That wasn’t right. He should’ve been driving away—
My heart thudded immediately, my mouth going dry. I reached with my hand, throwing it up in the air, a scream forming at the back of my throat to warn her. Her face went from happy to confused, her smile melting away.
The man walked up behind her, his baseball cap pulled low over his face. He called her name. She turned, and I saw her knees buckle, her hand go to her side.
The blade, long, cruel, jagged, glinted in the light.
She made no noise. She crumpled and hit the ground, her hair swirling around her shoulders. I sprang forward, my legs moving too slow. The lightning was crackling through my skin, ready to burst out, to attack, to defend her, but I was so far away.
She shifted on the ground, her body twisting, the man above her dropping his knife to the ground. Her low cry pierced the air, a keening noise that froze me in my tracks, the lightning dying on my fingertips.
And then the flames came, rocketing upward, to the sky, enveloping her and everything surrounding her.

This is going to be a short note.
During the writing of this novel my father who has stage 4 prostate cancer was admitted to hospital. He was very ill and had back to back blood infections. I was advised that they were discontinuing treatment via chemo and would be moving him to hospice.
Three days before I needed to submit the final manuscript, a miracle happened.
He was told he could continue active treatment.
He was told his cancer had gone into remission.
He would be coming home to me.
Please forgive me for the shortness of this book. It was 20k shorter than I had hoped it would be. The chapters that should have appeared in it will be in the next book as Darcy’s story continues. I didn’t want to push my pre-order date back and have Amazon toss me in pre-order jail for a year, canceling all the orders for readers like you, because most of you aren’t in the Facebook group and would have no idea what happened.
This was an unfortunate turn events that were devastating to me and my family. It’s been a really rough, rough ride.
My father loves that I write, and loves my readers and all the feedback you leave.
Your words and kindness have helped me more than I can say during this time.
The next book will be out as soon as possible. I left extra time in case the worst should happen, because while my father is in remission… it’s not going to last. The final chapters of his life have already been written, and it’s just a matter of lingering over the pages now. I’m already working on book 4, Phoenixash, and I’m crossing my fingers I can stick to a book-every-4-weeks with this one, but didn’t want to risk it with Amazon.
