“That can be discussed if you decide to stay.” Wild Bill sat up in his chair.
“Gonna admit not well versed on MCs, other than what I’ve read and stuff, but I can’t imagine you sharing everything with a Prospect even if I do this,” I said and cocked my brow and waited.
“You are right to a point, but I was talking about the more part,” Wild Bill replied.
If I said I wasn’t interested, it would be a lie. I liked the guys I’d met so far from Haven.
“What would keep me from saying yes, and you tell me everything, then I walk away?” I asked and watched the smile form on Wild Bill’s face.
“Nothing. Just as it would be nothing to me if you came up missing,” Wild Bill and never lost the smile on his face when he made the statement.
I sat quietly and stared at the man. I was tired of traveling the roads alone, living out of motels while I did it. I had joined the military at eighteen because I hadn’t wanted to go to college to follow in my father’s footsteps. I joined to see the world, and what I saw was a few countries with a lot of goddamned sand. When I left after my last tour was over, I picked my bike up at my parents’ house and traveled the US for a while. Now I was ready for a place to plant myself and build a life.
“What the hell, I’m in,” I answered. Really, what did I have to lose?
Wild Bill pulled his phone out and texted, then laid it down on his desk. He stood, walked around his desk, and stuck his hand out to me. We shook hands just as there was a knock at the door, and Wild Bill yelled, “Enter.” The door opened and in walked Hawk, Keg, Crank, Tram, and Pinch. Congrats were said and hands offered in welcome. When it was done, Wild Bill took his seat as did the rest of us and he began informing me of the more that Haven was. Well, at least some of the members.
That had been over three years ago as I recalled, sitting on the cot in the cell I was placed in the night before when I was brought into the correctional center through the back entrance. Parts had been played when I was sent here two years ago, it had worked then, and it needed to continue to work. Eyes were still on us, and every part had to be played to perfection.
Grinding metal sounded, and the cell door slid open. “Ready to go, Harris.” I nodded and stepped out of the eight by ten room I had been placed in. Men who had been there a long time stood at their cell doors to watch as I passed by on my trek to out-process. Some would dream of their turn while others, their time served would only come after their death, but each lived vicariously through those who were released.
The hallway leading out seemed longer than it had been when I’d first been here. How anyone lived closed in behind the concrete walls was something I hoped never to have to experience on a permanent basis. The first time I was brought here it had been raining, this day, the sun’s heat felt good when it hit my face as we stepped out the main doors onto the sidewalk that would lead me to the last thing keeping me behind the prison walls.
About the Author
Carson Mackenzie enjoys writing romance with a real feel inside the stories. She writes with the belief not every man is a jerk and not every woman needs saving.
Carson lives in the South with her son, a Great Dane and two adopted shelter dogs that keep the household in line. Books have always been a part of her life. There is nothing better to her than curling up and relaxing with a good story and losing herself in someone else’s world for a few hours.
Writing stories and growing as an author with each book is her goal. She wants to reach the level where a reader knows when they see her name on a cover, they can trust in the fact there will be a good story as they flip through the pages.
Carson’s journey into writing has only been for a few years. As she’s finally starting to settle in, she can’t believe she waited so long to start.
