Prologue
“C’mon Courtney. Give me one more chance.” Brad tried yanking me back into bed.
“No. Fuck! Let me go, man. You’re suffocating me.” I jumped into my jeans, then yanked my shirt back on. Why I allowed this lunatic to convince me to come home with him was beyond me.
You’re a weed head!
That’s what did it. Brad lured me into his trap, stealing pot, saying this time would be different.
Very soon now I wouldn’t have to depend on a supplier to get the high I needed. The shit would be legal in Illinois next year.
“Suffocate?” Brad half chuckled. “It’s called being a boyfriend.”
Brad’s idea of being a good boyfriend was prohibiting me from hanging with friends, calling me repeatedly making sure I was at work and not banging someone else. Not to mention, having me watched by fellow detectives and co-workers.
Never date a crazy cop!
I’d managed to call a couple of regulars just to get my rocks off, but it took some secret squirrel type shit to get away with it.
“No, you’re a psycho!” I slipped my feet into my loafers and stomped out the room. I yanked my phone from my purse and pressed the screen to find an Uber. I’d be damned if I stayed here, listening to this asshole whine about his rights as my man.
At first, I thought it cute he was so possessive. Now I just found it creepy. Sure, I craved being nurtured and loved but Brad took this shit to the next level.
“You’re not leaving me!” Brad ran out of his bedroom, totally naked.
I fought with myself not to look down at the dick I’d be losing out on.
Damn.
Fighting my own torturous cock, I moistened my lips and looked up at his face. The wild brown eyes, messy hair of the same color I enjoyed tugging on while he fucked me into the mattress. The man was older, had a body like a Greek God. So, fucking perfect, but all the chaos of working the beat had gone to his head.
The same head I held down while he rimmed my ass like he owned it.
Focus Courtney!
“Courtney. Please, baby. C’mon back to bed. I promise you I’ll be better. I’ll calm down.” Brad held out his hand for me to take.
My gaze dropped down to his hard dick pulsating between his legs, then back up to gorgeous eyes.
I’d be without Brad’s magic cock, but at least I’ll have backups and my sanity. I wouldn’t have to look over my shoulder anymore, wondering if another of Brad’s buddies were watching my every move.
Sure, things would get lonely, but my “girls trip” was coming up. I had to break things off with Brad so I wouldn’t worry about him calling in favors to stop me.
No fuck this shit.
This chapter in my life was over.
I’m young and hot enough to find someone else to be the daddy I craved without all the extra baggage.
“Courtney.”
Brad’s pleading woke me from my daze. Just then, my phone dinged, signaling the Uber’s arrival.
“Bye Brad.” I ran out of his house, barely dressed, not looking back at the man who’d been my on and off again for almost two years.
“You’ll be back, baby. I’ll make sure of it!” Brad yelled as I closed the door.
“The hell you will.” I screamed out the window, ignoring the stunned look on the driver’s face. I meant that, but
how far would I have to go just to escape Brad’s clutches?
Chapter One
Two weeks later…
Courtney
“Courtney, if you don’t come the fuck on!” Rory yelled from the other room of our suite.
“Shit. Coming, man. Don’t get you panties up in a bunch.”
“You mean thong.” He laughed.
“Slut!” I screamed back and checked my look.
“Proud of it.” Rory countered.
Chuckling at his response, I shook my head and tugged on my skirt. We’d been on vacation for the last week and a half, shitting, sunning, and sinning, not necessarily in that order. Tonight, we planned on heading out on the town again to walk the strip and let trouble find us.
Anything to make me forget…
You’ll come back to me! I’ll make sure of it!
Brad’s warning sounded in my head like an annoying alarm. Need to get shitfaced to drown that threat from my memory.
Although we paid the price later me, Rory, and my other buddies, Gabe and Curtis were having a great time. On the cusp of thirty, living our best lives, only to pass out and do it all over again the next day.
Admiring myself, I straightened my shoulders and turned around, eyeing my backside in the mirror. Despite being a former dancer, I kept my body in shape so my clothes would fit right. I was all for showing body positivity, but I felt most comfortable as a lean, mean, fucking machine. Girls liked my muscled chest and abs while the boys liked my ass. Any chance I got, I flaunted my hot frame to get what I wanted and then some.
As a group, we’d figured to go with the femme look. The black minidress with matching boy shorts leaving little to the imagination would be my ticket to free drinks and weed. Might just snag a high roller to get down and dirty with too. Either way, I’d have cock in my ass before dawn.
“Courtney. Your butt looks fine! C’mon!”
That was Curtis this time. I grabbed my small handbag and rushed into the front room of our suite. My crew had dressed to the nines as I had.
“Damn, babes. I knew you were killing it, but I didn’t think you’d pull out the sexy party dress.” Curtis said and whistled low.
“Fuck yeah. I’m trying to get laid by someone important.” I plunged my hand into my purse and removed my compact. I didn’t go heavy on the makeup, but I wore enough to accentuate my eyes, killer cheekbones, and lips.
“Laid? Is that all you care about?” Curtis said, brushing his hair.
“Yep, what else is there? I’m responsible… somewhat. Got a promising career, drowning in school debt like every other millennial. Should there be anything else?”
“Just saying. Doesn’t that get a little tiring? Jumping from bed to bed without something real?” Curtis asked.
“Please. Courtney Hague will never marry anyone. His middle name might as well have been single-for-life.” Rory laughed and walked over, giving me a hug.
“It’s true. Too many good-looking people out there to be talking about monogamy. I like my options wide open.”
“Spoken like a true ho. I mean that in the nicest way too.” Rory patted my shoulder.
Knowing we talked about each other like that all the time, I didn’t balk.
Rory was my bestie. If we weren’t like brothers, he would’ve been my boyfriend. We’d tried that, but the divas in us made us more frenemies than lovers, so we cut that shit quick.
“Okay Romeo, don’t say anything when someone special comes out of nowhere and sweeps you off your feet.” Curtis fluffed his brown curls.
“That’s if I don’t get to him or her first.” Gabe cut in.
“Nah. If the person is a she, I’ll let you have it. I’m pining for dick.”
“Ooh damn.” Curtis chuckled, pulling down his skirt. “I guess we better stay out of your way if a hunk comes around, huh?”
“Yep.” I said proudly and closed my makeup kit. “I’ll make a subtle hint if I’m eyeing someone.”
Not that I had a particular type, but he had to be handsome, built, and intelligent. Financially stable would be a plus, even better if he was older. At twenty-nine, men my own age did little for my libido. Maturity had become a bigger turn on than youth.
“All right. Good plan. Let’s get out of here. The driver is coming around the corner now.” Gabe said aloud, checking his watch.
Rory clasped my bicep, while Curtis grabbed Gabe. We’d put our money together to book a penthouse. This getaway cost almost as much as I pulled in a month, but I didn’t care. We’d made plans to do it up for our birthdays and Gabe’s happened to be the first up.
After we left, we headed to the elevator down the hall. When the doors opened, we stepped on and rode down to the lobby.
“Where are we going?”
“Checking out a couple of casinos, then onto the club to dance the night away. Remember the rules, girls. If you leave with someone, call, text, message, or send a smoke signal, okay?”
We all laughed. Gabe was always the overly responsible one, even in play mode. He had every right to be though, especially when he was the only one I told about Brad’s maniacal ways.
Every time I thought about telling Rory, I nearly pissed on myself. He was freaking dangerous when he got mad. Yet another reason we couldn’t be a couple.
“Yes, mommy.” I chided Gabe. “Ooh, whose got the pipe?”
“I do,” Curtis said, pulling it from his purse. “We can all take a toke once we get out of the car.”
“Shit.” I frowned, desperately wanting a smoke. At only eight p.m., I was raring to let lose.
I sensed that Mr. RightNow was waiting for me somewhere. Just needed to get to that place and show him my fabulous tongue skills.
Once we arrived, we all took turns with the pipe then ran inside like a bunch of goofy hyenas. On the way in, we got more than our share of looks, but no one interested me. This included fools who had snide remarks about guys in dresses. We ignored them and kept going with our heads held high. None of us worried about the haters.
Walking inside the main hall, we got change from the machines, ordered drinks, then sat at the slots. Honestly, I wasn’t a gambler, so I had no clue what to do.
“Hey. You’re looking a little lost there.” Rory said after he scored a win.
I shrugged and put the quarter inside. After jerking the lever, I sipped my drink. With the weed coursing through my system, I already had a small buzz. “I’m lost, but I don’t give a shit. Just doing it for show.”
Rory chuckled. “Aw babes. You gotta try to win something.”
I downed my drink, then pressed the button to order another.
Jack and cola with lime always did the trick.
“No for real.”
I plunged another quarter in and pulled the handle. “Whatevs. I don’t know how people get off on this.”
“The high comes from winning, silly.” Gabe called over his shoulder.
“Which I probably won’t do for the rest of the night. Maybe I should try my hand at the tables.”
“I wouldn’t. Not unless you plan on blowing some serious cash.” Curtis offered.
I laughed again and re-crossed my legs. “I don’t have much after paying for the room. What about the blackjack table? I can totally play that.”
“You could but some of them want a lot just to sit there. Good luck on finding a cheap one.” Rory said, giggling.
“Damn, really?” I put another coin in and pulled. In a couple of seconds, the thing rang, and lit up like a fucking Christmas tree. “Holy shit! I won!”
“See?” Rory came over and grabbed my shoulders.
“Beginners luck.” Gabe harrumphed.
“Did I make enough to buy in on a table now?”
Curtis leaned over and pulled the slip of paper out. “You won three hundred.”
“Seriously? All that noise for three Benjamin’s?” I rolled my eyes and leaned back in my chair. “Well that’s enough to buy a round at least.” The moment I finished my sent
ence, the waiter who resembled a younger version of Jason Momoa, put my glass on the side table. His hair was pulled into a messy bun, with stray hairs hanging out the side, wearing a bowtie and a fuck me dirty smile.
“Here’s your drink, lucky man.” He smiled and winked.
Although I was thinking high roller, he was too handsome to ignore. I batted my fake lashes and leaned in close. “Mhmm. I am indeed. Care to join us when you get done with your shift?”
Rory and Curtis snickered.
“I just might. Will you be at this particular slot for the rest of the evening?”
“As long as you promise to come back, I’ll be wherever you want me to be.”
The waiter chuckled. “All right then. I get off at two. My names’ Ross. I’ll come find you, sexy.” He walked away.
As he left, I kept watching his backside. Nice ass, but I couldn’t see much else under the uniform.
“What happened to getting a high roller?” Rory teased.
“Ross is a backup.” I offered without hesitation.
“See. Told you monogamy is impossible for him.” Rory said chuckling.
I did too, knowing that shit was true.
Besides, if I couldn’t have my high roller or Momoa himself, why not go with the hottie look-a-like?
Chancellor
“Chance, what’s up for next Saturday night? Are we on for the game or what?” My friend Erick’s voice boomed through the speakers.
“Not sure. All depends on how this meeting goes with Kao.” I made the right turn onto the strip. As per usual, traffic was bumper to bumper with cars stopping in front of various casinos or hotels and pedestrians crossing the street.
“Who’s Kao?”
“A potential client. He wants a Delorean type car with a Benz shape.”
Erick laughed. “Sounds like someone who has no idea what he wants.”
Chancellor harrumphed. “I don’t question my customer’s choices I just make them.” I honked the horn at someone who wasn’t paying attention. “Hey listen, I gotta go. I’ll call you tomorrow if I can check out the game.”
