Chad pulled another beer from the nearly empty case, handing one to Randall and Johnathan each before cracking one open for himself. No sooner had he taken the first sip than Paxton took a place once again at the fire.

“What happened?” Randall asked eagerly. “Where’s Dasha? Did you guys…ya know?” He smiled and made a clicking noise with his tongue.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” Actually not wanting to. “Give me a beer.”

Chad handed him his own, watching Pax chug the entire thing before burping loudly.

  “I told you,” Chad announced.

  “Told them what?” Pax said.

“Nothing. What happened?” Chad’s tone had all the cockiness of an “I told you so” without having actually said it.

  “She went off with Darren.”

“What?! How? When? Why? Dude!” Johnathan sounded just as disappointed as Paxton was.

“Well,” Pax began, “We walked, we almost kissed—I was going to kiss her—and right at that moment, Darren stumbled up, totally wasted, and stole her away.”

“And she went with him?!” Johnathan asked.

  “Yeah. But I think…”

“What do you think?” Chad said.

“Well, I think she was just being polite—I mean, I could tell she didn’t really want to go, but she felt pressured.”

“You’ve got to be kidding.” Chad slapped his palm against his forehead.

“Look—he was just so insistent, and our conversation was pretty much over anyway.” Paxton defended.

“Dude—you let him take her away.” Chad explained.

“No—our ‘walk’ was just about over.”

“You just let the Alpha walk in and take your girl.”

“It’s not your problem.” Paxton defended.

“Whatever man. She walked off with the bigger, stronger, more attractive guy.”

“No way—you saw her when he came over before, she rejected him—she’s not like that.”

“Yeah I’ll believe it when I see it. Let me know when you lose your virginity.”

“Whatever. Don’t worry about it. I’ll make it happen with her and I—I’ve still got a few tricks up my sleeve. But I’ll do it the right way—like a gentleman. I’m not gonna go get wasted and do her at some party—it’ll be done my way. I’ve got what he doesn’t.”

“And what’s that? 20% more body fat?

  “Charm.”

“Whatever man” Chad concluded. “She went off with the guy who isn’t you. There’s no denying that.”

“She’s not like that!” Paxton was getting angry.

“All women are like that.” Chad concluded, “I’m going home.” And he got up and left.
