way rather than letting you drive. Stubborn.
Adrian was about not to go to the party. He felt that Sophia had cruelly destroyed his already battered heart. The mere idea of going to see how well she spent with Kyle repudiated him. Not for a second did it occur to him that, perhaps, that had been what she had felt so many times seeing him with Lisa. The point was that they were leaving many people injured along the way.
If he finally changed his mind, it was because Bob, a workmate whom he got along with very well and was rather shy, convinced him to go with him, since he was terribly embarrassed to go alone.
When they arrived at the party, he looked around among the attendants, searching Sophia, but there was no sign of her. He decided that the only way to quell his pain was by drinking a few drinks. All in all, he had nothing left to lose there.
He tried to have fun with Bob and some more colleagues. He tried, drink after drink, to drive away the ghosts that lurked inside him and accused him of having used Lisa to his whim again and again, especially when a girl approached him and began to flirt with him. And it was just in one of those moments when Sophia came in and saw him, so she went straight to him.
- I think you should remember that you have a girlfriend, instead of trying to flirt with all the girls at the party. You're too old for this nonsense, don’t you think?
- What do you care what I do?
- Are you drunk?
- Maybe. In any case, that is not your problem.
- Better every time, Adrian.
- It’s your opinion. I do what I want with my life. I don’t have to give you any explanation.
- No, not me, but your girlfriend. I don’t think it's funny to her.
- My girlfriend? What do you care about her? How long have you been without talking to Lisa?
- I'm leaving. I don’t have to put up with this.
- No, you don’t go anywhere - he said, grabbing her arm. - It’s time for us to speak sincerely.
And taking her by her arm, they left the room in search of a quiet place where they could talk. Because they did not find anywhere that was intimate enough for the conversation they were about to have, they finally went out into the street, even though the temperature did not invite them to be out there.
- I have nothing to talk to you about. Besides, Kyle will be looking for me.
- I don’t care. I won’t leave, keeping everything I feel inside.
- What you feel. Don’t make me laugh. Tell me the truth, why did you have to come here?
- What do you mean, why?
- I need you to explain to me why among the thousands of universities in the world, many of which I'm sure they would die for you, you had to come precisely to this one - Sophia asked, trying to control her tears.
- What don’t you still know? It is quite obvious. I came here for you.
- For me? Again, don’t make me laugh. Did you think that we were still two children and that everything would be the same as always? No, nothing is the same. It was a terrible mistake.
- Yes, it probably was. But I had trouble for seeing that it was so.
- Of course you had trouble for seeing it, because you are a selfish one who thinks only of himself.
- How can you say that?
- That's what I think, now that I know you better.
- No, the real thing is that you don’t know me because you barely let me get close to you.
- Fortunately, I didn’t. It was the best thing I could do. I wish I had not had the bad luck to see you that day at CERN. Everything has been spoiled since then. Goodbye to my beautiful memories of childhood. I don’t want to see you again, Adrian.
- What don’t you want to see me again? What has all gone wrong? But how can you to tell me that? What a cheek you’ve got! Does it seem normal to you that I cross half the world to be with you and you throw me into the arms of another to the first exchange?
- What are you saying?
- I say I don’t know who you've become. You are an uncaring, cynical and soulless woman. You haven’t cared to hurt me, you haven’t given me a single sign of affection since I arrived several months ago. Instead, you're determined to keep me as far away from you as possible. Do you know how hurts that? Sophia, I love you since I have use of reason. You've always been the love of my life, and you've never cared for me.
- So did I never care of you? You were always talking about the girls you liked.
- Goodness sake, Sophia! Do not you hear anything? I reminded you smarter.
- Thank you.
- Please, don’t be offended now. What I mean is that I was a short, thin kid with glasses and you were the perfect girl, with her beautiful face and her beautiful blond hair. What possibilities did I have with you? All the kids were crazy about you. All I could do was try to make you jealous to get your attention. But when I saw you at CERN, nothing was the same. I finally feel safe being the man I am, Sofia. I've never been intimidated to get a girl in a bar because, after all, successes or failures with women apart, I've never felt that I had anything to lose. But with you, I've never been able to be like this, even now. There was too much to lose and the worst possible scenario is the one that has come true. Since I saw you in Geneva, I knew that I could not continue with the relationship I had. I could not get you out of my head. Nothing was the same anymore. And when you contacted me on Facebook, I became the insecure boy back then who tried to make you jealous and, in the process, to find out if you felt something towards me. Once again, you bid me farewell without the slightest sign of affection. And that shattered me. So I lengthened the agony and continued with her convincing me that you were out of my reach. Explain to me, what did they do to make you so cruel?
- I'm not cruel, don’t say that - Sophia said through tears.
- You are not? You treated me like I was trash. I've been an idiot. As soon as the opportunity came, I did not think twice. Do you know all that I've lost? You don’t even imagine it. And all for nothing.
And almost like an omen, or like a reflection of that pair of soul mates, the sky suddenly broke and began to pour a rain that seemed to have been contained for a long time. No more words were needed, not just one more. At last, their logical and rational minds, yielded the command to the heart and melted in an endless kiss that had been reserving since they were only two children.
CAPÍTULO 15: DO NOT QUESTION FATE’S DECISIONS
From that moment, everything seemed to take its place. It was as if the cosmos had reorganized itself to finally achieve a sustainable order. It could have been much simpler but, it doesn’t matter now, in the end we succeeded. That's what's important.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Sometimes, no matter how much I put on my part, the result is not as good as the story of Sophia and Adrian and the damage is irreparable. But they are two good people who loved each other too much, more than they would ever dare to confess, and who were designed to stand side by side, even though they had to spend some time apart before fully understanding how much they missed
That night, the two of them cried a million tears and confessed how much they had each suffered for their part. They realized that they had been a pair of stupid proud people who were unable to speak clearly and express what they felt. They both felt exactly the same from the first moment their eyes met in Geneva. They both had been prepared earlier that day for their reunion through their dreams and memories of shared childhood. But they preferred to play hide-and-seek. Their determination to protect themselves from affliction had done just the opposite. Once again, fear and insecurity almost win the battle.
Adrian moved to Pasadena. The University was delighted with his presence there, since he increased its already high prestige. Their careers followed their blazing wake, even more than they had previously, since for the first time they both experienced a delightful balance between their professional and personal lives.
Meanwhile, the relationship with Lisa never recovered. She was the great loser of all this. In fac
t, it was possibly the one who suffered the most of everyone, because she had lost the man she loved and who had been her best friend in one fell swoop. It took to her a lot of effort to recover from this and she eventually moved to San Francisco. It did not matter how guilty they both felt and if they tried their best to repair the harm they had inflicted on her. She could not continue as if nothing had happened
And so, despite having endeavored to contradict my designs over and over again due to that ungrateful human stubbornness, they finally understood that against fate one can not fight, because when destiny is determined to make something happen, it doesn’t matter the obstacles you put or if you try to cramp me, in the end I get away with it. They, who thought that by their extraordinary intelligence they knew everything, had set out to travel half a world to find something that had always been just around the corner.
