Jane Doe Page 22

by Lillian Duncan

“I don’t know. Her lasagna was pretty good. Better than good.”

“Thank you, Hunter. I’m glad someone appreciates my cooking.” It felt so good to sit here and to feel truly safe. Now that Charles Whitman was behind bars, he couldn’t hurt her or anyone else.

“What’s going on with the investigation?” Amanda asked.

“Oh, they’re finding out all sorts of interesting things. He did withdraw a hundred thousand dollars from one of his accounts in cash. It fits the timeline for when Sydney deposited it in her account. Other women have come forward as well.”

“He really is a monster.” Amanda shuddered. “Can you imagine what might have happened if he was elected?”

Hunter squeezed Raven’s hand. “God saved you for a purpose. In spite of how afraid you were, you listened to God. We should all learn to be more like you.”

She grinned. “Oh, stop it. You’re embarrassing me. After all, I’m just a narcissistic celebrity-seeking reporter.”

“Speaking of reporters, I hear Shanley’s in trouble with the network. And that her cameraman’s been promoted to an on-camera personality.”

“He certainly deserves it,” Hunter said. “If he hadn’t had the courage to put that video on the air, all of this might not have happened.”

  “Yes, he does.”

After everyone left, Hunter stayed behind to help clean up. He carried dishes to her while she washed them. Then he grabbed a towel and began drying them. Looking up from the soapy dishwater, she said, “I need to put a dishwasher in here.”

“I can do that for you if you want. But I thought you might be moving to New York or Washington. I’m sure you can write your ticket now if you want to be a reporter. And a TV reporter at that.”

“I already said I’m right where I want to be. I’m going to bake cookies and try my hand at writing a novel.”

“Are you sure this is where you want to be?”

“Not only am I where I want to be, but I’m with the man I want to be with.” She dried her hands on the towel. “I know you told me that I wasn’t ready for a relationship but…”

He smiled and moved closer. “I might have been mistaken about that.” His arms went around her.

“I’m pretty sure you were wrong.”

She leaned closer and closer…until their lips met.

  Author’s Note

  Dear Readers,

Secrets can be a good thing. A surprise birthday party. Christmas time secrets. A secret proposal that took lots of planning and secrets to get you to the right place at the right time. But there are other secrets. Secrets that hurt. Secrets that hinder. Secrets that destroy. Secrets that make you hide from people and God. I know all about those kind of secrets.

For many years, I lived a secret life not of my own making, but still it was my choice. Because of my choices, I ran from God. The more I ran the more miserable I became. It was only when I stopped living with the secrets that I found my way back to God.

God was right there waiting for me and since then God’s helped me rebuild my life. A life filled with love, peace, and joy—in spite of having brain tumors (non-cancerous, but not benign).

When you keep secrets because you’re afraid of what other people will think, then they aren’t the right kind of secrets. Like Raven, it’s not always easy to share secrets but as Raven learned, bringing the secrets to light will take you out of the darkness.

And God will be there waiting for you with open arms.

  God Bless & Good Reading.
