Rodeo scrunched his eyebrows together.

“Very well. In fact, dinner tonight, Jade. We’ll leave from here. Seren is working but he’ll meet up with us at the café,” he told her.
“I can’t stay out late, though. I have to rest for work tomorrow and Saturday night,” she replied.

“Why don’t you plan on coming over for Sunday dinner, Jade?” Meryl asked her.

“She’ll be there. We were planning on bringing her along. In fact, she’ll be there every Sunday with us for now on,” Quincy said.
Meryl’s eyes widened, and Kevin smiled. “So, you did see the sheriff.”
“Later today, sir. Jade will accept guardianship officially,” he told them, and Meryl and Kevin congratulated them and gave her a hug and welcomed
her to the family.
“What’s going on in here?” Captain asked, with Sunny and Jake following.
“Jade accepted guardianship. She’s our sons’ woman,” Meryl said, sounding so thrilled.
“Congratulations, son.”
“It’s all of us, dad. She’ accepted all of us. It’s official,” Quincy told them.
“Is anyone working and answering the phones or what?” Colby asked, coming from the back room.
“What’s going on?” Shane asked. They chuckled and then congratulated their sons and her again.
“This is fantastic news. I’m so thrilled. I had a feeling something was brewing with you and my sons,” Meryl said to her as she squeezed her hands.
“Mom, you were already planning on playing matchmaker as soon as you laid eyes on her and offered her the job,” Quincy said.
“I did not. I’ve learned enough over the years about you men and your pursuits. I don’t get involved, but I will admit I hoped. Especially when I witnessed each of your reactions toward Jade.”
“Well, she’s stunning,” Quincy said.
“She sure is. You men better keep a good watch over her. Especially working at Harper’s,” Captain said. He reminded Jade of Colby.

“Sounds like there’s more to that statement,” Sunny chimed in, his eyebrows furrowed.
“We’ll explain on Sunday. Right, Jade?” Colby said to her firmly. She nodded, but it was obvious she was uncomfortable.
“Well, let’s get back to work,” Jake told them.
Quincy gave her a kiss and a tap to her hip, then Colby, then Shane before they headed back to their work. It was just her and Meryl now by the front desk.
“Overwhelmed?” Meryl asked. She nodded. “It will be just fine. I know exactly how you feel. My men and I met under some pretty intense circumstances. I was in an abusive relationship, and my boyfriend nearly killed me.”
“Oh my God. How did you get out of it and survive?” Jade asked.
“I was twenty. I had no family, no real, honest friends. He manipulated them all. I took a chance, and after one of his drunken beatings, I grabbed what money I had and took off. “My men were nearby. Captain and Kevin saw Brady approach and strike me. It was instant. “Keep my sons close to you, Jade. If you’re in some kind of danger, make sure you fully accept their guardianship and protection,” Meryl told her.
“I do accept them. I was scared to let them in and share what happened. It isn’t an ex-boyfriend or anything like that I ran from, but rather a screwed up family, well, not a family at all, but a father who made me part of a business deal. Basically, I would belong to a man I didn’t even know but who wanted me in his bed.”
“Oh God. What in the world?” Meryl asked and reached out and caressed Jade’s arm.

“That’s what you’re running from?” Jake asked.
“Yes. After they beat me and told me what I needed to do, I grabbed the money I had and just enough things in a backpack to get by. I took off. Just ran and took bus after bus, zigzagged across the state, and well, no one would hire me because of the bruises, and I was homeless.”

“How did you survive? Where did you stay and hide out?” Meryl asked her.
“At first I got cheap motel rooms but my money was disappearing quickly. Eventually, it came down to not eating every day, rationing out the money for necessities, and then grabbing work where I could for cash. Stupid jobs, bartending in dives, waitressing in crappy places. I wound up in Dallas on a bus where I met Shawna.” Jade smiled. “She was so friendly, and it was like we hit it off, you know? Started talking. I told her I needed a job a safe place to stay because there were nothing but creeps around, and she told me about Cherry Hill.”
“Shawna is a sweetheart. She’s had her share of bad luck over the years. She worked hard, hustled to pay for beauticians’ school, and is now one of the most requested beauticians in the hair salon,” Meryl told her.
“Well, I owe her so much and think of her as a best friend.”
“Now you have a family, too. Our sons and all of us will watch over you and protect you,” Jake said.
“I want more information on these men and that situation you were involved in. I think Seren and the sheriff need to know, too.” Captain told her.
“I don’t want to alert my father or those men to where I am. Protection or not, I don’t want trouble coming this way, to this town, to your sons.”
“That isn’t really up to you, Jade. You’ve accepted their guardianship and it’s their job to protect you. Our sons can’t do that if you don’t tell them these men’s names so they can prepare and plan. They’re soldiers. They think strategically, and having all the information they need to protect you is the best way to keep you safe and secure here in Cherry Hill.”
“Okay, sir. I’ll discuss it with them,” she said, feeling completely intimidated by Jake and Captain. Now she knew where her men got their personalities.
“Back to work,” Meryl said as the door chimed and some customers came in. Everyone greeted them, and Meryl gave Jade’s arm a squeeze before they went on with their workday.
“I want to ramp up security, especially at night,” Kevin said to Colby and Quincy.
“Dad, we’re in a very busy location. The bar is a few storefronts away and opened until four in the morning. There are always people walking around, and the police, too. Our shop and showroom wouldn’t be a good location to rob. Plus, by the time they set off all the alarms we have set up around the perimeter of the store, plus the silent alarms Colby put in, the police would be here before anyone started up the first bike or tried rolling it out of the showroom,” Quincy said to him.
