  Chapter One

Corruption of the heart caused by someone you love, and trust unconditionally is the worst pain anyone could ever go through. I had learned to accept the death of my parents when they were taken from me by a car accident. But I would never accept them being murdered. Once the tears cleared, anger took over and I wanted to retaliate, but I knew I couldn’t. I have a baby growing inside of me and I must think of its wellbeing first.

I collected myself and hid the pictures and the letter that someone left me in one of the books on the shelf of the library. No one would ever find them there. I checked myself in the mirror and then made my way back to Tristan who was sitting on the stairs waiting for me.

  “Is everything ok?” he asked.

“No. Can I speak to you privately?” Daveh hurried off but I didn’t trust that we wouldn’t be heard. “Is there someplace we can go? Away from here?”

“Sure.” He headed for the front door and I followed. We got in his car and drove for twenty-minutes. When we finally stopped, we were surrounded by trees. I knew no one would hear us out here, they wouldn’t even be able to find us. He turned to me, “What’s going on Lilith?”

I began to cry, and he placed a hand on my shoulder. “How close are we? I mean friendship wise?”

“We are very close, and you are my best friend. What’s this about?”

“How close are you and Odin?”

“We used to be close but have grown apart since you came into the picture.”

“Were the two of you so close that he would tell you his deepest darkest secret?” I asked, trying to find out if he knew the truth.

“No, we were close but not that close. Him and Cal are that close though. Why do you ask? Lilith what’s going on?”

I looked at him meeting his eyes. “Odin murdered my parents.” He didn’t respond. He sat there looking down playing with the steering wheel. “Did you know?”

  “Not completely.”

“What do you mean not completely?”

“I assumed. One day Odin was sent on a mission by his father. He wasn’t allowed to take any of us with him except Cal. They were gone for a few days and when they came back, they said we were moving to Maine for our next mission. When I asked what the mission was about, I noticed Odin and Cal exchange a weird look, but all they said was that we had to go and protect you. I was okay with protecting you. We watched you for a long time in the distance. We took shifts watching your house at night after school. It was my easiest mission since you didn’t really have a life, no offense.”

“Some taken but continue,” I said.

“One day Odin decided to send Ambi over to you to see if you knew anything about your life. He wanted to know if you knew about being a vampire yet. When he learned that you didn’t know anything, he decided to go after you. He knew he had to make you fall in love with him before Parker arrived. He knew he was coming, and he needed to stop the connection you and Parker would form. Once I met you and found out that your parents were killed in a car accident, I put two and two together. I wasn’t positive, but I had a feeling Odin was the cause of their deaths. He had to get you away from them, so he would have a chance with you. He needed you vulnerable and weak.”

“Tristian, I trusted him with everything I had. I confided in him. I told him things I have never told another person. I loved him and now I have the devils baby growing inside of me. I can’t stay here. There is no way I will let Odin, or his sadistic father raise my baby.”

“Are you sure this is what you want?”

  “Yes. I’m sure.”

“Okay then I will help you.”

“You don’t have to do that. When I leave, all hell will break loose and if they know you helped me, they will kill you. I love you and I can’t let them kill you.”

“Then I will come with you. I will help you run, hide and raise this baby. I would do anything for you Lilith and I won’t let you go through this alone.”

“You would do that for me? Why?” I asked surprised at his offer.

“Because I love you,” he said meeting my eyes. “I have loved you for a long time Lilith.”

“Tristan…” I was cut off when his lips met mine. He kissed me gently with pure love. It wasn’t a passionate kiss, just simple, but I could feel it in my soul. He did love me, deeply. I pulled away from him and rested my head on his shoulder. “Thank you,” I whispered.

  “For what?”

“Helping me.” I sat back on my side of the car. “We need to come up with a plan. We won’t be able to just walk out the front door with all our stuff. If they know we are leaving they will try to stop us.”

“We can grab just the things that are most important. We can store it in my trunk and each day add something else. When we are ready, we can sneak out at night while everyone is asleep. They won’t know we are missing until morning and by then we will be long gone.”

“How will we get out of Italy?”

“I have some connections. I will check with them and see about g
etting us a private jet.”

  “I really hope this works.”

He turned to me. “Lilith you must act like everything is normal with Odin until we are able to leave. Can you do that? Can you act normal even though you want to rip his head off?”

I thought about Odin touching me and my stomach turned. I didn’t want to be near him let alone having him touch me. “I will try my best,” I said as if trying to convince myself.

“Okay and remember I am right next door if you need me for anything. No matter what time of day.” I hugged him, and he pulled me closer. I knew I could trust Tristan. He never did anything to betray my trust like Odin had.

We left the woods and headed back toward the house when I had a question, “Once a Sacrament is complete, can it be undone?”

“In the coven, no. The Sacrament is complete, and you are about to break the biggest law of the coven.”

“What will happen if they catch me once I leave?”

“If they catch you, you will be brought back to Odin and he will get to choose your fate. But you will be punished by his father and his father will want death. They don’t take too kindly to the females leaving the coven. It’s kind of like…”

“If I can’t have you no one can,” I said cutting him off.

  “Exactly.”

“What happens if I end up with someone else?”

“Then there will definitely be death for you and whoever you are with.” I let his words sink in for the rest of the ride home.

When we pulled up to the house, I noticed Odin’s car sitting in the driveway. Panic filled me, “Tristan wait. I can’t do this.”

“Yes, you can. Just do what you’re good at lately. Go tell him you don’t feel well and go take a nap,” he said with a smile.

We got out of the car and headed toward the door. Before we could reach it, Odin came running out of the house. “Where have you been? I have been so worried.”

“Tristan took me sightseeing. There was no need to worry,” I said. Odin wrapped his arms around me and it took everything I had not to pull away from him. I let him hug me, but I could only hug him back loosely. My insides turned making my stomach upset.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone where you were going?” he scolded.

“Odin I am not a child. I am free to come and go as I please,” I snapped.

I heard Tristan in my mind, “Easy Lilith. Be mad but don’t lose control.”

“I know you can do whatever you want but with Slaaneth’s army after you, you should always let someone know where you will be. We need to be able to protect you. And we can’t do that if we don’t know where you are.”

“Fine, I’ll let someone know the next time I plan on leaving.”

“Good,” he said with a smile. He pulled me in for a kiss and what I felt shocked me. There was nothing, no heat, no electricity. The butterflies I felt every time our lips met were gone as well. All my feelings of love for him were replaced with hate and rage. When he finally pulled away from me, he looked at me questioningly. I knew he felt I was different. “Daveh said some guy brought you a package today, she said the guy said it was urgent. What was it?”

Damn you Daveh, I thought. “It was just the deed to my parents’ house. Mr. Tassel had it delivered.”

Odin nodded then turned to Tristan, “I would like to have a word with you privately.” It wasn’t a question and I could hear the authority in his voice. We all walked into the house and Odin ushered me upstairs while they entered the library. When the door closed, I ran over trying to listen in. The door was too thick; I couldn’t hear a word.

I spoke to Tristan with my mind, “Tristan I want to listen in.”

  “Okay,” he said back.

I wasn’t just able to hear what was being said, I could see Odin. It was as if I were looking through Tristian’s eyes. “What were you thinking taking Lilith off these grounds?”

“She wanted to see some of Italy. You weren’t here. You are never here for her Odin.”

“And what, you thought you would step up and play hero for her again?”

“Lilith is a big girl and very capable of making her own decisions.”

“Lilith is my wife and you will learn to keep your distance. Understand?”

“Lilith and I are friends. You can’t take that away from us. Don’t be threatened by that Odin, it’s not a good look for you.”

Odin stepped closer to Tristan’s face, “Stay away from her or I’ll send you on a mission you will never return from.”

I burst through the door rage fueling my body, “I swear on everything I love Odin if you so much as try and send him away I will never forgive you. Tristan is my best friend and I will not let you hurt him.”

  “Lilith I…”

“Save it Odin. You will not threaten him again. You will not try to intervene in our friendship again. Do you understand that if you mess with him you will lose me forever?”

“I know how he feels about you Lilith. He is in love with you.”

“I know. And Tristan and I have an understanding about that. He will never try anything with me. He knows I am a married woman and he respects that.”

“I can’t trust that he won’t try to have you.”

Frustrated I turned toward Tristan, “Do you have any intentions of taking me away from Odin?” I asked. He shook his head. “Do you have any plans on trying to take me to your bed?” He shook his head again. “Do you want to interfere with my marriage?”

“I would never come between the two of you. Odin, I do love Lilith and she knows it, you know it. But I respect the bond between the two of you. I have no intentions other than being her friend,” he said.

“Fine. The two of you can continue your friendship but no more secret trips together,” Odin said.

“And you won’t send him away?” I asked.

  “No,” he said reluctantly.

“Good. Then no more secret trips,” I agreed.

I turned to leave the library, “Lilith can I talk you?” Odin asked.

“Not now. I’m still pissed. I’m going to go take a nap. Maybe when I wake up, I’ll be ready to talk.” He nodded and hung his head as I walked away. The rage inside of me made me exhausted and I needed sleep.

  Chapter Two

When I woke up Odin was sitting on the couch in the sitting area of our room. He looked stressed and unfocused. I adjusted the covers causing him to look over at me. “Hey,” he said softly.

  “Hey.”

  “Can we talk now?”

  “I guess.”

He walked over and sat next to me on the bed, “Lilith I am sorry for how I reacted earlier. I just hate seeing him get to spend so much time with you. My father has me so busy with the coven I’m never home. And I understand now that me not being here for you has pushed you into this friendship with Tristan. I was jealous. I’m sorry.”

“Odin, Tristan and I were friends before we even moved here. Why are you just now jealous?”

“Because I’m never here for you. When I’m not here who do you go to when you have nightmares?”

  “Tristan.”

“When you need something, who do you go to?”

  “Tristan.”

“And when you need comfort when I’m not around who gives you that?”

  “Tristan. But Odin…”

He cut me off, “I appreciate that he can be here for you when I can’t, but I know he is in love with you. He does these things because he is in love with you. And it kills me to know that I can’t be here for you like he can.”

“No Odin, he does them because he is my friend. My best friend.”

  “Do you love him Lilith?”

“Yes, but in the way, one would love a brother.”

“Do you have feelings for him?”

“Not in the way you think I do.”

“Can you honestly say that I have nothing to worry about between the two of you?”
<
br />   I grabbed his face between my hands and made him look me in the eye. “You have absolutely no reason to think I would ever leave you for Tristan. I am madly in love with you Odin. You are the only person I want to be with.” I thought I may just puke from my own words, but I had to make him believe me. So, I kissed him. I kissed him like I didn’t know he killed my parents. I didn’t think the kiss through because he climbed on top me and pulled my shirt off. I couldn’t turn him down; he would know something was wrong. So, I gave into him.

He ran his hand along my stomach, inching closer to my breast. I tried to feel the same way I used too but I couldn’t. I had nothing for him but hate. I pulled away from him, “Lilith what’s wrong?”

“I don’t feel well. I think I’m coming down with something.”

“You have been sick for some time now. We need to get you to the doctor.”

Panic filled me, if he took me to the doctor, they would find out I am pregnant. “No.”

“Lilith, something is wrong with you. You have been extremely exhausted since we moved here. All you do is sleep. And you are constantly sick to your stomach. Wait, you don’t think you could be pregnant, do you?”

He cannot find out I’m pregnant. “No. I actually took a test this morning because I thought that might be it but I’m not. I think the move just put a big strain on me.”

“I still think you need to see a doctor,” he pleaded.

“If I am still like this in a week, I will go see one. I promise.”

“Okay I can give you a week but if you are not better by then I am going to take you myself.” I nodded in agreement then he kissed me on the forehead. “I’m going to go see what Cinzia made for dinner. Care to join me?” he said holding out his hand. I took it and he led us to the kitchen.

When we were getting close to the kitchen my mouth started to water from the smell of the food. When we entered the room, the radio was blaring and Cinzia was dancing over the stove while stirring whatever she was cooking. “What are you cooking?” I spoke loudly so she would hear me over the radio.

“Mrs. Lilith, you about scared me to death,” She said wiping her hands on her apron.
