It felt like… her bond.
Pulsing and humming, making her want—no, need to be one with him.
“Now,” she said, putting her arms up to welcome him. “Inside me. I want to seal our bond.”
He grinned at her, taking one more lick, making her tight as a bowstring. “You sure?”
She nodded fiercely, and he seemed to notice there was more going on for her than simply pleasure for once.
He nodded and came over her, covering her body with his, gloriously naked in front of her.
His hands propped on either side of her head. “Are you sure you want to mate me? I don’t know if we’ll be soul bonded or—”
Her arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him in tight. “I love you, you silly dragon or fae, whatever you are, with all of my heart. I would have died for you there in the dream world. I left you for you to be safe. But if you’re going to insist on getting in trouble, I’m gonna need to stay around you.”
“Aren’t you usually the one in trouble?” He grinned.
“I’ve saved you twice,” she said, holding up a hand.
“I came to the dream realm,” he said. “But you’re right. I guess I better keep you around.”
She flushed, and he smiled at her reaction before putting his hands over hers, entwining their fingers.
“Are you ready?”
She nodded.
Slowly, he nudged her legs apart, and she felt his warm tip at her entrance. She shivered with pleasure, reminded of so many other times they’d been together.
But this was different. She was hiding nothing. Holding nothing back. Not keeping him at bay, but letting him truly close to her.
And when he slowly seated himself inside her, filling her completely and making warmth and joy swell in her heart, she let out a sigh.
Landon leaned down, bringing them closer together. And when his lips claimed hers, she felt the warmth intensify, burning like a fire so hot it could sear her. But instead of pain or fear, she only felt want and happiness. The sensation of being whole, of being loved.
He kissed her more urgently, tongue twisting with hers, flicking along the inside of her mouth, and her body tensed from her toes to her fingertips as she kissed him back. Even when Vex moaned, the tight fit of him inside while he plundered her mouth so intense it could make her come instantly, she held on a little longer.
Just as he broke the kiss, he slid out then drove into her hips again. Fierce pleasure shot down her thighs, making her fingers clench against his hands.
Landon just smiled down at Vex tenderly, expression full of that heated, intense desire that had always been there from the first time they’d met but that she’d never really understood until now.
He kissed her cheek, then moved to her neck, and Vex felt his fingers interlacing more firmly, clasping tightly and keeping her arms at her sides. The steady rhythm he moved at was torturous, drawing each bit of pleasure out of her with the entirety of his length.
“Mine.” He sucked on the sensitive spot right beneath her ear, the sparks that went off under her skin where he touched a warm contrast to the erotic plunge of his thickness into her at the same time. “Forever.” He uttered the word like an oath as he bit down lightly on her bare skin, and she gasped just as he filled her again.
“Mine too.” She leaned up to nip at his neck, hungering for him even as he was building another release within her with each passing second.
His eyes went wide for a moment as she took his lips this time, kissing him back. And when they broke apart, his bright-blue irises were hot as a scorching clear summer day.
He released her hands and propped himself up with one palm on the bed, while the other felt up the side of her hip and stomach before reaching her right breast. While he did that, he started to move faster, intensifying the build so she could no longer hold back the pleasure roiling inside her.
“Landon,” she moaned, his thumb stroking relentlessly over her nipple as he drove his hips into her, his sculpted length pressing against that extra-sensitive spot inside her and making Vex eager to come.
“Hold it for me,” he said urgently, now kissing her ear while massaging her breast and bringing their bodies crashing together all at the same time.
She bit down on the inside of her cheek, overwhelmed and happy and trying to focus on anything but the way his blue depths were threatening to make her lose control just by looking up. But she couldn’t close her eyes, couldn’t tear her gaze from his even as he reached the hand that had been tweaking her nipple between them now.
And oh, just the way their bodies met over and over, their fit perfect and fierce with each thrust.
She barely even registered his hand at the apex of her hips. She was so agonizingly close until she felt Landon’s finger slide over her clit, teasing her past the edge.
“Now come for me,” he urged, stroking once, twice, three times at the same moment he filled her completely.
But she was already on the way there, falling into a blur of pleasure as she screamed his name over and over. And even as her sex clenched around his length, releasing tension and want with rapid pulses shooting through her body, the sensation of his hardness only pushed her deeper into her orgasm.
When she slumped back against the bed, still aching for more of him, she sent him a surprised glance. How had he not lost it?
Looking at his features, though, perhaps he wasn’t as unaffected as she’d thought. Landon’s brows were furrowed, his breathing intensified. His gorgeous body was already glowing, muscles bulging from having held back.
She’d make damn sure he came with her this time.
Something about seeing her big, caring man lose control from so much pleasure was an experience in itself.
Vex wrapped both arms around Landon’s neck, pulling him down onto her as he grunted in surprise. His weight was like nothing to her, though, and she kissed him with all her might while she used the leverage of her body wrapped around his to pull her hips away a few inches before sliding over him.
Sparks of pleasure shot to her core, but she kept moving.
She’d never wanted someone like him. Never wanted anyone before him.
Now all she’d ever want was him.
“You really go for something when you want it,” Landon said. His hand grabbed her ass, and he pushed into her just as she pulled herself over him, doubling the speed and sensation. “I love that about you. I love everything about you, Vex.”
She gasped, filled to the brim but holding on to each precious second with her soul bond. Around them, magic thrummed in the room, humming like a wordless song ringing in her ears. She could feel her own energy, purple and indigo, intermingling with her lover’s, which she could see now as an array of multiple colors hanging like a fine mist.
But there wasn’t time to focus on that as their hips thrust into each other’s. The slick sound was erotic as they clung to each other as if their lives, their very souls, depended on it.
From here on out, she’d be depending on him just as she knew he depended on her.
As partners. As friends. As lovers. Building a future together wherever that took them.
Vex grinned against Landon’s shoulder as she could feel his heartbeat racing. His breaths were hot against her, hurried, as his arm wrapped tightly around her back, bringing her partially off the bed while he continued to thrust.
She was so tense a light breeze could make her lose it (if the light breeze was named “Landon”), but she just continued to hold on.
The magical energy in the room was almost deafening, the rushing sound of water echoing in ears as her own heart thumped to bursting in her chest.
One last time coming together was all it took as Vex felt Landon’s body tighten around her while everything stood still for a fraction of a moment.
To her own mild chagrin, Vex came first, too overwhelmed to hold back any longer. But Landon came immediately after, cock jerking inside her, making little multicolored spots go of
f behind her eyelids.
Landon grunted, saying her name over and over as his whole body wrapped around her, his release throbbing within and intensifying everything.
Vex wasn’t even sure which way was up or down, but she didn’t care either way as her soul brimmed with happiness and her entire being rocked from top to bottom with the strongest release of her life.
At least the strongest release she’d had so far.
There would be time to set new records for that later, though.
Vex found herself wrapped around Landon by the time her release finally ebbed. But instead of letting go, she just held on harder, savoring the moment and the knowledge that Landon was hers forever.
And that she was his too.
“You are too amazing for words,” Landon said, and she could feel his grin against the skin on her neck.
She just held on a little tighter.
“Says the guy who keeps making me come over and over,” she muttered, whole body blushing from exertion.
“Something I intend to repeat as many times as possible over the course of our lives.”
“Why, you…” She pulled away to say something but instantly melted under the love in his gaze as he looked her over. He cupped the back of her neck, thumb stroking over her cheek, and she only felt love and tenderness as she looked back. “You’re just so wonderful, Landon.”
His smile was simply everything, and he kissed her one more time before slowly pulling out of her and going to the bathroom to clean up.
When he strode back in, he stopped at the edge of the bed for a minute. His gaze raked over her, making her squirm, before he finally lay down next to her and sat up on one elbow. “Can I hold you?”
“Of course,” she replied, already scooting backward until her shoulders and back met his chest. His arms wrapped around her, making her feel safe and cared for.
She couldn’t resist sighing softly as he just held her close, making her relax just from the warmth of his body and his love for her.
Being this happy all the time would be odd, but Vex supposed she could get used to it.
“We still have the sequel to that movie we watched the other night,” he said, breath tickling her skin.
“The one with all the explosions?”
“Oh yeah. And there’s about… three times the explosions in that one.”
“Now you’re talking,” she said, laughing as his fingertips inadvertently tickled her sides.
Though, it was still surreal that they would just get to spend time together however they wanted.
“Landon?” she asked as he kept placing little kisses everywhere his lips could reach.
“Yes, love?”
She paused, just looking over her shoulder at the man that was her one and only.
“I can’t wait to spend forever with you,” she said. And she meant it. Every word.
“Me neither.”
And when they kissed, a flood of emotion coursed through her like a warm wave crashing over the banks of her soul.
She sighed, then sniffed the air. “Did I smell cupcakes when we came back here?”
“I might have made them so you could taste them when I brought you back." He grinned. “Let’s go get them?”
And as Vex followed Landon out into the kitchen, she watched him in awe, remembering the day he’d come into her fortress in the Blur.
Somehow, she’d never imagined him being the type to agree to the sort of thing she’d offered in the first place. Nor had she thought she would ever be able to settle down.
But maybe that was just how love worked. It shaped and reformed people into better versions of themselves as they sacrificed for and loved someone.
And now that they were together, Vex knew wherever they went, whatever they did, things could only get better.
Epilogue
Vex walked into the great hall of her fortress, noticing it looked dustier than before.
Even a few weeks away from it seemed to suck all the life out of it. She could see now how drab and dreary the world she’d accepted for herself without Landon was.
For the past two weeks, they’d been holed up in his house, making love and just spending every moment together, thinking about their future and discussing their past.
Though, nothing they found out about each other changed their feelings. Every day with Landon only validated Vex’s decision to let him into her heart.
And now she’d let go of the last few strings that tied her to a life that no longer suited her. A lonely life seeking power. A life on the run.
She walked through the dusty hall, with the colored light streaming through it, and over to her office, where she saw a note on the door.
We relocated, seeing as there’s nothing to do here now that you’re with your boytoy. Also, good luck with that. If you ever want cohorts again, you can find us in Arvindale.
She frowned, wondering if the bears would truly be happy there.
PS: Thanks for the money you sent. It bought a pretty nice cottage for us in the forest north of the city and a castle for Toady and Diffy. Turns out Toady’s frog poison has the effect of making Diffy mellow, so they’re getting along. Who’d a thunk it?
Vex smiled at the way the bears wrote, knowing she’d miss her friends, standoffish as they were.
She was glad Toady and Diffy would be okay also. She’d been worried about them.
“So is everything fine?” Landon walked in, looking so handsome she could barely stand it.
“Yes,” she said, relieved.
He stared around the hall. “I remember when I first walked in here. I had no idea what you wanted, but I thought it would be for me to help on a mission.”
She grinned. “I didn’t need your help.”
He came closer, and she did too so they met together in the center of the room with light and dust streaming over them. “I think you did sometimes.”
“You’re right. I have to admit your ability to go to the dream realm was important.” She put a hand up to his face. “And just your ability to have such a good heart.”
His hand covered hers. “It just matches yours.” He brought her hand to his and kissed the outside. “You really think you’ll want to work for the SRP when all this is done?”
“After I travel the world a bit, yes, though I told them they can contact me if they need anything urgent.”
He bit the inside of his cheek, smiling. “Softie.”
“It’s your fault,” she said, blushing and giving him a small shove. “You turned me soft.”
“Nah, you already were that way. I just brought it out in you. Even before me, you just couldn’t resist a lost cause.”
“I still can’t,” Vex said. “I hope in our travels, we find others like us. Rare shifters or paranormals who don’t have a home.”
“We can bring them to the SRP when others couldn’t. It’s true.”
“And we can still portal home if our friends need us.”
“Right.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her back in, and she giggled. “But for now, it’s just us. Seeing the world, exploring in the sun… And that’s how I want it.”
“Me too,” Vex said. “No more cold and dank basements for me.”
Landon nodded, leaning down to place their lips close together for a kiss. “Never again. Never anything but warmth and happiness and comfort.”
She blinked up at him, but before she could say anything, she felt a rush of wind and smelled something like burned sugar. Cotton candy. Cold air.
They turned to see Lorien striding in, followed by his cohorts.
Vex pulled back from Landon, unsure what to say to his family. It felt oddly human to be meeting her mate’s family. But she wasn’t going to let it make her nervous. She’d earned where she belonged.
Forever and always, she’d take care of Landon. She didn’t need to prove it to anyone else.
But it seemed Lorien had other issues.
“Lor,” Landon said, walking forward to c
lap his arms around his brother in a hug.
Lorien looked slightly startled, then hugged his brother back.
“It is good to be able to see you whenever I want,” he said.
“He was worried sick about you,” Reve said.
“Still is,” Jerrek said, tossing his dark-red hair over one shoulder. “Can’t focus at all in the dream realm. Gave the throne to Aldus.”
Landon’s blue eyes widened. “What? You deferred?”
Lorien nodded. “I find I no longer fit in the dream realm. Maybe I never did.”
“What do you mean? Here, pull up a chair,” Vex said, using portals to bring half a dozen from somewhere else in the castle.
“That is highly unnerving,” Lorien said as he sat down. “No. I…” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Perhaps I haven’t always been wholly honest with you, Landon.”
Landon cocked his head as he took his own chair. “What do you mean?”
“I didn’t want you to go seek your mate in the fae realm, but it wasn’t because I disapproved. It was because I thought she wouldn’t be there.”
“Why?”
Reve looked at Jerrek on the other side of Lorien.
“Because mine wasn’t,” Lorien said. “All three of us saw faces at the mate finding ceremony, but those faces were nowhere to be found. Linked through a thread that goes nowhere.”
“That’s what we’ve also been doing while trying to find you,” Reve said. “Seeing if our mates are anywhere outside the fae dream realm.”
“More like the reason they were even willing to risk defecting in the first place,” Lorien said. “We all hoped we might find our mates. That they just hadn’t shown the first time.” He hung his head. “But I’m beginning to think it’s truly a lost cause.”
“Have you checked the human world?” Landon asked.
Lorien’s head came up. “Why would we do that?”
“There are humans with latent fae blood,” Landon says. “Beacons. Your mate could be there. I could help you get to the human dream world, or Vex could portal you there.”
Lorien stood, pacing suddenly. “I’m not sure about this. I’ll have to think.” He looked at one of the stained-glass windows. “Perhaps it would be worth it if she were there.”
