Fractured Page 29

by T. C. Edge

She smiles warmly, and steps over towards us, her cloak flowing behind her as she comes. I look into her eyes, a shining, almost ethereal blue, and see something familiar. Her eyes, her nose, the shape of her face. I feel like I've met her before.

"Good evening, Master Overseer," she says, her voice smooth and seductive, her manner warm and inviting. She leans in and kisses his cheeks. "It is so wonderful to have you back."

"I would say it's wonderful to be back, Minerva," the Overseer says, "but I was having such an exciting time out there. So good to see some more of the world. I...don't get out as much as you."

"That may be a good thing," Minerva returns lightly. "The world is so full of darkness."

"Ah, true. But you bring the light."

The Herald of Awakening bows, her bald head reflecting firelight. Lifting her eyes back up, she turns them right on me, her expression deeply curious as she regards me.

"So, this is the famous Brie," she says. "I heard you were pretty, but didn't expect this." She reaches over, drawing me forwards, and kisses both of my cheeks. "It is so wonderful to meet you, sister."

My heart grows to a steady throb. There's something so familiar about her. Her voice, her face, her manner. A beguiling quality that I've only ever experienced once before…

"Ah, I am in remiss," the Overseer says dramatically. "Let me perform the proper introductions." His eyes glint as he turns to me. "Brie, I would like you to meet Minerva, Herald of Awakening. She is, I'm told, the finest we have."

"Oh, stop," she says, patting the old man on the chest. "I'm far from it, Master Overseer."

“You do yourself a disservice, Minerva." He smiles and looks at me. "She is so modest. I wouldn't say it runs in the family."

Minerva chuckles. "I wish I had his confidence," she says.

"I would call it overconfidence," the Overseer corrects her. "Either way, you certainly have his power. And...more. That is most certainly something that does run in the family."

I frown, the pieces coming together, forming into a completed puzzle before my eyes. A puzzle that sets a beat of dark nostalgia to my heart.

"Ah, she's finally worked it out," the Overseer says brightly, seeing my expression. "I'm sure you two will have plenty to talk about. You can start by showing Brie to her new accommodations."

"It would be my pleasure," Minerva says.

She drapes an arm around my shoulder, guiding me away. I glance back at the Overseer, grinning hawkishly as I'm drawn from the courtyard, across the plateau.

I turn back to the darkened space ahead, the grand buildings looming at the edge of the flattened expanse. In the corner of my eye, I find Minerva looking down at me, several inches taller, slim and elegant. And those eyes, those ethereal blue eyes...I've only seen eyes like that once before.

They were the eyes of Nestor, Herald of Awakening.

Eyes, clearly, that run in the family.

Minerva, his sister, has them too...
