Almonds and Arson Page 8

Sunny sat up and barked and then Lydia heard a knock at the door. She opened it and saw Daniel with a picnic basket.

“Hi. I was wondering if you weren’t too busy if maybe you would like to have a picnic with me?”

Lydia smiled. “I think I’d like that very much, Danny.”

Daniel cringed. “I hate being called Danny. It reminds me of when I was a little boy getting in trouble.”

“I can’t imagine you getting in trouble. Saving people from trouble – yes.”

“There’s just one thing missing from my picnic basket,” Daniel said with a smile. “I’m all out of almond taffy.”

“I think I could find a few pieces hidden in the kitchen,” she replied. “And then I would love to go to the beach with you.”

  Sunny barked.

“I guess she could come too,” Daniel said. “Though if we’re at a designated dog beach, we might have some other canines come to investigate what we’re eating.”

“As long as I’m with you two, I don’t mind,” Lydia said. “But I do need to be back this evening to meet up with Trina. She is in definite need of a girl’s night.”

“I promise to have you back in time.”

Lydia grabbed the almond taffy from the kitchen while Daniel found Sunny’s leash and prepared her for travel.

“While we’re on the picnic, I can tell you about the committee’s next idea to raise money: a Men of Ocean Point calendar,” Daniel said. “But I put my foot down and said it was time we did something with an ocean theme instead. We’re going to have a sandcastle contest.”

  “I like it,” Lydia said.

They headed out the door, and Lydia locked it. Daniel helped Sunny into his truck. However, before they left, Daniel said, “Now, I’ve heard something about you giving strutting lessons? And I think this is something that I need to see.”

Lydia groaned. “Well, since you helped me save my best friend, I guess I can embarrass myself on your behalf a little.”

With that, she strutted towards the truck, eager for the picnic and afternoon ahead.
