“We got trouble. Serious, Voldemort trouble.”
My chest tightened and my cashmere sweater pressed against my body until I wanted to rip it right off. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“Okay, you know those shadowers that have been creeping around the last little while?”
“…Uh-huh.”
“Well, there might be a tiny little thing I maybe, sort of forgot to mention.”
“Peyton,” I hissed. “Spill it.”
My friend crouched so we could be eye level and put her hand on my shoulder while I fought the urge to back away. It was still difficult to let her touch me without thinking she could kill me where I stood in a heartbeat. But she wouldn’t—she was my best friend.
“So long story short, there’s like this big shadower resistance against the High Coven and one of the bigger factions is right here in Shadowhurst. I wanted nothing to do with it so I told them to screw off but they’ve been insistent on having me join cause it turns out they don’t have that many soul suckers in the ranks and whatever. Anyway, that’s what they were doing in my house that time when you showed up. Trying to recruit me.”
“Dude, that’s dark,” River breathed out.
“Yep,” Peyton agreed. “To get to the point, I met with two of their leads this morning.”
“You did WHAT?!?” I shouted.
“Calm your tits, girl. I went there to get some information so we know what we’re up against.”
River cocked an eyebrow. “And did you?”
“Hell, yes. But you won’t like it.” She gulped and locked her eyes on mine. “They’ve been trying to get you to leave since they knew you were a witch and didn’t want you in town. But since the whole thing with Evanora, sorry River, they’re dead set on moving forward with their plans against the High Coven.”
“Which are what exactly?”
“They want them all dead. Starting with you.”
Behind me, River ran his fingers through his hair and groaned. “Well, shit.”
Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse I had somehow found myself in the middle of some damn shadower rebellion that was gunning for me. Shadowhurst just couldn’t give me a break. My eyes peeled away from Peyton’s panicked face and I turned to look at River, bile coating my mouth as I thought about what the future might hold.
There was no other way to look at this situation and River nailed it straight on the head. ‘Well, shit’ indeed.

Here we go again...
Just when I thought I got what I wanted, life interferes and my friends and I are back to square one. You'd think getting the witch that terrorized Shadowhurst locked up would have me doing cartwheels, but when my best friend showed up to tell me that a secret shadower resistance wanted me dead, I swear I saw red.
Things couldn't stay nice and toasty in this morbid town, and somehow, I was smack dab in the middle of it all. Again. Sounds fun, right?
Oh, did I forget to mention that my boyfriend is part shapeshifter and we're basically counting down the days until his animal side triggers and I don't know, possibly kills us all?
So there you have it; my sad life in a nutshell. Looks like sticking around will not be anything close to the normal teenage life I wanted, but who needs normal when you're the only witch in a town set on destroying you? Everywhere I turn, danger looms in the shadows and my own dark magic can't stay still long enough for me to catch a break.
