“Hey, you’re not funny,” Sarah said into the phone, her thighs shaking, her fingers twitching—Nina just had to give the order and she’d touch herself, she’d come for Nina, she’d do anything for Nina… “You’re a witch.”
“I know, dear.”
Sarah heard the front door close. Please let that be the wind, please, please… Wait…
“Nina?” Sarah called. “Is that you?”
Footsteps clicked through her game room. High heels on hardwood. She looked at her phone. The call had ended. Whoever was in the apartment with her had stopped just before the bedroom door, not yet coming into sight.
“Are you going to take those panties off?” Nina asked her. “Or am I going to have to do it for you?”
Sarah flopped back on the bed in relief. “What are you doing here?”
“Painting very badly,” Nina answered, coming over to the bed to rip away the pillow. “Which I’m sure I can do here as well as anywhere else. Also making sure you eat more than ramen for the next few years.”
“But I thought you couldn’t leave.”
Nina laughed. “Leave? I’m not a ghost, Sarah. The house is just a very large part of my holdings, and it’s very hard to sell. You know someone was murdered in it once?” She shook her head. “But I fully intend to return to it, hopefully dragging a cute graduate behind me. And I believe I told you to take your panties off.” She hefted the pillow threateningly. “Don’t disobey me, girl.”
Sarah skimmed the panties down her legs, then fixedly crossed them just to pay Nina back for giving her a minor heart condition. “What happened to being a hermit?”
“I figure anyone can be a hermit when they’re alone. Being a hermit in an apartment building, that takes skill. Besides, your complex allows pets.”
Sarah closed her eyes. “Do not tell me—”
“He’s waiting in the car,” Nina said. “And I’ve left him alone long enough. Hold that pose. I will be right back.”
She left the front door open.

Cassie Taylor is a brash, no-nonsense army surgeon, fresh from the front lines, and trying to find her way in civilian life. She’s all action and sharp edges, not too interested in rules. She’s even less interested in bureaucracy, or playing nice with her uptight, paper-pushing colleague, Veronica.
