What would the harm be in just one simple kiss?
She could be practical tomorrow, and in time, she’d marry someone suitable—a sensible man. Then she’d go on to have a sensible family with many sensible children. Or not ... Maybe she'd be like Aunt Dagmar, running the orchard as an unmarried businesswoman.
This kiss would be her one indulgence—something that would be hers and hers alone to remember when times got tough. She could close her eyes and remember her first kiss with the man her heart wanted.
If and only if, he wanted to kiss her again.
“I was just thinking.” She held out her hands, and just as she knew he would, he stood and as he did he pulled her to her feet with him. Once they faced one another, they stared into each other’s eyes.
Because she’d twice rejected him, she knew she had to make the first move.
She took a step to him and turned her face upward. He wasted no time in lowering his head until their lips met. The warm, gentle and love-filled kiss was everything she’d hoped it would be.
His lips were soft and loving—his arms, strong, manly, and reassuring.
In that moment, she felt loved like she’d never felt before.
“Oh, Florence.” He hugged her to himself. “There are so many things you don’t know about me.”
It was dangerous to get too close and she hoped with that kiss that he hadn’t taken it as something more than it was.
Summoning all her strength, she said, “I have to go.”
“Don’t!” He leaned down and kissed her forehead.
“There’s always tomorrow.”
“I’ll be waiting. Just like I’ve waited for the last few months.”
Her mouth dropped open in shock and then she had to know more. “Who’s that woman I saw at your house that time?” It was twice, but she didn’t want him to know she’d been counting.
“She’s someone involved with my work. You don’t need to worry about her, or anyone else. I’m a one-woman man.” He shook his head. “You’ll never need to be concerned about that.”
A giggle tumbled from her lips. Any other time, she would’ve probed more about his work. She had so many questions to ask, but it scared her that he was talking like they were on the border of starting some kind of relationship.
It was nice to be wanted.
“Would you ever consider joining the community?”
At that point, she was certain he’d run away. Instead, he said, “My life’s motto is, never say never.”
Was there a spark of a chance for them?
This was something she’d never seriously considered. All she could do was stare at him.
“Would you ever leave?” he asked.
“Never,” she answered without hesitation.
He chuckled. “Tomorrow then?” he asked.
Happiness bubbled within her to overflowing. “Yes, tomorrow.” And the day after, and the day after that, she wanted to say, because that’s what her heart wanted.
They stood there smiling at one another until she turned and walked away feeling as though she was gliding, flying.
Deep in her heart, she knew she was dancing with danger.
Yet, she’d never felt so alive.
