over Brian’s safety.

Jesse then wonders if he’s going to get in trouble as well, as he was also involved in the same robbery that Brian was in. Jesse didn’t kill or shoot anybody like Brian did, but he was still there, and it’s a guilt which is hard to explain and describe that Jesse is experiencing. It’s also puzzling to Jesse, why Brian is running in a direction away from where their safe house is. Brian is heading nowhere near their unit, which is in San Pedro district of Los Angeles; south of where Brian is directing himself. Brian is chasing the police through the mountains, near the “Angeles National Forest”, way further north. Jesse shakes his head and continues to watch the chase.

Brian is currently losing most of his self-control and conscious. He takes another cigarette, and puts it in his mouth, lighting it. Feeling an outrage of rushed emotions, Brian keeps driving, evading the police in this chase. Brian starts to wonder if Russell and Jesse made it back to the unit, as he’s continuing to speed down the highway being chased by the police. Brian has a feeling that Russell and Jesse managed to escape, and were able to get lucky unlike him. He wanted to quickly separate from them because Brian, unlike Russell and Jesse, didn’t kill a police officer, and they are innocent in that regard.

Brian believed if he separated himself, they could stand a better chance that way. Brian feels stupid that he wasn’t smart enough to realize, that he didn’t switch vehicles. He was so worried about multiple things, that he had gotten carless, and made the mistake of staying in the vehicle they escaped the bank in. Brian was hoping that it wouldn’t have made a difference at all. Unfortunately, it turned out that it made a huge impact on how things evolved. Brian takes a puff of his cigarette, driving at high speed; over a hundred miles an hour. He amazingly is able to swift through cars, without hitting them or causing a collision or crash. Brian has a wide grin on his face, putting himself in this zone he’s in. From this chase he’s in, he’s becoming a different version of himself, and turning into a more ruthless man. Brian before today, has never killed anyone, and still feels the guilt of shooting a police officer. He feels that the officer didn’t deserve any of that at all.

Most of the pain Brian is feeling, is deep regret from the actions he has done today. It is now coming up on an hour into the police chase, and Brian remains on this same highway; getting closer to approaching the forest. His plan for now, still remains the same, and he’s confident that it should work in his favor. Brian wants to run into the forest, finding a way to escape and hide, causing a distraction for the police to look for him. The police remain following him, preparing to adapt to whatever move that Brian makes next as the chase continues.

Detective Henderson has now caught up to Brian in the chase, and some of his colleagues, also follow Brian. While he’s in the chase, Detective Henderson receives a call on his mobile phone, and he puts it on speakerphone. Some of the investigators at the police station are informing him that Victor has been properly identified by fingerprints, and that his name is Victor Romero. He did not have any prior criminal history or convictions, aside from issues in his youth, and parking violations. Detective Henderson then confirms this by saying the man mentioned his name was Romero. They also tell the detective that they are unable to come up with any possible leads as to who the other three men involved in the heist are. Detective Henderson is slightly frustrated over this, but he quickly gets himself together, dealing with the news. The detective is also told that the bank worker that was injured in the heist, which was John, is going to be fine. Detective Henderson then thanks the police agents on the phone, and disconnects the call. He remains right behind the rest of the officers, as they chase Brian, who’s heading straight into the forest.

During this time, the police try to implement a “PIT” maneuver on Brian. If this is done correctly, this would make it so Brian would spin his vehicle out of control, immobilizing him; allowing the authorities to take him into custody that way. The officers are get into position, as Detective Henderson watches them attempt the move. As they are doing the formation to knock Brian right into their trick, Brian quickly is able to weave into the other lane, merely missing this. Detective Henderson slams his fist on the steering wheel with anger, aggravated that they missed the chance to correctly pin Brian together with that technique. The chase continues with the news helicopters being positioned right above Brian; recording all of the proceedings.

As the pursuit has now been ongoing for an hour and a half, the men then discuss performing a second “PIT” maneuver. If they are unsuccessful this time, they will leave this tactic alone. Detective Henderson laughs to himself and shakes his head, as he watches the patrol cars attempt to give the maneuver another chance. The patrol cars start the formation to once again try to knock Brian’s vehicle out of control. Sadly, the men once again come up short, and Brian is able to quickly swerve away from their movements. Detective Henderson shakes his head again, upset at the incompetence of this police force, only solidifying his decision to retire.

Jesse remains watching the whole entire chase live on television. Still in much disbelief and shock at the way Brian is acting. Again feeling mixed reactions; being in fear of how the outcome of this chase is going to end. This is an interesting police chase, filled with many suspenseful moments. Not only because of the way Brian is driving, and how he’s able to dodge all of the methods the police are using to disable his vehicle; also because Jesse personally knows Brian, so it’s tough. It’s an interesting way to put it, and Jesse keeps an open and clear mind to all of the events which are happening in the police chase.

While he’s watching the chase, the news station reveals that it’s going to take a quick commercial break. During this time, Jesse looks down at the duffel bags filled with cash under the coffee table. Jesse grabs two of the heavy bags, setting them on top of Brian’s bed. Jesse then walks over by the table again, and grabs the remaining two bags. He also removes the industrial drill Russell used to hack into the vault, and sets the drill down on the floor. Jesse then dumps all of the cash out on the bed, looking at the large amount of money all scattered around. By looking at pile alone, he knows that compared to their previous two heists, this
is the most they were ever able to get. Jesse then starts to count all of the money, separating it into several different groups of one thousand. Making sure that all of the piles are neatly put together in a row, due to the huge amount of cash there is. While he’s continuing to count the cash, the news returns with the pursuit Brian is in. Jesse then decides to take a break from counting the money, and returns to the sofa area to watch.

With it now being two hours into the pursuit, the police are starting to become impatient with Brian. If he keeps this same rate of speed up and stays on this highway, before the hour is out, he will make it into the forest. This would be something the police rather not happen, but they are prepared and ready for regardless. At this time, as the “PIT” maneuvers proved to not be effective at all, the police are now willing to use spike strips to puncture Brian’s tires. Unmarked patrol cars start to speed up away from Brian. When they get a set distance ahead of him, they lay out a big metal sheet of spikes on the road. By implementing this, it will make it so Brian’s tires are punctured, and his vehicle will then stop; putting an end towards the pursuit.

Detective Henderson is not very confident that the spike strips will thwart this pursuit at all. The detective sits back in his seat; watching to see if he is going to be proven wrong, or if his original assertion is correct. As he suspected, Brian notices the spike strips, and makes a very clever move around them; making a quick side weave on the other side of the road. Detective Henderson shakes his head, and is not surprised.

Jesse who’s watching the pursuit on the television, shakes his head, and can’t believe how Brian is able to escape all of the tools the police are using to slow him down. Brian is feeling extremely indestructible at this point, and from the rage and adrenaline in his blood, it’s going to take a lot more than that to stop him. The police remain right behind Brian, accepting that he is going to head straight into the forest very soon, despite all of their efforts to end the pursuit before then. Jesse takes a sip of his beer, and starts to frown and feel upset at how this chase is turning out. It now reaches the two-hour mark, and Brian is less than a mile away from entering the forest area. Once he’s in that area, it will become much harder for the police to catch and apprehend Brian. Especially as the sun is starting to set; they are virtually heading onto nighttime hours. Nightfall and lack of sunlight in the forest, allows for an easy method to not be seen; which is good if you are trying to escape the police. This isn’t good if you are the police, and trying to pursue a suspect. The pursuit carries on, with every move Brian decides to make, being unknown and unpredictable.

Brian reaches into his glove compartment, and starts to light his third cigarette. He takes puffs of the cigarette, and starts to tease the police once again. Brian begins to intentionally jerk and serve the car in a zig-zag fashion; laughing out loud while he’s doing it. With him being very close from entering the forest, Brian starts to believe that his original plan is working out fine. His plan still remains the same, to continue the chase heading into the forest, then running and hiding away in the bush, until the time is right for him to eventually run out from hiding; escaping back into the city any way that he can.

Brian is now travelling inside of the forest. He stays on the highway, driving past the mountains, taking in the view. Brian has mixed emotions’ feeling that if he has to be in a police pursuit, this is the perfect area. The sun proceeds to go down, as evening approaches. Brian has now been driving in the forest for coming up on a half an hour now. Jesse is stuck watching the whole entire chase happen, still in awe from seeing Brian run away from the police. The news helicopters are having a slightly tough time, from the camera reception that the forest gives out from keeping up with him. As a result, the picture quality that the live stream gives out in the news program, starts to become buggy and lags. Brian decreases his speed while he’s in the forest; the roads are quite winding, and one wrong turn could cause Brian to crash or dip his car off the road, leading to ugly results. The officers stay right behind Brian, even though continuing on with a pursuit in the forest is not safe by any means. They as well start to slow down, and distance themselves away from Brian; yet still making sure they don’t lose track or him, or lose him out of their sight.

Detective Henderson follows them into the forest, not expecting at all for this pursuit to last this long. He knows that from this point, Brian is either going to hightail and run into the forest to hide, or his vehicle is going to eventually run out of gas. There is no other scenario or situation to happen. Brian cannot steal another car, as he’s deep in the forest, and all the other roads have been blocked by the police as a result of this chase. Brian also can’t turn back, as the police have also completely barricaded and closed the roads which are positioned behind him. The police are sure that it will not be long before Brian starts to tire, causing the chase to end. However, it seems that it’s going to take a miracle to get Brian out of this beast he’s morphed himself into.

Brian grins and laughs to himself, at the chaos he’s caused in this chase. His hands continue to grasp the steering wheel, as he drives deeper and deeper into the forest. Brian is waiting for the appropriate time to stop the car, so he can run out and hide. He knows that his time to act upon that won’t be long at all, and he needs to get ready. Brian while he’s rushing down the highway in the forest, starts to scan for the perfect area to to dart into. Also minding that he needs to pick a spot that the helicopters will have a tough time capturing him from. Brian also needs to immediately act fast, as if he waits too long when pulling over, the police are more than likely going to fire a fuselage of shots at him. In turn, this will kill Brian. He needs to make sure whatever decision he makes, is logical.

Finally, nearly twenty minutes later, with it now being past 6 P.M., Brian starts to decrease his speed slower and slower. He believes he has now found an area he wishes to dash out to, and is most likely going to be running out in the next minute or so. Brian rolls down his window, so he can hear which direction the helicopter is circling around at. The helicopter is currently facing his right, so if Brian darts out from his driver’s side at this moment, it will give him enough time to run into the bushes; without being seen or caught by the helicopter cameras above in the sky. Brian then decides to slow down his car, and he abruptly makes a complete stop. The ignition of the vehicle however, is still running. Brian starts to finish his cigarette, knowing that he’s most likely going to run out of the car within the next few seconds. The patrol cars behind him stay put, as from their protocol rules since Brian did not open any car doors, at this point they must remain in their vehicles, just in case he decides to take off once again. The helicopter in the sky remains still, however the pilot now moves to the driver’s side direction of Brian’s vehicle. Jesse continues to watch Brian in this pursuit, in complete shock; scared to what Brian intends to actually do. The helicopter remains on the left side of Brian’s vehicle now. Due to this fact, Brian changes his mind on running out at this point, and a few seconds later, he quickly speeds away.

The patrol cars waste no time by keeping up with him, as he heads even deeper into the forest. Brian now isn’t feeling as wild and crazy as he was previously. For the first time in this pursuit, he’s doubting himself, and has no idea what he’s doing. If Brian keeps this attitude up, the unfortunate is mostly likely bound to sure happen. Detective Henderson follows the patrol cars, keeping in mind that is is possibly going to be his last police pursuit ever, as he plans to still retire and quit the police force.

The reception of the helicopters become worse, due to depths Brian is travelling, as he continues down the highway inside the forest. The sky continues to become dim. Brian starts to believe his only hope is that the darkness will allow him some type of redemption to escape the police. From all the technical errors the helicopter cameras are experiencing due to the bad reception, as Brian continues stays on the highway, getting to more distant areas of the forest; the news takes a break from broadcasting the chase.
<
br />   At this time, Jesse decides to walk back over to Brian’s bed; counting the rest of the money they were able to get from the heist. Jesse stacks all the cash neatly in separate groups, making sure that everything is properly counted, and he isn’t missing anything. Jesse finishes the first duffel bag full of cash, and then moves onto the next one, with only three more to go. After counting all of the money in the second duffel bag, Jesse looks around the bed, and sees multiple amount of stacks neatly arranged in rows. Jesse then dumps the third duffel bag of cash on the bed, and starts to count the contents of it. This bag containing the most amount so far. He sets all of the stacks he counted from that bag on the bed, along with the others. When Jesse starts to reach for the final duffel bag, he hears the news station return from break. The news is now able to get a clear stream reception of the chase. Jesse runs back to the sofa, watching the action.
