The school bell rings, starting the day at St. Benedict’s Ukrainian Catholic High School. “Lettuce?” Robby asks, dialing his father’s Subway Sandwich shop on his cellphone.

He and Stefani have finished making out for the morning. Stefani smokes a cigarette. “No lettuce,” she tells him. “Salami, ham, and American cheese. Extra salami. And make it a twelve-inch. With mayo, but not too much. And onions. And they got chips, right? Tell them to send some chips. And tell them to make the sandwich with that good bread, not that spongy white stuff.”

Robby places the order. It’s to be delivered to the school in time for their lunch. “You want a Coke to drink?” he asks her, the phone to his ear.

“Yeah, a Coke,” she says. She tosses her cigarette, flips her hair. “No, make it a Diet Coke.” She pinches her soft belly. “I want to look good for prom. I want to look good for you.” she tells him, and give him a kiss, tongue included.
