  Acknowledgments

I am very grateful to Keshini Naidoo and Lindsey Mooney at Hera Books, for believing in my stories and guiding me through the process of being published.

I have learnt a good deal about the Great War through the moving memoir of Vera Brittain, in Testament of Youth. (Virago Press, ISBN 0 86068 035 5.)

I have also referred to A Nurse at the Front, based on the First World War diaries of Sister Edith Appleton, edited by Ruth Cowen. (Simon & Schuster, ISBN 978-1-84983-366-0.)

I have a great respect for the women who lived through the First World War and, besides fulfilling traditional tasks, turned their hands to difficult and demanding work they would not otherwise have tackled. Sometimes they filled the places of men who had joined up, by serving in restaurants or acting as bus conductors. Others were particularly respected for driving ambulances and training as nurses. Some travelled to France, at risk of mines in the Channel and bombs aimed at railway lines near their hospital. Their courage helped demonstrate their right to be allowed the vote.

I must also extend my sincere thanks to all who helped me on my path to becoming a published writer. Here I must include the Romantic Novelists’ Association, a valuable source of advice and encouragement for novice writers. Formed to promote romantic fiction and encourage good writing, this year (2020) it celebrates its sixtieth birthday.
