The Maestro Page 21

by Miller, C. J.

Kieran shifted and reached for my hand. “His name’s William. We share a father. He was an equal disappointment to my dad as an artist as I was as a musician. You’d think we’d bond over that, but no. We barely know each other. He lived with his mother.”

I’d been trying not to watch the road, being freaked out driving on what was the wrong side to me. I tightened my hand around his, sensing his unease. “Why do you want to see him?”

“We don’t have much family left. I’m here. Why not?”

“It’s a great idea. You never know if you’ll hit it off.”

As we pulled up to a small farmhouse, a man sitting on the front steps rose to his feet. I inhaled sharply. “He could be your twin.”

Kieran darted a glance in my direction and put the car into Park. “We look nothing alike.”

“Dark, dreamy eyes. Tall and lean. Brooding expression.”

He growled. “I’m not brooding. Don’t make comments about him. It makes me jealous.”

I pressed a kiss to his cheek. “You have nothing to worry about. You know I’m all yours.”

He set his hands on the side of my face, turned his head, and kissed me softly, letting his mouth linger on mine for a long moment.

We stepped out of the car, and I put on my brightest smile. I’d be perky and happy enough for all three of us.

The brothers greeted each other with an awkward handshake. Observing the two men at this range, I noted William’s eyes were a shade lighter with gold flecks in the brown. He wore his hair shorter and his facial hair longer, more like unshaven rather than a deliberate attempt at growing a beard.

“It’s been a long time,” Kieran said.

“Aunt Hilda emails me when you’re in the news. That’s been more often lately,” William said.

Kieran smiled. “She does the same with you.” Kieran introduced me, and I marveled at how alike they were, and somehow, despite the distance between them, they seemed at ease with each other.

“Want to come in for a drink?” William asked.

Kieran’s arm went around my shoulder. “We’d love to.”

This was what I wanted. To be brought deeper into Kieran’s life. To be his partner, his lover, his best friend. I laid my head on his shoulder to feel his strength, to know he was mine, and that whatever our next adventure, we’d do it together.
