  "Yeah, I can."

  "Don't sound so enthusiastic."

"It's fantastic. I just hope he doesn't want the same thing as the other director."

That caught Jack's attention. He eyed me curiously.

"He's actively casting UltraMega 2. They are looking for someone to take over Bree Taylor's character. I'm sure it's gonna go to somebody who is already famous, but hell, even if I could get a line in a movie that big it would be HUGE!"

"I'll keep my fingers crossed," I said.

"Anyway, gotta go. I just wanted to tell you the good news. Tell Jack I said hi!"

She ended the call, and I answered Jack's curious gaze with the details.

JD shrugged. "At least she's not doing porn."

Life was beginning to get back to normal in Coconut Key. If you could call Coconut Key normal. Willow Rose, her brother, and his accomplice were all facing capital murder charges. And they all turned on each other. Despite the sheriff’s wishes to the contrary, the press picked up on the Samantha Baxter story. It was all over the headlines and on TV. Because of the exposure, several more women came forward making allegations against Ed. Apparently he had used his position as a law enforcement officer to extort sexual favors from detainees and women he had pulled over for traffic stops. It was a disgusting abuse of power, and I only wish we could have stopped him sooner.

Jack and I fulfilled our obligation to the pageant and took the photos of the winners. Denise was officially named 4th Runner-Up, and would step in if the other three defaulted on their obligations. Crystal Connors urged her to compete in next year's pageant.

  I'm not sure she would.

We had crafted a makeshift photography studio in the salon of the Vivere. We had a gray collapsible backdrop hanging from a stand, and a few studio strobes that were triggered from a remote attached to the camera's hot-shoe.

  We almost looked like professionals.

The girls wore their sashes, and their crowns sparkled under the brilliant flashes of light. Their makeup was done to perfection, and their flawless smiles beamed.

Jack continued to urge Crystal Connors that a swimsuit calendar of the pageant girls would be good for business. His lobbying efforts seemed to be successful, but that would be an adventure for another day.

Brooklyn and Denise maintained their friendship, which pretty much precluded us from exploring what could have been. That scenario was fraught with potential drama, and I certainly didn't want to do anything to hurt Denise's feelings.

Darrell Casey’s information didn’t lead to a conviction. But it did lead to a confession. I held to my word and deposited the money in his commissary. I hated giving the scumbag money, but we wouldn’t have solved the case without his assistance.

Besides, I didn’t doubt his threat, and I already had enough reasons to look over my shoulder.

I got a call from Isabella, my former handler at Cobra Company. I hadn’t heard from her since my last mission. I was trying to avoid calling in favors because I didn't want to owe her anything.

"I've got some information I think you'll be interested in," Isabella said.

"What's it going to cost me?" I asked, dryly.

"Nothing. Just one friend passing along information to another."

I let it hang in the air for a moment.

"I'm listening," I said, not sure if I really wanted to know.
