I shoot Dillon a dirty look. I wasn’t going to bring that up. It’s still too early for a paternity test. But we don’t know if it’s Joe’s or Dillon’s baby. Up until the time we found out I was expecting, we’d all been intimate together. But a child changes everything.
I had been spending more time with Dillon and only Dillon over the last year. Although I love Joe, and he’s still one of my best friends, I feel more connected to Dillon. He’s supportive of everything, warm, emotional. I can’t think of a better father. If I’m being honest, I want him to be the father. But I love this child growing in me either way. And I will find a way for Joe to be a part of it, despite being literally worlds apart now.
“Call us when you have moved into your new place?” I ask, excited. I can’t see Joe’s face well enough to read his emotions, not that I have gotten better at that.
“Sure,” Joe says.
“We’re looking at coming out before I get too big to fit on an airplane,” I say excitedly. “I have always wanted to go to Scotland and now you are right there!”
“I look forward to it,” Joe states.
I see him pick up one of the fancy Scotch glasses I got him as a going-away present. It disappears into the fuzzy blob where his face should be. Apparently, his internet isn’t very good.
“You are glowing, Sandy,” Joe adds. “Pregnancy suits you.” With that comment, he ends the call.
I stand and wrap my hands around Dillon. My Dillon. I can honestly say, I love life. And I can’t wait for everything the future holds.
