Refuge From The Dead | Book 3 | Dead Fall Page 32

by Masters, A. L.

They were lucky to have found this old lean-to. It would be dawn soon, hopefully they could find a road and get back to the cabin.

“They’re here,” Lane said from the entrance.

“Lily…Tasha, get up, we have to move!” he said, shaking their shoulders.

He could see the blue tint to their lips and knew they were exhausted and almost frozen. They couldn’t stop, and they certainly couldn’t light a fire here. Maybe when they got somewhere safer.

“Cara, help me get them up,” he asked.

Cara was leaning against his shoulder, her head against his.

  “’Kay,” she whispered.

She finally stood and they got them moving again.

Lily was falling behind. She was carrying more body weight in addition to her weapon.

Unfortunately, they didn’t have much ammo, or they would have already tried to take the herd out.

“Come on, babe. Keep moving your feet. One in front of the other. We’re almost done,” he urged.

He kept the others in sight in front of them and kept Lily by his side.

They would make it. He would make sure of it. He would die before he quit, before he allowed any of them to quit…

  Epilogue Two

  The Others

  Jonah

Jonah was hoping they could go back soon, but he didn’t know which way. Monica said it wasn’t safe, that they had to keep moving forward. He didn’t like her, but Cam and his dad had trusted her, so he would.

Killer kept pace beside them, his little legs eating up the miles with ease.

“Can we take a break soon?” he begged.

“Got to keep moving for a while longer. If you hadn’t run out after your dad back there, we would have been able to get in a vehicle like others probably did, but you did…so here we are,” she said, somewhat impatiently.

“Do you think Jessica made it out all right?” he asked hesitantly, breathing heavily.

His breath showed white in the early morning glow.

“Probably. They are better off than we are right now, I’m sure. We’ll try to find a road, then find somewhere to hole up and rest. When I think it’s safe, we’ll go back to the cabin. I’m sure your dad and Jessica will be back there before us,” she told him.

He didn’t really believe it one hundred percent, but it made him feel a little better.

For now, he would keep running until Monica said he could stop. The crowd of dead was still too close, and he could smell their death stench, even through the strong, acrid scent of pine.

Whew! You made it! I want to take this time to apologize for the little cliffhanger at the end there (I hate those!) but it really was necessary. Take comfort in the fact that you won’t have to wait long to find out what happens next. Dead Winter is complete and I’m getting it ready for publication now!
