  "Yes, and she also writes the lists."

  John turned to Bethany. "After I get dressed, can I go next door? I think I left a dead mouse in Mrs. Abermarle's breadbox as a joke. I do not want to be on the naughty list."

  She nodded. "Good idea."

  "And John?" Blake tapped his shoulder. "You and your sister may call me Uncle Blake if you'd like."

  In answer, John hugged Blake's legs. "Happy Christmas, Uncle Blake."

  When toys occupied the children's attention once more, Bethany gladly returned to the comfort and security of Blake's embrace.

  Christmas was a time of miracles and love, happiness and acceptance. She had found all of that and more in the unlikely arms of an elf.
