If you enjoyed Joker in the Pack, please consider leaving a review.

For an author, every review is incredibly important. Not only do they make us feel warm and fuzzy inside, readers consider them when making their decision whether or not to buy a book. Even a line saying you enjoyed the book or what your favourite part was helps a lot.

  END OF BOOK STUFF

What do you get when you cross an old Beatles song, a few glasses of wine, and a strong desire to avoid work for a day?

For any normal person, a few laughs and a hangover. But I’ve never pretended to be normal.

Joker started one sunny day at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, not too far from Olivia’s imaginary home. The High Sheriff of Oxfordshire (yes, that really is a thing—he was a nice old dude in a frilly outfit) decided to run a series of charity fundraisers, and the company I work for was looking for volunteers to embarrass themselves. I’d already run, swum, and died of exhaustion at a sports day a few weeks previously, so I figured I might as well sign up for the singing and die of mortification too. Hey, it was another day off work and a free dinner.

Anyhow, we all turned up at the palace where our pianist was the amazing Derek Paravicini—you can’t say his name without using a superlative first because he’s a freaking genius. Blind from birth and autistic too, he can play any song in any key in any style after hearing it only once. Such an awesome guy.

One of the songs chosen for our wonky rendition was Eleanor Rigby by the The Beatles. Somehow, I’d never heard it before, but I loved it from the first run-through. And as I sang, I wondered what would happen if there really was an old woman who nobody knew. Would she be sweet and kind, just a bit lonely? Or would she be a bitch who kept to herself by choice because she preferred her own company to anyone else’s? Well, guess which one was more fun to write about?

I slung the first version of Joker (or House of Cards as it was then called) up on Wattpad, and ended up gobsmacked a few months later when it won a Watty Award. That old book makes me cringe a bit now, but it’s good to see how much my writing’s changed over the past few years. Joker 2.0 got completely rewritten with extra chapters, new characters, and a different ending.

And Nye has friends now. Hot friends, snarky friends, sometimes grumpy friends. You’ll be able to meet them soon, starting with Lachlan in Cherry on Top. The Blackwood Brits are ready to give the Yanks a run for their money :)

I hope you enjoyed Joker, and if you’re reading this in release month, there’s a giveaway on my website to win a signed copy. If you’re not and you want to hear about my new books so you can get in on the free stuff, the links to stalk me are in the previous chapter.

Right, I’m heading back to the writing cave. I’ve got a little secret project with the first three Blackwood books going on, plus Tia and Dan’s books to edit. Oh, and a whole new series to write…

  Laters,

  Elise
