The door was locked behind us after we entered, the sergeant nodding to four armed guards who stood by a small vault.
“What is that?” she asked, glancing from one man to the other.
“Something I protected. Vital information and documents that your father gave me two days before the cabin was burned.” Sergeant Cross moved to a desk, pulling out a handheld scanner.
“What do I have to do with this?” she asked, more sheepish this time.
He approached, showing her the device. “May I?”
“I... Okay,” she finally said.
“What you don’t know is that there are many stories and factions around the holocaust. The government at the time was divided, some fighting the war while others felt it was necessary. Those opposing were determined to allow humanity to survive. In doing so, they developed their own branch of government, one that involved your father and myself, as well as many of the men who work with me now. Everything was kept on a top secret need to know basis. For reasons you can imagine.” He gestured for her arm, giving her a warm smile.
“Okay. Go on,” she insisted.
“There was an entire government plan laid out, including successors. Yes, much like what Chancellor Harding is doing now, but it was our belief that this was necessary in case the war escalated, which we all know was much more catastrophic than anyone believed. In addition, Senator Drake Harding and others were put on a watch list. We were well aware that there would be takeover attempts. We were also made aware of the concept of diseases and worked diligently to find cures and inoculations both before and after the initial apocalypse. Dr. Canton was a part of that before his participation was found out. He was really working for the good guys. Sadly, he was caught up in Harding’s fear and greed.”
She gave me a look of reverence, at least knowing I’d told her the truth.
“We didn’t anticipate how Chancellor Harding would gain such a following. He is very manipulative.” The sergeant ran the scanner over her wrist. Immediately the device lit up.
“What is that?” she asked, jerking back.
“Women were imprinted, chips implanted for various reasons. To keep track. To ensure high birth rates. They didn’t realize we’d found out about their technique and used it against them, at least in certain cases.” The sergeant walked back to a computer system, waving his hand over the console.
“And?” she half whispered.
“Your father arranged for you to be taken that day you’d visited him, but there were people inside the facility loyal to our cause. They made certain you were implanted with our coding system and protected as much as possible. Of course we had to make your incarceration look real. I’m so sorry for what you had to go through.”
I walked closer as she seemed to falter, her body swaying.
“How can this be?” she whispered.
“We also selected Dr. Canton with the same coding system.” He walked toward me, nodding toward my arm. “Brilliant minds spent years developing and protecting as many systems already in place as possible.”
I held my arm into the light, my body rigid. He hadn’t gone over this revelation during our earlier discussion.
After he waved it over my wrist, he smiled. “Excellent.”
“What does all this mean?” I asked the question.
“It means,” he said as he moved his finger across the screen, closing his eyes until he heard a click, “that the two of you will be forever known as the saviors of the human race.”
We both watched as the vault opened and everyone in the room seemed to be holding their breath.
“We will wage a war on Washington DC, but there will be no chemical warfare, as little innocent blood spilled as possible. The horrors that the various factions have endured can be eradicated. With your help. Then, we will return as a free and democratic country.”

Two months later
Alex
“You look beautiful.”
I knew that Scorpio had spoken the words, a man forever in my presence. He’d taken his oath to protect me seriously.
“You all look very handsome,” I countered, gazing at four men in suits. They couldn’t be more uncomfortable. Even the fact they’d received haircuts, trimming their beards seemed out of place.
“Yes, but I think she needs a serious round of discipline for all the disobedience,” Rock said in a joking manner.
“Don’t you dare even try,” I countered, studying myself in the mirror. The red suit was just right for the day’s events, even though I felt like a fraud.
Montana advanced, yanking me over his arm and giving me two hard swats on my bottom. “You belong to us. How quickly she forgets.” He delivered two more until I yelped, even though desire rocketed through me.
We’d spent several twenty-four-hour days, attempting to right the wrongs, working together in order to battle the soldiers and scavengers, finally managing after two brutal battles to reclaim Washington. The people were frightened, horrified of any additional change, shell-shocked.
What had been found in the vault, including the capability of shutting down the various weaponry that had been built years before, had deescalated the chemical war. The entire government had relied on old systems, finding no need to waste time or precious money building new ones. The information I’d given my father so long ago on the chancellor had brought the angry mobs as we’d hoped, his past crimes including human trafficking and other heinous events enough to dissuade even his most loyal subjects. At least the huntsmen had secured every detail, protecting it with their lives.
May the chancellor rot in jail. At least I’d been the prosecuting attorney on his criminal case, the jury finding him guilty in a matter of hours. Justice had been served.
At least in one way.
He would eventually die from his greed, the serum ravaging his body and there was nothing that could be done to save him.
As far as Dr. Jacob Canton... His previous work hadn’t been destroyed, simply implanted in his arm as well as follow-up documentation placed in the vault. My father and his cabinet had anticipated almost everything.
Except for the level of despair.
It would take time to rebuild hope.
Scorpio’s intuition had been right about the serum. Without interference, the majority of people would have eventually died.
“Doctor, how are the experiments going?” I asked after Montana planted a kiss on my forehead. I rubbed my ass, the heady round of spanking and sex the night before replaying in my mind and my aching bottom.
He glanced around the room, almost sulking before giving me an answer. “As well as can be expected. We’re ready to release the inoculations for several diseases in the next few days. The huntsmen have all been inoculated and with a one hundred percent cure.”
“And the scavengers?” I asked, almost fearful of the answer.
Scorpio took a deep breath. “The effects in the subjects are diminished. They should make a full recovery, at least in time.”
“Excellent. Calls for a celebration!” Diesel moved toward a bottle of champagne, a true luxury.
“Not just yet,” I whispered, a lump sticking in my throat.
He eased the bottle back into the cooler, smiling as he always did. His hope had been infectious.
“Are you ready?” Scorpio asked, his eyes twinkling.
“As I can be.”
They led me out of the bedroom, military officers going in front and behind as I made my way down the stairs and toward the rotunda. “Give me a minute. There’s something I have to do.”
There were two beautiful young women standing in the hallway and I couldn’t be more proud.
“Ashley,” I whispered, throwing my arms around her. “I’m so glad you are here.”
“I wouldn’t miss this for the world. Not every day my big sister become the big cheese.”
I adored her verve, the fact she’d was thriving. Turning my head, I could tell how timid Josie conti
nued to be. Finding out that her real father was actually Christopher Pentigrass had rocked her. She’d been one of the last surrogate children born and she’d actually come to warn me, escaping the chancellor’s tyranny as everyone else had. She’d had no way of knowing she’d also had the chip implanted. The man wanted to take everything he could from my father.
“Josie.”
She grabbed me close, pressing her face into my neck. “Knock them dead, sis.”
“I’m going to try.”
For whatever reason so much trust had been placed on my shoulders, I wasn’t going to take it lightly. Today was the beginning of our future. I adjusted my suit one last time before walking outside, ready to face the people of the United States of America.
I was shocked seeing at least two thousand people waiting to hear what I had to say.
I was a nobody.
Just a girl who hadn’t lost her humanity or her fight to regain freedom.
And all because of four huntsmen who’d been willing to risk their lives for me.
I gave them all a look before heading toward the podium. I was no forum speaker, but I’d prepared what I wanted to say for some time. This was our country, those who believed in good versus evil and right versus wrong.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” I said, almost falling against the wooden stand. I waited as they cheered, still scanning the horizon, still frightened of retaliation. I felt the presence of my men behind me and had never wanted them as much as I did right then.
“Thank you all for coming. My name is Alexandra Pentigrass. I am the interim president of the United States.” The shouting and clapping were thunderous, the crowd moving closer. I had a moment of panic before standing taller, remembering so many things my father had told me, including how proud he was to be an American.
“Thank you for coming and for your support. I’m here to announce that we will be having elections this November, including for the president and vice president of our great country. We have to regain our democracy, take back what is rightfully ours.”
The audience quieted.
“We have the right to enjoy our freedom. Freedom from tyranny, from poverty, and from threats of violence. We are a nation divided, but that can be no longer. We are strong and resilient. We are intelligent and capable. We are loving and giving. We. Are. Americans. Together we will stand against all others who would fight against us. Together we will take back what belongs to us rightfully, the home of the free and the brave. And together we will stand tall, enjoying the lives of our families and friends, our children in order to provide a future without war and strife. Together, as one, we will defend what was almost taken from us and we will prosper again. Together we stand, united.”
The crowd erupted.
As a little girl, I’d believed in heroes, knights coming on white steeds, protecting all of us from the evils of this world. I’d lost that belief, falling into the same ugliness that had swept through the entire world. Today, I had hope for the future. For the men I adored.
And for the little boy or girl growing inside of me.
For today, I truly understood the meaning of the word...
Freedom.
The End

It turns out my newest patient is the stern, sexy brute who all but dragged me back to his hotel room a couple of nights ago so he could use my body as he pleased, then showed up at my house the next day, stripped me bare, and spanked me until I was begging him to take me even more roughly and shamefully.
Now, with his enemies likely to be coming after me in order to get to him, all I can do is hope he’s as good at keeping me safe as he is at keeping me blushing, sore, and thoroughly satisfied.
